Unseen Passage (Gadyansh Apathit) for IBPS RRB Office Assistant Hindi Section

intermediate 18 min read

Concept

अपठित गद्यांश — unseen prose passage — is exactly what it sounds like: a paragraph you have never seen before, followed by questions that test whether you understood what it actually says, not what you already know about the topic.

Here is the key distinction that most aspirants miss. This section does not test your general knowledge about forest conservation, water crisis, or the Indian Constitution. It tests whether you can locate specific information inside a specific paragraph, under time pressure, in a language you may not have formally studied since school. The answer is always in the passage. Always.

Think of it like this: the अपठित गद्यांश is a closed-room test. All the evidence you need is inside that room. You are not allowed to bring in outside knowledge — and more importantly, the examiner has deliberately written the options to trap people who rely on outside knowledge instead of reading carefully.

The analogy that helps most students: imagine you are a bank officer verifying a loan document. You do not approve the loan based on your general impression of the applicant — you go line by line through the document. That is exactly the mindset for गद्यांश questions.

Why does this matter for IBPS RRB specifically? Because the Hindi section tests you on standard written Hindi (मानक हिंदी), and the passages are typically 100-150 words long, drawn from themes relevant to contemporary India — environment, technology, society, governance, and rural development. You will see themes like जल संरक्षण, महिला सशक्तिकरण, स्वच्छ भारत, and digital India appear repeatedly. The vocabulary is formal but not archaic. If you have read a Hindi newspaper occasionally, nothing in the passage will be unfamiliar.

The challenge is not comprehension — it is speed and precision. You need to read the passage once, process the questions quickly, and match answers to the text without second-guessing yourself. Students who read the passage two or three times, or who spend time deliberating between options, consistently lose points here not because they lack knowledge but because their approach is inefficient.

Deep Dive

The Anatomy of an Apathit Gadyansh Question

Every question in this section belongs to one of three types. Once you classify the question, your strategy changes completely.

Type 1: Direct Retrieval (प्रत्यक्ष जानकारी)

The question asks for something explicitly stated in the passage. Example: "गद्यांश के अनुसार वन संरक्षण के लिए कौन से प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं?" The answer is a list that appears word-for-word or near-word-for-word in the passage.

Strategy: Scan the passage for the key noun from the question. Find the sentence. Match it to the option that most closely paraphrases or quotes that sentence. Do not overthink.

Type 2: Main Idea / Central Theme (केंद्रीय भाव)

The question asks what the passage is mainly about, or what the author's purpose is. Example: "इस गद्यांश का मुख्य विषय क्या है?"

Strategy: The main idea is usually stated in the first sentence or the last sentence of the passage — Hindi prose follows the same paragraph convention as English. If neither is obvious, pick the option that encompasses the entire passage without being too narrow (mentioning only one detail) or too broad (going beyond what the passage covers).

Type 3: Inference / Author's Opinion (निष्कर्ष / लेखक का मत)

The question asks what the author implies, suggests, or argues should happen. Example: "गद्यांश के अनुसार स्वच्छ भारत अभियान क्या बनना चाहिए?" This is slightly harder because the answer requires you to understand the author's stance, not just locate a fact.

Strategy: Look for opinion-marker words in the passage — चाहिए, होना चाहिए, आवश्यक है, ज़रूरी है, महत्वपूर्ण है. The sentence containing these words is almost always the answer to an inference question.

How to Read the Passage

Most aspirants read the passage first, then read the questions. Look — this is the slow approach. Here is what works faster:

Step 1 — Skim the questions first (15-20 seconds). Do not read the options yet. Just read the question stems. Identify the 2-3 key nouns or phrases each question is hunting for. In your mind, flag: "I am looking for: (a) causes of water crisis, (b) what Satyagraha contained, (c) solution to the problem."

Step 2 — Read the passage once, actively. Now as you read, your brain is primed. When you hit a sentence about causes of water crisis, you register it immediately. You are not passively absorbing — you are scanning for flagged items.

Step 3 — Answer in order of confidence. Do Type 1 (direct retrieval) questions first — they take 10-15 seconds each. Come back to Type 3 (inference) questions if any remain.

The "Only / केवल" Trap

Look at this pattern across nearly every IBPS RRB अपठित question:

The correct answer is almost always Option B — the one that mentions all items listed in the passage. The trap is Option A or C, which mention only one of the items and feel correct if you read the passage too quickly and caught only the first example.

Train yourself: whenever you see a question asking "कौन से / कौन से कारण / किन क्षेत्रों में", expect the answer to be a complete list. If one option says "केवल" anything, be suspicious.

Vocabulary Checkpoints

IBPS RRB passages use a standard vocabulary set. These words appear across most passages:

If you encounter an unfamiliar word, do not panic. Read the sentence before and after it — context almost always gives you the meaning, and for MCQ purposes, you do not need a dictionary definition, just enough to confirm which option matches.

Memory Tricks & Shortcuts

patternQuestion-First Scanning (QFS Method)

Before reading the passage, skim only the question stems (not options) in 15 seconds. Mentally note 2-3 keyword targets. Then read the passage once. Your brain will flag relevant sentences automatically, saving one full re-read. Standard approach (read passage → read questions → re-read passage for each answer): ~4 minutes for 5 questions. QFS approach (skim questions → read passage once → answer): ~2.5 minutes for 5 questions. That is 6 extra seconds per question redirected elsewhere.

eliminationThe केवल Elimination Rule

In IBPS RRB गद्यांश questions, any option containing "केवल" (only) followed by a single item is almost never correct when the passage lists 3+ items. Eliminate it immediately. This reduces a 4-option question to a 2-option question in 3 seconds without reading a single word of the passage. Works on roughly 70% of direct-retrieval questions. Standard elimination (read all options carefully): 30 seconds. केवल rule applied: 5 seconds to eliminate 1-2 options, then 15 seconds to confirm from passage.

patternOpinion Marker Hunting

For "what should happen" or "what does the author argue" questions, search the passage for these exact words: चाहिए / होना चाहिए / आवश्यक / ज़रूरी / महत्वपूर्ण चुनौती. The sentence containing these markers is the answer 9 times out of 10. Instead of re-reading the full passage for inference questions (45 seconds), you scan for these 5 trigger words (10 seconds). Step count: 8 steps → 3 steps.

patternFirst-and-Last Sentence Rule for Main Idea

Hindi formal prose (the kind used in IBPS passages) places the topic sentence either first or last. For "मुख्य विषय" or "गद्यांश का उद्देश्य" questions, read only the first and last sentences of the passage. One of them contains the answer. Skip the middle entirely for this question type. Standard approach: re-read full passage (60 seconds). First-and-Last rule: read 2 sentences (10 seconds). Speed gain: 50 seconds on a single question.

substitutionPassage-Mirroring for Vocabulary Questions

If a question asks for the meaning of a word from the passage (शब्द-अर्थ type), do not try to recall the dictionary meaning. Instead, re-read the sentence containing that word and substitute each option into the sentence. The option that makes the sentence grammatically and logically coherent is correct. This works even when you do not know the word at all. Standard approach: recall word meaning (unreliable, 20 seconds). Substitution approach: test each option in context (15 seconds, much more reliable).

Fast-Solving Framework

Walk into a गद्यांश set with this decision sequence:

Step 1 — Count the questions. Typically 5 questions per passage. Budget accordingly.

Step 2 — QFS: Skim question stems only (not options). Flag 2-3 keyword targets per question. Time: 15-20 seconds total.

Step 3 — Single read-through of passage. Mark (mentally or with a pencil) sentences that contain your flagged keywords. Time: 45-60 seconds.

Step 4 — Classify each question. Type 1 (direct fact) → go immediately to the relevant sentence, match option. Type 3 (inference/opinion) → hunt for चाहिए / आवश्यक in the passage.

Step 5 — Apply the केवल elimination rule before reading all options. Eliminate incomplete-list options immediately.

Step 6 — Answer Type 1 questions first, then Type 2, then Type 3. If any question genuinely requires a second read, do it — but only for that sentence, not the full passage.

Red flag: If you are reading the full passage a third time, your time management has broken down. Move on, mark your best guess, return if time permits.

Solved PYQs

Why this question — The Van conservation passage tests the most common question pattern: a 3-item list where wrong options omit one or two items. Classic "केवल trap."

Solving path — QFS: flag "वन संरक्षण के प्रयास." In the passage: "वन महोत्सव, वृक्षारोपण अभियान और सामुदायिक वानिकी." Options A, C, D all say "केवल" one item. Option B lists all three. केवल elimination rule applied — done in 12 seconds.

Why this question — The technology passage tests the inference / opinion question type. The question asks for "सबसे बड़ी चुनौती" — this is not a list, it is the author's stated argument.

Solving path — Hunt for opinion marker: "सबसे महत्वपूर्ण चुनौती है कि कैसे हम अपनी मानवीयता को बनाए रखें और तकनीक का सदुपयोग करें." The word "महत्वपूर्ण चुनौती" triggers the opinion marker rule. Option C mirrors this sentence directly. Options A and D describe facts mentioned in the passage but are not presented as the main challenge.

Why this question — The water crisis passage tests cause-identification. The trap: students who know about water scarcity may pick "वर्षा की कमी" (Option A) from general knowledge, even though the passage does not say that.

Solving path — The passage explicitly states "बढ़ती जनसंख्या और औद्योगीकरण के कारण." Option A introduces "वर्षा की कमी" — a plausible real-world cause but absent from the passage. This is the outside-knowledge trap. The closed-room rule: if it is not in the passage, it is not the answer. Option B is the direct retrieval match.

Why this question — The Satyagraha passage tests whether you distinguish between what something is used for (राजनीतिक हथियार) and what principles it contains (अहिंसा, सत्य, न्याय). A careless reader picks Option C (केवल राजनीतिक विचार) because the word "राजनीतिक" appears in the passage. But the passage says it was not merely a political weapon — it contained three principles.

Solving path — The passage: "इसमें अहिंसा, सत्य और न्याय के सिद्धांत निहित थे." Option B is the exact match. Option C contradicts the passage's own statement that it was more than a political tool. Options A and D introduce elements not mentioned.
