संधि (Sandhi) and समास (Samas) are two different ways Hindi borrows words from Sanskrit and builds new compound expressions. They look similar on the surface — both join two words into one — but the mechanism is completely different, and SSC GD exploits that confusion heavily.
Here is the core distinction before anything else:
संधि is about sound. Two adjacent sounds merge according to phonetic rules. When you split a sandhi word, you recover individual phonemes that changed. Example: राजेश = राजा + ईश, where आ + ई fused into ए.
समास is about meaning and grammar. Two words join by dropping the connecting case marker (विभक्ति or कारक). When you expand a samas word, you put that case marker back. Example: राजपुत्र = राजा का पुत्र — the का was hidden inside the compound.
Think of it this way: Sandhi is a chemistry reaction between sounds, Samas is a zip-file compression of a phrase.
Why does this matter for SSC GD? Because the exam will hand you a word like यथाशक्ति and ask you to identify the samasa, or hand you उच्चारण and ask for the sandhi vicchheda (split). Getting these wrong is not a knowledge gap — it is a classification gap. Once you know which type of sandhi or samas is at play, the answer becomes mechanical.
A classroom analogy: think of संधि like stitching two pieces of cloth where the edges overlap and blend. Think of समास like packing multiple items into one bag — the items stay distinct, you just removed the label separating them.
When two vowels meet, they merge. There are five sub-types:
दीर्घ संधि: Same vowel meets same vowel — result is the long form.
अ/आ + अ/आ = आ — राम + अवतार = रामावतारइ/ई + इ/ई = ई — गुरु + उपदेश = गुरूपदेश (wait — that is उ + उ = ऊ)उ/ऊ + उ/ऊ = ऊ — गुरु + उपदेश = गुरूपदेशगुण संधि: अ/आ meets इ/ई → ए; meets उ/ऊ → ओ; meets ऋ → अर्
राजा + ईश = राजेश (आ + ई = ए)सप्त + ऋषि = सप्तर्षि (अ + ऋ = अर्)वृद्धि संधि: अ/आ meets ए/ऐ → ऐ; meets ओ/औ → औ
एक + एक = एकैक (अ + ए = ऐ)यण संधि: इ/ई → य्; उ/ऊ → व्; ऋ → र् before a different vowel
यदि + अपि = यद्यपि (इ + अ = य्)अयादि संधि: ए/ऐ/ओ/औ before any vowel break down
ने + अन = नयन (ए → अय्)When a consonant meets a vowel or another consonant, changes occur. The most tested rule:
त् / द् before च/छ → becomes च्; before ज/झ → becomes ज्; before ट/ठ → becomes ट्; before ल → becomes ल्त् + च = च्च — that is why उत् + चारण = उच्चारणVisarg (ः) reacts with the following sound:
निः + क/ख/ट/ठ/प/फ → ष् appears: निः + कपट = निष्कपटनिः + च/छ/ट → श् appearsनिः + त/थ → स् appearsर् or dropThe pattern to remember: visarg before hard unvoiced consonants (क, ख, प, फ) → ष्.
This is where SSC GD loves to set traps. Learn the एक-line identity test for each type.
| समास | Identity Test | Example | Vigraah |
|------|--------------|---------|---------|
| अव्ययीभाव | First word is अव्यय (indeclinable); whole compound acts as अव्यय | यथाशक्ति | शक्ति के अनुसार |
| तत्पुरुष | Second word (उत्तरपद) is main; case marker hidden between words | राजपुत्र | राजा का पुत्र |
| कर्मधारय | Both words describe the same entity (विशेषण-विशेष्य or उपमा) | नीलकमल | नीला है जो कमल |
| द्विगु | First word is a numeral; describes a collection | त्रिभुवन | तीन भुवनों का समूह |
| द्वंद्व | Both words are equally important; और/या implied between them | राम-श्याम | राम और श्याम |
| बहुव्रीहि | Neither word is main; the compound describes a third entity | पीतांबर | पीला है अंबर जिसका (= विष्णु) |
The कर्मधारय vs बहुव्रीहि trap — this is the most common SSC confusion point.
पीतांबर: Is it कर्मधारय (पीला अंबर = yellow cloth) or बहुव्रीहि (one whose cloth is yellow = Vishnu)? Look at whether the compound refers to the words themselves or points to an outside entity. In exam context, पीतांबर almost always = बहुव्रीहि because it refers to Vishnu, not to a yellow cloth.
अव्ययीभाव quick list — words starting with यथा, प्रति, आ, अनु, भर, हर almost always form अव्ययीभाव समास: यथासमय, प्रतिदिन, आजन्म, अनुकूल, भरपेट, हरसाल.
When you see a word with ष्क, ष्ट, ष्प inside it, immediately look for a निः or दुः prefix hiding as the first part of the sandhi. निः + कपट = निष्कपट, दुः + कर = दुष्कर. Standard method: read all four options and guess — 60 seconds. This pattern: spot ष् inside the compound → write निः/दुः + consonant → done in 8 seconds.
Memorize six trigger prefixes: यथा, प्रति, आ, अनु, भर, हर. If the first word of the compound is any of these, mark अव्ययीभाव without reading further. In a 4-option question this eliminates 3 options in under 5 seconds versus 30 seconds of vigraah analysis. Works for: यथाशक्ति, प्रतिदिन, आजीवन, अनुरूप, भरसक, हरदम.
Ask yourself: "Does this compound name a third thing not mentioned in the words?" If yes → बहुव्रीहि. पीतांबर → points to Vishnu (not in the words). चतुर्भुज → points to Vishnu again. लंबोदर → points to Ganesh. If the compound just describes itself → कर्मधारय or द्विगु. This single question eliminates the most common wrong answer in 10 seconds versus re-doing vigraah for 40 seconds.
The formula आ + इ/ई = ए covers a huge proportion of गुण संधि questions. Whenever you see ए in a compound and the first part ends in आ, split at that ए and restore आ + ई. राजेश = राजा + ईश, महेश = महा + ईश, गणेश = गण + ईश. Identifying the sandhi type from the merged vowel: standard approach takes 4 option-comparisons (30s); this formula takes one pattern check (8s).
Same short vowel + same short (or long) vowel → long vowel. उ + उ = ऊ is the dīrgha sandhi pattern for गुरूपदेश. When you see an unexpected long vowel (ऊ, ई, आ) inside a compound, check if both parts carry the same short vowel. This covers गुरु + उपदेश, मुनि + इंद्र = मुनींद्र, विद्या + अर्थी = विद्यार्थी. Cuts identification from 25s guessing to 10s confirmation.
When you see a Sandhi question in the exam hall, run this sequence:
ष्, श्, स् in the compound → Visarg Sandhi. Done.ए or ओ → likely गुण संधिऐ or औ → likely वृद्धि संधिय्, व्, र् appeared → यण संधित् rules).When you see a Samas question:
और implied? → द्वंद्व. Stop.Total decision time: under 20 seconds for any Samas question.
Why this question: This is the most direct test of व्यंजन संधि. The trap is that the word looks like it could split at उच्च + अरण because उच्च is a familiar word.
Solving path: Spot the double consonant च्च in उच्चारण. Double consonants in sandhi splits almost always come from त्/द् meeting च. So the first part must end in त्. Work backwards: उत् is a standard Sanskrit prefix meaning up/above. Confirm: उत् + चारण = उच्चारण via त् + च = च्च. Mark option A immediately.
Why this question: द्वंद्व समास is one of the easier types but students second-guess themselves when both names are persons (thinking it might be तत्पुरुष).
Solving path: Apply the Third-Entity Test — does राम-श्याम point to some third thing? No, it refers to Ram and Shyam equally. Apply the equal-importance test — both words carry equal weight, and और fits naturally between them (राम और श्याम). This is द्वंद्व समास. The hyphen is a visual cue the exam uses for द्वंद्व compounds.
Why this question: गुण संधि is the most-tested vowel sandhi type. The confusion here is between गुण and दीर्घ, since both produce ए.
Solving path: Apply the आ + इ/ई = ए pattern. राजेश contains ए. The first part is राजा (ends in आ). The second part must start with इ or ई. ईश (lord) starts with ई. Confirm: आ + ई = ए → गुण संधि. Not दीर्घ (which would require same vowel meeting same vowel).
Why this question: गुण संधि with ऋ is a less common but high-value test. Students often guess दीर्घ because they see र् in the split.
Solving path: सप्तर्षि — the र् inside looks strange. Apply गुण संधि rule: अ + ऋ = अर्. So सप्त (ends in अ) + ऋषि (starts with ऋ) = सप्तर्षि. The trap option सप्त + र्षि invents a non-word र्षि. Real Sanskrit roots don't begin with र्षि — ऋषि is the actual word.
Why this question: अव्ययीभाव is consistently confused with तत्पुरुष in SSC exams because students see यथा + शक्ति and think "shaktiko yathanu" and call it तत्पुरुष.
Solving path: Apply the prefix trigger test — यथा is on the list. First word is an अव्यय. The entire compound यथाशक्ति functions as an अव्यय in a sentence ("वह यथाशक्ति काम करता है" — it modifies the verb, not a noun). That confirms अव्ययीभाव. तत्पुरुष would require the second word to be the main element naming a person, place, or thing — यथाशक्ति names neither.
Splitting at a recognizable sub-word instead of the true sandhi boundary. For उच्चारण, many students write उच्च + अरण because उच्च is a familiar word. Always trace back to a standard prefix (उत्, निः, सम्, सत्) before accepting a split.
Calling every ए in a compound गुण संधि. Check first: if both original vowels are अ (like अ + अ), the result आ is दीर्घ, not गुण. The merged vowel alone does not tell you the type — you need both input vowels.
Confusing कर्मधारय with बहुव्रीहि. The surface form can be identical. पीतांबर is बहुव्रीहि when it means Vishnu, कर्मधारय when it literally means yellow cloth. In SSC GD, named divine epithets (पीतांबर, चतुर्भुज, लंबोदर) are बहुव्रीहि — no exceptions in the question bank.
Writing the visarg split incorrectly. The split of निष्कपट is निः + कपट, not निष् + कपट. The visarg belongs entirely to the first word in the split form. Never attach ष् to the first part — it is a sandhi product, not part of the original word.
Treating all numeral-first compounds as द्विगु. चतुर्भुज has a numeral first (चतुर् = four) but it refers to Vishnu (four-armed one) → बहुव्रीहि. A genuine द्विगु describes a collection of that many things: त्रिलोक = the collection of three worlds.
Forgetting that दीर्घ संधि requires the same vowel class, not just any short vowel. अ + इ does not give दीर्घ — it gives गुण. Only अ + अ, इ + इ, उ + उ (and their long forms) produce दीर्घ. Mixing short उ + short इ and calling it दीर्घ is a classic 5th-option mistake.
