पर्यायवाची (Paryayvachi) and विलोम (Vilom) — synonyms and antonyms — are consistently among the most predictable question types in SSC GD Constable Hindi. Combined, they can account for a significant slice of your Hindi vocabulary section. The good news: this is a memorisation game with patterns, not a logic puzzle.
पर्यायवाची (Synonyms) are words that share the same or very close meaning. "राजा", "नृप", "भूपति", "नरेश" — all mean king. Hindi has a rich tradition of multiple words for the same concept, inherited from Sanskrit, Prakrit, and Persian sources simultaneously. This is why "वृक्ष" and "पेड़" mean the same thing even though one is Sanskrit-origin and the other is a more everyday Hindi term.
Think of paryayvachi like different roads leading to the same city. The destination (meaning) is identical; only the path (word) differs.
विलोम (Antonyms) are words with opposite meaning. "प्रकाश" (light) and "अंधकार" (darkness). "उन्नति" (progress/rise) and "अवनति" (decline/fall). These are not just "different" words — they occupy opposite ends of the same conceptual spectrum.
Think of vilom like a seesaw. Whatever goes up on one end goes down on the other. If "गर्म" (hot) is on the left, "ठंडा" (cold) is on the right. They cannot both be true for the same object at the same time.
Here is the analogy that sticks in the exam hall: paryayvachi words are siblings — same family, different names. Vilom words are opposites — same arena, different corners.
Why SSC GD asks this: The exam tests whether you understand the exact semantic weight of a word, not just rough familiarity. A question on "विद्वान" will offer "पंडित" and "ज्ञानी" as traps — words you associate with knowledge — while the correct antonym "मूर्ख" is the answer. These are designed to catch rote recognition rather than understanding.
SSC GD paryayvachi questions follow a consistent format: one target word is given, and you are asked to identify its synonym from four options. Three of the four options will typically be:
The correct answer is the word that can substitute the original word without changing the sentence's core meaning.
Key paryayvachi clusters to know:
Vilom questions are slightly trickier because the distractor options are often paryayvachi of the target word — words that belong to the same "camp" but are not the opposite. Look at the question on "प्रकाश": the distractors are "उजाला", "दीप", and "चांदनी" — all light-related. Only "अंधकार" is the true opposite.
This is the most common trap: the wrong options feel correct because they are familiar and connected to the target word.
Key vilom pairs to know:
| Word | Antonym | |------|---------| | प्रकाश (Light) | अंधकार (Darkness) | | उन्नति (Progress) | अवनति (Decline) | | विद्वान (Scholar) | मूर्ख (Fool) | | गर्म (Hot) | ठंडा (Cold) | | दिन (Day) | रात (Night) | | स्वर्ग (Heaven) | नरक (Hell) | | सुख (Happiness) | दुख (Sorrow) | | जीवन (Life) | मृत्यु (Death) | | सत्य (Truth) | असत्य/झूठ (Falsehood) | | आदि (Beginning) | अंत (End) | | आकाश (Sky) | पाताल (Underworld) | | सरल (Simple) | जटिल (Complex) | | प्रेम (Love) | घृणा (Hate) | | साहस (Courage) | कायरता (Cowardice) | | परिश्रम (Hard work) | आलस्य (Laziness) | | अमीर (Rich) | गरीब (Poor) | | शांति (Peace) | अशांति/कलह (Unrest) | | सृष्टि (Creation) | विनाश (Destruction) |
Many Hindi/Sanskrit antonyms are formed by adding a prefix to the original word. Recognising this pattern saves revision time:
Look — not every antonym follows a prefix rule, but when you see "अ-" added to a root word as an option, it is almost certainly the antonym. Use this as a filter in the exam hall.
SSC GD often pairs a tatsama (Sanskrit-origin) word as the question and includes both tatsama and tadbhava (evolved) options. For example, "वृक्ष" (tatsama) has paryayvachi "पेड़" (everyday Hindi). The exam tests whether you know both registers. Do not assume the synonym must also be a Sanskrit word.
In a vilom question, identify which options belong to the "same camp" as the target word and strike them out. For "प्रकाश", "उजाला", "दीप", and "चांदनी" are all in the "light" camp — eliminate all three. Whatever is left is your antonym. This works because SSC GD almost always loads three distractors from the same semantic field.
Standard method: read all options, think about each (45s). Elimination method: identify the camp, strike the camp members, circle the outlier (12s).
In paryayvachi questions, one distractor is almost always a part or component of the target word rather than its synonym. "वृक्ष" → "पत्ती" (leaf), "जड़" (root), "फल" (fruit) are all parts of a tree, not the tree itself. Train yourself to instantly tag options as "part of" vs "same as". If an option is a part, component, or function of the target word, it is wrong.
This check takes 3 seconds per option and eliminates the most common distractor type in paryayvachi questions.
For words denoting a person or role (राजा, शिक्षक, सेनापति), distractors are often people who interact with or serve that role. "राजा" distractors include "प्रजा" (subjects), "सेवक" (servant), "मंत्री" (minister). None of these are the king — they are people in the king's world. A true paryayvachi must be able to replace the word in the sentence "राजा ने आदेश दिया" without changing meaning. "नृप ने आदेश दिया" works. "मंत्री ने आदेश दिया" changes the sentence.
This substitution test takes 5 seconds and eliminates role-confusion distractors completely.
When stuck on a vilom question involving an abstract noun or adjective, check if any option is the root word with "अ-" prefixed. अ + सत्य = असत्य, अ + धर्म = अधर्म, अ + न्याय = अन्याय, अ + सम्भव = असम्भव. If you see such a formed option and it makes linguistic sense, it is very likely the correct antonym.
Standard method: recall from memory (variable time). Pattern check: scan options for अ-prefix form (4 seconds flat).
Several Hindi abstract nouns form antonym pairs where both words share the same suffix but differ in prefix direction. उन्नति (upward motion) vs अवनति (downward motion). उत्थान vs पतन. आरोहण vs अवरोहण. When you see a word with "उन्न-", "उत्-", or "आ-" (upward/toward directional), the antonym will carry "अव-", "पत-", or "वि-" (downward/away directional). This works because Sanskrit directional prefixes are consistent.
Recognising the directional prefix pair reduces a 4-option elimination to a 2-option choice in 6 seconds.
When a पर्यायवाची or विलोम question appears, move through this decision tree:
Step 1 — Identify question type. Is it asking for पर्यायवाची (same meaning) or विलोम (opposite)? This sounds obvious but students make type-confusion errors under time pressure.
Step 2 — Vilom path: Identify which "camp" the target word belongs to (light, heat, status, time, emotion, etc.). Strike all options in that same camp. The remaining option is your answer. If two options remain, apply the substitution test.
Step 3 — Paryayvachi path: Check each option — is it a synonym, or is it a part, component, role-associate, or antonym of the target? Strike parts and role-associates. The synonym is what survives.
Step 4 — Stuck? Use the prefix test. Does the target word have a prefix that suggests direction or negation? Find the option that reverses that prefix.
Step 5 — Last resort: substitution. Mentally place each option in a sample sentence using the target word. Which one fits with the exact same meaning? That is your paryayvachi. Which one creates an opposite sentence? That is your vilom.
Total time budget: 30-45 seconds per question. If you cross 45 seconds, mark your best guess and move on.
Why this question: प्रकाश-अंधकार is the most classic vilom pair in Hindi. The distractors are all light-synonyms — a perfect example of the same-camp trap.
Solving path: "उजाला", "दीप", "चांदनी" — all light-related, same camp, eliminate. "अंधकार" is the outlier = correct answer. Time: 8 seconds.
Why this question: राजा-नृप tests whether you know a Sanskrit synonym of an everyday word. The distractors (प्रजा, सेवक, मंत्री) are people in the king's court, not the king himself.
Solving path: Apply the role-vs-identity filter. प्रजा = subjects, सेवक = servant, मंत्री = minister — all associates, not synonyms. नृप = king in Sanskrit = correct paryayvachi. Time: 10 seconds.
Why this question: विद्वान-मूर्ख tests whether you can resist the pull of three knowledge-words. पंडित, ज्ञानी, बुद्धिमान all feel "correct" because they live in the same semantic neighbourhood as विद्वान.
Solving path: पंडित = scholar (paryayvachi), ज्ञानी = wise one (paryayvachi), बुद्धिमान = intelligent (paryayvachi) — all same camp. मूर्ख = fool = true opposite. Time: 8 seconds.
Why this question: उन्नति-अवनति is a high-frequency pair. The distractors (प्रगति, विकास, सफलता) are all paryayvachi of उन्नति, testing whether you confuse the question type.
Solving path: Question asks for विलोम. प्रगति, विकास, सफलता are all पर्यायवाची of उन्नति — eliminate. अवनति = decline = correct vilom. The "उन्न-" (upward) prefix tells you the antonym should carry a downward direction: "अव-" prefix in अवनति. Time: 10 seconds.
Why this question: स्वर्ग-नरक is a cultural knowledge + vocabulary overlap. The trap is बैकुंठ — it sounds different from स्वर्ग but is actually a name for a divine realm, making it a near-synonym, not an antonym.
Solving path: बैकुंठ = Vishnu's heaven = same camp as स्वर्ग. लोक and आकाश are unrelated. नरक = hell = direct opposite. Correct answer: नरक. Time: 10 seconds.
Confusing related words with synonyms. "पत्ती", "जड़", "फल" are parts of a वृक्ष, not synonyms. Any word that describes a component, function, or attribute of the target is not a paryayvachi. Only a direct substitute qualifies.
Picking a पर्यायवाची when the question asks for विलोम. SSC GD setters deliberately load three paryayvachi words as distractors in vilom questions. Reading the question word carefully — पर्यायवाची है or विलोम है — is non-negotiable before looking at options.
Treating बैकुंठ as different from स्वर्ग. Cultural knowledge matters here. बैकुंठ, वैकुण्ठ, स्वर्ग, और परलोक all refer to divine realms. Treating any of them as an antonym of स्वर्ग is wrong; नरक is the only correct antonym.
Missing the "अ-" prefix antonym because it looks unfamiliar. If you do not recognise a word but it is formed by placing "अ-" before a root you know, it is very likely a negation/antonym. Do not dismiss unfamiliar words without analysing their structure.
Forgetting that गुनगुना and उष्ण are variants of गर्म, not its antonym. Degree variations (lukewarm, very hot) are still on the same side of the spectrum as the original word. Only the word on the opposite end of the spectrum is the true vilom.
Assuming the synonym must be from the same language register. वृक्ष (Sanskrit) and पेड़ (common Hindi) are synonyms even though one is formal and the other everyday. Do not reject an option just because it looks "too simple" or "too classical" compared to the target word.
