Current Affairs is one of the most scoring and most unpredictable sections in SSC MTS GK. Unlike static topics — where you memorise a formula once and use it forever — Current Affairs demands that you track a rolling 12-to-18-month window of events. The good news: SSC MTS does not ask deep analytical questions. It asks factual recall. "Which country did X?" or "Who won Y award?" — the answers are binary, clean, and retrievable if you have the right mental filing system.
Think of Current Affairs as a newspaper you file into labelled folders, not a novel you read cover to cover. The folders that matter for SSC MTS are:
Here is the key insight that most candidates miss: SSC MTS questions cluster around firsts, records, and historical milestones, not routine month-to-month policy updates. When you study current affairs, ask yourself — "Is this the first time something happened? Is this a record? Is India the first/fourth/only country to do this?" Those are the questions that show up in the paper.
An analogy: think of a sports scoreboard. The crowd does not remember every ball; they remember the century, the hat-trick, the world record. SSC MTS Current Affairs works the same way — focus on the scoreboard moments, not the ball-by-ball commentary.
The five categories below are what SSC MTS has historically tested. Organise your revision around them.
India's space programme generates reliable questions. The pattern: mission name + launch date + achievement + what made it a first.
For Chandrayaan-3: landed August 23, 2023, South Pole of the Moon, India became the fourth country to achieve lunar landing (after USA, Russia, China) and the first to land near the South Pole. The lander was named Vikram; the rover was named Pragyan.
Aditya-L1 was launched September 2, 2023 — India's first solar observatory mission, placed at Lagrange Point 1 (L1) between Earth and the Sun.
G20 (2023): India held the G20 presidency throughout 2023. The Leaders' Summit was held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, in September 2023. India formally handed the presidency to Brazil at the close of the summit. The African Union was admitted as a permanent G20 member during India's presidency — a significant diplomatic achievement.
Black Sea Grain Initiative: Brokered by the UN and Turkey in July 2022 to allow Ukrainian grain exports through Black Sea corridors despite the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Russia withdrew from the initiative in July 2023, disrupting global food supply chains and pushing grain prices upward.
This is a standard SSC question cluster. Memorise all six:
| Category | Laureate(s) | Key Note | |---|---|---| | Physics | Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz, Anne L'Huillier | Attosecond pulses of light | | Chemistry | Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus, Alexei Ekimov | Quantum dots | | Medicine | Katalin Karikó, Drew Weissman | mRNA vaccine technology | | Literature | Jon Fosse (Norway) | Minimalist plays and prose | | Peace | Narges Mohammadi (Iran) | Women's rights activism | | Economics | Claudia Goldin | Women's labour market outcomes |
SSC MTS most commonly asks about Literature and Peace — these have the clearest "story" attached.
Uniform Civil Code (UCC): Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to implement the UCC in 2024, after the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly passed it. The UCC governs personal laws (marriage, divorce, inheritance) uniformly across all religions within the state.
HDFC Bank crossed ₹10 lakh crore market capitalisation in 2024, becoming the first Indian bank to reach this milestone. For context: ₹10 lakh crore is approximately USD 120 billion — this puts HDFC Bank among the top 15-20 banks globally by market value.
Neeraj Chopra at World Athletics Championships, Budapest 2023: Neeraj won silver in javelin throw with a distance of 88.13 metres, becoming the first Indian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships. Note: The question in your spec references "Eugene 2023" — the 2023 World Athletics Championships were actually held in Budapest, Hungary. The Eugene championships were in 2022. In the exam, focus on the core fact: Neeraj Chopra, silver, first Indian medal at World Athletics Championships.
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialised agency of the United Nations. Its annual flagship publication, "The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World," reported that approximately 735 million people (74.1 crore) faced hunger in 2022. FAO, not WHO or UNICEF, is the lead agency on food security reporting.
Use the acronym SPACE-G to remember the six current affairs buckets: Space, Politics/Policy, Awards, Conflicts/International, Economy, Games/Sports. Before starting any current affairs revision session, mentally tick off all six. If you are weak on one, you know immediately where to go. Standard approach (random revision): 40 minutes with gaps. This framework: 25 minutes with full coverage. Saves 15 minutes per session and ensures no category is missed.
When scanning news or revision material, mark only items that are: (1) a FIRST — "first Indian to...", "first state to...", (2) a RECORD — "largest", "highest", "first time since...", or (3) the ONLY — "only country that...". Skip everything else for SSC MTS prep. This eliminates roughly 70% of news content that will not appear in the exam. A full newspaper read: 45 minutes. FIRST-RECORD-ONLY scan: 12 minutes. 3x faster, with equal or better exam outcome.
Nobel Prizes come in pairs of associations: Literature = country + style (Jon Fosse, Norway, minimalist). Peace = country + cause (Narges Mohammadi, Iran, women's rights). Medicine = technology (Karikó and Weissman, mRNA). Learn the pair, not isolated facts. Standard memorisation (name only): takes 3 tries to stick. Pair method (name + anchor): sticks in 1 try. Reduces Nobel revision to under 5 minutes.
SSC MTS frequently asks "which organisation released report X?" Three anchors to fix permanently: FAO = food and agriculture reports. WHO = health and disease reports. World Bank/IMF = economy and poverty reports. The trap option in food security questions is always WHO — it sounds more famous, but the food report belongs to FAO. Recognition time with this anchor: 4 seconds. Without it: 20+ seconds of second-guessing.
Remember the G20 presidency chain as a relay race: Indonesia (2022) → India (2023) → Brazil (2024) → South Africa (2025). Whenever a question mentions the G20 summit and the year 2023, the answer involves India. Whenever the question asks "to whom did India hand over the presidency," the answer is Brazil. Memorising the chain (4 countries) takes 30 seconds and covers every possible angle of this question. Individual recall without the chain: unreliable.
When you see a Current Affairs question in the exam hall, run this decision sequence in under 10 seconds:
Step 1 — Identify the category. Is it Space, Awards, Economy, Sports, International, or Policy? This narrows the answer set immediately.
Step 2 — Apply FIRST-RECORD-ONLY. Does the question ask about a first or a record? If yes, you should have this in memory from your focused prep.
Step 3 — Use elimination on options. Look for the "too famous" trap option (e.g., WHO in a food security question, or Ukraine in a Russia-Ukraine question when the answer is actually Russia). Examiners routinely plant the more famous but wrong entity.
Step 4 — Anchor to India. For questions with Indian context, ask: "Is India the answer, or is another country that interacted with India the answer?" The G20 summit question is a good example — India hosted it, but you could confuse this with "which country received the presidency from India" (Brazil).
If you draw a blank after Step 4, mark your best guess and move on. Do not spend more than 45 seconds on any single Current Affairs question.
Why this question: Russia's withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative was a major geopolitical event affecting global food supply, a favourite SSC topic.
Solving path: The question names four countries involved in or around the Black Sea region. Turkey brokered the deal — so Turkey would not withdraw from its own arrangement. Ukraine was the exporting country — it would not withdraw from a deal that benefits it. Romania is a Black Sea country but was not a party to this initiative. Russia had the motive to exit (ongoing conflict with Ukraine), and the timeline matches. Answer: Russia.
Why this question: Banking milestones — especially "first Indian bank to" — are standard SSC GK. The ₹10 lakh crore figure makes the milestone memorable and distinctive.
Solving path: SBI is the largest bank by assets, so many candidates reflexively pick SBI. But market capitalisation (market cap) is different from assets — it is share price multiplied by total shares. HDFC Bank, a private sector bank, has consistently had higher market cap than SBI despite SBI being larger by loans and deposits. Eliminate SBI and Axis Bank; between ICICI and HDFC, HDFC crossed ₹10 lakh crore first. Answer: HDFC Bank.
Why this question: Chandrayaan-3 is among the most significant Indian science events of the decade. The "South Pole" and "fourth country" details are precise and testable.
Solving path: Chandrayaan-2 (2019) failed the landing phase — its lander crashed. Mangalyaan-2 is India's next Mars mission (not yet launched as of the question). Aditya-L1 is the solar mission, not a lunar mission. Only Chandrayaan-3 matches: successful lunar landing, August 23, 2023, South Pole. Answer: Chandrayaan-3.
Why this question: India's G20 presidency was a major diplomatic event. The question tests whether you know the host country as well as the presidency handover sequence.
Solving path: The question asks which country hosted the summit where India handed over the presidency. India handed over, so India must have hosted this particular summit — you hand over at your own summit. The summit was in New Delhi (Bharat Mandapam). Answer: India.
Why this question: Sports "firsts" for Indian athletes are among the most tested current affairs items. Neeraj Chopra's World Athletics medal is a landmark achievement.
Solving path: Kishore Jena and Murali Sreeshankar are real athletes but did not win medals at this championship. Avinash Sable is a middle-distance runner. The question specifically asks about the World Athletics Championships medal — Neeraj Chopra won silver in javelin throw. Answer: Neeraj Chopra.
Why this question: Report-to-organisation mapping is a regular trap. WHO and FAO are both UN agencies dealing with health and food — examiners exploit this confusion.
Solving path: WHO (World Health Organization) covers disease and health. UNICEF covers children. World Bank covers poverty and development finance. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) publishes annual food security reports — this is its primary mandate. Answer: FAO.
Why this question: Nobel Prize in Literature gets asked almost every year in SSC GK. The 2023 winner, Jon Fosse, is distinctive because he is Norwegian and relatively less globally famous than past winners.
Solving path: Annie Ernaux won Literature in 2022. Abdulrazak Gurnah won in 2021. Louise Glück won in 2020. The options are designed to confuse you across recent years. Fix 2023 = Jon Fosse (Norway). Answer: Jon Fosse.
Why this question: UCC implementation is a landmark constitutional event. "First state" questions are high-priority SSC targets.
Solving path: Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh are BJP-governed states but did not implement UCC first. Himachal Pradesh has a different political context. Uttarakhand was the pioneer — its assembly passed the UCC bill and it received gubernatorial assent in 2024. Answer: Uttarakhand.
Confusing SBI with HDFC on market cap questions. SBI is larger by total assets and loan book, but HDFC Bank has historically commanded a higher market capitalisation due to private-sector valuation premiums. Do not auto-select SBI for any "largest Indian bank" question — read whether it asks assets, deposits, branches, or market cap.
Mixing up Chandrayaan-2 and Chandrayaan-3. Chandrayaan-2 reached lunar orbit and deployed a rover (Pragyan) but the lander (Vikram) crashed on descent in 2019. Chandrayaan-3 is the successful landing in 2023. Both have a lander named Vikram and a rover named Pragyan — the mission number is the differentiator.
Selecting WHO for food security reports. WHO deals with health. FAO deals with food and agriculture. The full name FAO ("Food and Agriculture Organization") is your anchor — the word "food" is literally in the name.
Mixing G20 host and presidency receiver. In 2023, India both hosted the summit and held the presidency. Brazil received the presidency for 2024. Do not confuse the country that received the presidency (Brazil) with the country that hosted the 2024 summit (also Brazil, but that is coincidental — Brazil held both).
Getting Nobel years wrong. The options for Nobel Prize questions routinely include winners from adjacent years. Fix a year-to-name anchor: 2023 Literature = Jon Fosse, 2022 Literature = Annie Ernaux, 2021 Literature = Abdulrazak Gurnah. Three anchors prevent four to six wrong answers.
Overlooking the "South Pole" detail for Chandrayaan-3. The question may not just ask which mission landed — it may ask which country was first to land near the South Pole. The answer remains India (via Chandrayaan-3), and no other country had achieved a South Pole landing before August 23, 2023.
