क्रिया-विशेषण (Kriya Visheshan) literally means "the descriptor of a verb." In Hindi grammar, a kriya visheshan is a word that modifies a verb, telling you how, when, where, or how much the action happens.
Look at this sentence: "वह तेज़ दौड़ता है।" (He runs fast.) Here, "तेज़" modifies "दौड़ता है" — it tells you how he runs. That word "तेज़" is a kriya visheshan.
Here's the clearest analogy for this: imagine the verb as the main actor in a film. Kriya visheshan is the director giving instructions — "run faster," "arrive tomorrow," "stand here," "eat more." Without those instructions, the verb just performs a bare action. With kriya visheshan, the action gets a full picture.
What makes kriya visheshan distinct from विशेषण (visheshan/adjective)? A visheshan modifies a noun or pronoun: "मीठा आम" (sweet mango — मीठा describes आम). A kriya visheshan modifies a verb: "वह धीरे बोला" (He spoke slowly — धीरे describes बोला). This distinction is tested directly in the exam — you will be shown a word and asked whether it is a visheshan or a kriya visheshan. The test: can you put it in a sentence where it sits right next to a verb and modifies it? If yes, it is a kriya visheshan.
A useful grammatical test in Hindi: kriya visheshan words are typically invariable — they do not change with gender or number. "वह तेज़ दौड़ती है / वह तेज़ दौड़ता है" — "तेज़" stays "तेज़" regardless. A visheshan, however, often inflects: "मीठी रोटी / मीठा खाना."
Kriya visheshan is divided into four main types, and nearly every UP Police exam question on this topic asks you to identify which type a given word belongs to. Know these four cold.
These tell you how an action is performed — the manner or method.
Key words: तेज़, धीरे, अचानक, ध्यान से, झटपट, सहसा, ख़ुशी से, साफ़
Example sentences:
Ritivachak adverbs often answer the question: "कैसे?" (How?)
These tell you when the action happens — past, present, future, frequency.
Key words: आज, कल, परसों, अभी, तुरंत, रोज़, हमेशा, कभी, सुबह, शाम, जब, तब
Example sentences:
Kalvachak adverbs answer: "कब?" (When?)
These tell you where the action happens — location or direction.
Key words: यहाँ, वहाँ, ऊपर, नीचे, पास, दूर, अंदर, बाहर, दाएँ, बाएँ, सामने
Example sentences:
Sthanvachak adverbs answer: "कहाँ?" (Where?)
These tell you how much or to what extent the action happens.
Key words: बहुत, थोड़ा, काफ़ी, बिल्कुल, ज़्यादा, कम, अत्यंत, पर्याप्त, लगभग
Example sentences:
Parimanvachak adverbs answer: "कितना?" (How much?)
Beyond semantic types, kriya visheshan is also classified structurally:
UP Police exam setters love to test this. A noun, adjective, or even a complete phrase can function as a kriya visheshan when placed contextually before a verb. For example:
When you see a word that looks like an adjective listed as a kriya visheshan option, check: does it modify a verb in the given sentence? That is the decisive question.
When any word is presented and you must identify its type of kriya visheshan, ask these four questions in sequence about what the word answers in the sentence:
Worked example: "वह बिल्कुल थक गया।" — Does "बिल्कुल" answer कैसे? No. कब? No. कहाँ? No. कितना? Yes — to what extent did he tire? Completely. → परिमाणवाचक.
Standard method: Read and recall the definition of all four types (30-45 seconds). Shortcut: Run the 4-question test (under 10 seconds per word).
Memorize the four types in a fixed sequence using the initial letters: र, क, स, प — or read it as a Hindi phrase: "राम कल सुबह पहुँचेगा" (Ram will arrive tomorrow morning).
The phrase itself contains a kalvachak (कल) and a kalvachak (सुबह), so it is self-referential and easier to remember. This reduces a 4-item memorization task to 1 sentence. Recall speed: under 3 seconds once drilled.
The most common trap in this chapter: a word that can be both a visheshan and a kriya visheshan. Elimination method:
Step count: Standard approach (define both, compare) = 4-5 steps. This elimination = 2 steps: (1) find what the word is pointing to, (2) noun → visheshan, verb → kriya visheshan. Cuts decision time from ~40s to ~15s.
Words that express intensity, totality, or extent are almost always परिमाणवाचक क्रिया-विशेषण when they modify a verb. Build a quick mental list: बिल्कुल, बहुत, काफ़ी, थोड़ा, ज़्यादा, कम, अत्यंत, पूरी तरह.
Worked micro-example: Exam shows "वह काफ़ी समझदार है।" — is "काफ़ी" a kriya visheshan here? No — it modifies "समझदार" which is an adjective, not a verb. So here it functions as an adverb of degree modifying an adjective, not a verb. But in "उसने काफ़ी खाया" — "काफ़ी" modifies "खाया" (verb). Always check the actual target word, not just the adverb.
This pattern recognition reduces multi-sentence analysis from 4 steps to 1 lookup.
In the exam hall, when you see a kriya visheshan question, use this decision path:
Step 1 — Is a sentence given?
Step 2 — Find the verb in the sentence. Underline it mentally. Now find the word being tested. Does it point to that verb? If yes, it is a kriya visheshan.
Step 3 — Run the 4-question test. Ask कैसे / कब / कहाँ / कितना in that order. Stop at the first "yes."
Step 4 — Elimination. If two options look similar (e.g., रीतिवाचक vs. परिमाणवाचक), remember: manner = method of doing, degree = extent/intensity. "बिल्कुल", "बहुत", "थोड़ा" → degree. "अचानक", "धीरे", "सहसा" → manner.
Target time per question: 20-25 seconds. Do not re-read the sentence more than twice.
Why this question: This tests whether you can identify a kriya visheshan from a list of words that includes adjectives, nouns, and adverbs — a classic distractor format.
Solving path: Look at each option:
Why this question: This is the most directly useful question type — a complete sentence with the adverb underlined, and you must classify it. This tests genuine understanding of परिमाणवाचक vs. the other three types.
Solving path: The sentence is "वह बिल्कुल थक गया है।" Verb = थक गया है. The word being tested = बिल्कुल. Run the 4-question test:
Why this question: This is a clean, direct test of कालवाचक identification — exactly the type that appears most frequently in UP Police Hindi sections.
Solving path: The sentence is "मैं रोज़ पढ़ता हूँ।" Verb = पढ़ता हूँ. The word being tested = रोज़. Run the test:
Note: Option A says "परिणामवाचक" — this is a distractor confusing it with परिमाणवाचक. These two look similar in print and are a frequent confusion point. परिणामवाचक is not a standard primary type in most grammar frameworks; परिमाणवाचक (degree) is.
Confusing रीतिवाचक and परिमाणवाचक: "अचानक" and "बिल्कुल" both sit before verbs and both are common. The test: does the word describe how the action was done (manner/method) → रीतिवाचक, or how much/to what extent → परिमाणवाचक. "अचानक" = suddenly, a method. "बिल्कुल" = completely, a degree.
Treating all time-related words as कालवाचक: Words like "धीरे-धीरे" involve repetition but describe manner, not time. "रोज़" = time. "सुबह-सुबह" = time. But "झटपट" = quickly = manner. Do not auto-classify a word as kaal just because it feels time-adjacent.
Ignoring sentence context for identification: Many students identify a word's type by looking it up in memory rather than checking the sentence. "सीधे" in "सीधे जाओ" = स्थानवाचक (direction). "सीधे" in "वह सीधे बोलता है" = रीतिवाचक (manner). The same word, different types in different sentences. Always check the sentence.
Confusing विशेषण and क्रिया-विशेषण in standalone-word questions: When a question lists words and asks which is a kriya visheshan without a sentence, default to: does this word typically function to modify verbs in standard usage? Words like "तेज़", "धीरे", "अचानक", "यहाँ", "कल" are default adverbs. Words like "मीठा", "सुंदर", "बुद्धिमान" are default adjectives.
परिणामवाचक vs. परिमाणवाचक confusion: Some older textbooks and some question papers use "परिणामवाचक" as a label. In standard modern Hindi grammar (as tested in UP Police), the correct primary term is परिमाणवाचक. If both appear as options, go with परिमाणवाचक for degree/extent adverbs.
Forgetting that compound phrases can be kriya visheshan: "ध्यान से", "प्यार से", "खुशी से" are all ritivachak kriya visheshan. Students sometimes mark these as noun phrases or prepositional phrases and miss the question. If it ends in "से" and modifies a verb, it is almost certainly रीतिवाचक.
