advanced 18 min read

S1: "Electric cars produce no exhaust emissions." S2: "However, the electricity to charge them may come from fossil fuel sources."

S1: "True knowledge is true power." S2: "A little knowledge however is a dangerous thing."

"Many hands make light work." vs "Too many cooks spoil the broth."

S2 ने S1 को qualify किया — collaboration helpful है, but only up to a point

Master List

| संबंध | Key Signal Words | |---|---| | Contradiction | directly states opposite, no qualifier, same subject | | Contrast | different subjects/places/times, opposite qualities, both true | | Confirmation | therefore, thus, this shows, doctors say, research confirms, similar proverb | | Qualification | however, but, yet, although, only if, except, a little, too much |

— Contradiction Eliminator

pattern'However' देखो — तुरंत Qualification Flag करो

CDS के qualification questions में "however", "but", "yet" जैसे adversative conjunctions लगभग हमेशा present होते हैं।

→ Qualification।

"Slow and steady wins" → message: patience wins। "Haste makes waste" → message: rushing loses।

Standard: 35 seconds; shortcut: 10 seconds।

eliminationSubject Switch Test — Contrast बनाम Contradiction

हाँ (Delhi vs Shimla, Everest vs K2, bananas vs doctors) → Contrast या Confirmation candidate। (Everest is tallest vs K2 is taller than Everest — दोनों में Everest vs other peaks का comparison) → Contradiction candidate।

Contradiction — Scope Check

"True knowledge is power" (S1) → "Little knowledge is dangerous" (S2): S2 ने यह नहीं कहा knowledge power नहीं होती — बस कहा अधूरी knowledge के लिए यह formula काम नहीं करता। Scope restricted → Qualification

"Bananas have potassium" (S1) → "Bananas have no potassium" → यह किसी भी case में सच नहीं होने देता → Contradiction (यह example है, actual PYQ नहीं)।

3 options eliminate: 30 seconds → 8 seconds।

Step 2: S2 पढ़ो, signal words देखो — "however", "but", "yet" दिखे?

→ Qualification।

Previous Year Question
S1: Summer in Delhi is extremely hot. S2: Summer in Shimla is quite cold. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
Both sentences talk about summer but in different locations (Delhi and Shimla) with opposite weather conditions (hot vs cold). This is not a contradiction because both can be true simultaneously - they refer to different places. The second sentence presents an opposing example to highlight the difference, which is the function of contrast. Therefore, the second sentence contrasts the assertion of the first.

Previous Year Question
S1: Bananas are a good source of potassium. S2: Doctors often recommend bananas to maintain healthy levels of potassium. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
The first sentence states that bananas are a good source of potassium. The second sentence provides supporting evidence by noting that doctors recommend bananas for maintaining potassium levels - this reinforces and validates the first statement. The second sentence confirms (affirms/supports) the assertion made in the first. Therefore, the second sentence confirms the assertion of the first.

दोनों same direction में → Confirmation

"However" signal word present है।

Previous Year Question
S1: Electric cars produce no exhaust emissions. S2: However, the electricity to charge them may come from fossil fuel sources. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
The first sentence makes a claim about electric cars having no exhaust emissions. The second sentence doesn't deny this but adds a limiting condition - that the electricity may come from fossil fuels, which has its own environmental impact. The word 'however' signals that the second sentence modifies or restricts the scope of the first. This is qualification - adding a caveat or condition. Therefore, the second sentence qualifies the assertion of the first.

"However" + partial restriction → Qualification

Previous Year Question
S1: Mount Everest is the tallest peak in the world. S2: K2 in the Karakoram Range is taller than Mount Everest. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
The first sentence asserts that Mount Everest is the tallest peak. The second sentence directly opposes this by claiming K2 is taller than Mount Everest. Both statements cannot be true at the same time - they make mutually exclusive claims about which peak is tallest. This is direct contradiction. Therefore, the second sentence contradicts the assertion of the first.

Previous Year Question
S1: True knowledge is true power. S2: A little knowledge however is a dangerous thing. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
The first sentence praises true knowledge as power. The second sentence doesn't deny this but adds an important condition - that incomplete or shallow knowledge is dangerous. The word 'however' signals a qualification - the assertion holds only when knowledge is true/complete. This limits and refines the first statement without contradicting it. Therefore, the second sentence qualifies the assertion of the first.

S2 — "little knowledge = dangerous।" Scope restriction → Qualification

Previous Year Question
S1: Slow and steady wins the race. S2: Haste makes waste. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
Both proverbs convey the same message - that rushing leads to poor outcomes while taking time leads to success. 'Slow and steady wins the race' praises measured progress, and 'Haste makes waste' warns against rushing. The second sentence reinforces and supports the message of the first. Therefore, the second sentence confirms the assertion of the first.

समाधान का रास्ता: "Slow and steady wins the race" → message: धीरे और consistently काम करो, सफलता मिलेगी। "Haste makes waste" → message: जल्दबाज़ी = failure। दोनों का निष्कर्ष एक ही है — rushing is bad, steadiness is good। Same direction → Confirmation।

Previous Year Question
S1: Many hands make light work. S2: Too many cooks spoil the broth. The second sentence:
  1. contradicts the assertion of the first
  2. contrasts the assertion of the first
  3. confirms the assertion of the first
  4. qualifies the assertion of the first
Solution
The first proverb says that more people working together makes work easier. The second proverb warns that too many people can ruin a task. The second sentence doesn't directly contradict the first - both can be true depending on circumstances. It adds a condition: cooperation helps, but only up to a point. This is qualification - placing a limit on the first assertion. Therefore, the second sentence qualifies the assertion of the first.

समाधान का रास्ता: "Many hands make light work" → ज़्यादा लोग = काम आसान। "Too many cooks spoil the broth" → ज़्यादा लोग = बर्बादी। S2 ने S1 की claim को "too many" की condition से restrict किया → Qualification।
