CDS English: भाषा के भाग एवं शब्द निर्माण — Parts of Speech

intermediate 18 min read

→ "Swimming is good." — Swimming subject है, इसलिए noun।
  2. क्या यह किसी preposition का object है? → "afraid of heights" — heights, "of" का object है।
  3. क्या इसके पहले article (a/an/the) या determiner (my/his/the) आ सकता है?

Gerund — क्रिया से बनी संज्ञा: जब किसी verb में -ing जोड़कर उसे noun की तरह इस्तेमाल किया जाए, वह Gerund है। "Swimming is good for health" में "Swimming" gerund है — यह verb की तरह दिखता है पर काम noun का करता है (वाक्य का subject है)।

Gerund को Present Participle से अलग करो:

क्रिया (Verb) — काम बताने वाला

Verb वाक्य की जान है। पहचान:

ध्यान रखो: "finance" अक्सर noun की तरह इस्तेमाल होता है ("personal finance"), पर जब modal के बाद object लेकर आए — तब verb है।

विशेषण (Adjective) — गुण बताने वाला

Adjective किसी noun या pronoun की विशेषता बताता है।

कसौटी: क्या यह शब्द किसी noun को describe कर रहा है, या किसी स्थिति की quality बता रहा है?

"It is obligatory for all employees..." — यहाँ "obligatory" पूरी situation की quality बता रहा है (linking verb "is" के बाद predicative adjective के रूप में)। यह noun को directly modify नहीं कर रहा पर फिर भी adjective है।

Adjective बनाने के patterns (Word Formation): | Suffix | उदाहरण | |--------|---------| | -ory | obligatory, compulsory | | -ive | protective, creative | | -ful | careful, powerful | | -less | careless, hopeless | | -al | local, national | | -ous | dangerous, famous |

क्रिया-विशेषण (Adverb) — क्रिया को modify करने वाला

Adverb, verb / adjective / दूसरे adverb को modify करता है।

तीन key tests:

  1. Verb को modify करे: "aching terribly" — terribly बता रहा है कि कैसे ache हो रहा है।
  2. Direction/manner बताए: "Turn right" — right बता रहा है कि किस दिशा में turn करना है।
  3. Order/sequence बताए: "came first" — first बता रहा है कि किस क्रम में आए।

Adverb बनाने का pattern: अधिकतर adjective + -ly = adverb।

पर सभी -ly शब्द adverb नहीं होते: "friendly" adjective है, "lonely" adjective है।

Preposition — सम्बन्ध बताने वाला

Preposition किसी noun/pronoun का सम्बन्ध वाक्य के दूसरे शब्दों से जोड़ता है — स्थान, समय, या दिशा के अर्थ में।

"during our winter holidays" — "during" समय का सम्बन्ध जोड़ रहा है। यह "holidays" (noun phrase) को बाकी वाक्य से connect करता है।

Common time prepositions: during, before, after, since, until, throughout।

शब्द निर्माण (Word Formation) — एक शब्द से अनेक

CDS में यह भी पूछा जाता है कि किसी base word से बने अलग-अलग forms कौन-से part of speech होंगे।

| Base | Noun | Verb | Adjective | Adverb | |------|------|------|-----------|--------| | finance | finance | finance | financial | financially | | oblige | obligation | oblige | obligatory | obligatorily | | terror | terror | terrify | terrible/terrifying | terribly | | protect | protection | protect | protective | protectively |

इस table का सीधा उपयोग: जब एक वाक्य में word का form दिया हो और उसका part of speech पूछा जाए — suffix देखो और ऊपर के patterns से मिलाओ।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternSVOCA Framework — 5 सेकंड में Part of Speech

वाक्य को SVOCA structure में तोड़ो: Subject (S) → Verb (V) → Object (O) → Complement (C) → Adverbial (A)।

जो शब्द S की जगह हो — Noun/Pronoun/Gerund। जो V की जगह हो — Verb। जो O की जगह हो — Noun। जो Noun को describe करे — Adjective। जो Verb/Adj को describe करे — Adverb।

उदाहरण: "Swimming [S] is [V] good [C] for health [A]।" — Swimming = S की जगह → Gerund (Noun type) — good = complement → Adjective

Standard method (सोचते रहो): 30 सेकंड। यह framework: 8 सेकंड।

eliminationModal Test — Verb की 100% पहचान

जब doubt हो कि कोई शब्द noun है या verb — उसके पहले modal verb (can/could/will/would/should/must/may) रखकर देखो।

"finance" → "could finance" — natural लगता है? हाँ → Verb। "finance" → "could money" — बेतुका → money, verb नहीं।

यह test उन शब्दों पर सबसे कारगर है जो noun और verb दोनों होते हैं: finance, water, police, light, book, hand।

Standard method (context पढ़ते रहो): 20 सेकंड। Modal Test: 5 सेकंड।

elimination-ly Suffix Trap — Adverb नहीं, Adjective भी

सभी -ly ending शब्द adverb नहीं होते। इस list को याद रखो — ये सब Adjective हैं:

friendly, lovely, lonely, elderly, lively, likely, unlikely, deadly, orderly, timely।

Test: क्या यह शब्द noun को describe कर रहा है? → Adjective। क्या verb/adjective को modify कर रहा है? → Adverb।

"a friendly soldier" → friendly + noun = Adjective। "He smiled terribly" → terribly + verb = Adverb।

यह trap CDS में बार-बार आती है। इस step को skip करने पर गलत उत्तर तय है।

patternGerund vs Participle — एक सवाल, 3 सेकंड में जवाब

-ing form देखते ही तीन positions चेक करो:

  1. वाक्य का Subject है → Gerund ("Swimming is fun")
  2. Preposition के बाद है → Gerund ("fond of swimming")
  3. Helping verb (is/are/was/were) के बाद है → Present Participle ("He is swimming")
  4. Noun के पहले है → Adjective ("swimming pool")

यह 4-position rule standard grammar reading (45+ सेकंड) की जगह 3 सेकंड में काम करता है।

patternPreposition पहचानने का Time-Place-Direction Test

जब doubt हो कि कोई शब्द preposition है या conjunction — यह check करो:

क्या यह शब्द अकेले एक noun/noun phrase के साथ आता है और उसका सम्बन्ध बताता है? → Preposition। क्या यह दो clauses (Subject+Verb) को जोड़ता है? → Conjunction।

"during our holidays" → "our holidays" = noun phrase → Preposition। "while he was sleeping" → "he was sleeping" = full clause → Conjunction

Standard method: paragraph पढ़कर सोचो। यह test: 4 सेकंड।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

CDS में जब कोई underlined शब्द का part of speech पूछे, तो यह decision sequence follow करो:

Step 1 — Function देखो (shape नहीं): क्या यह शब्द वाक्य का subject है? → Noun/Pronoun/Gerund। क्या modal/helping verb के बाद है और object ले रहा है? → Verb।

Step 2 — Modify करने की दिशा देखो: Noun को describe करे → Adjective। Verb/Adjective को describe करे → Adverb।

Step 3 — -ing form हो तो: Subject/Object की जगह → Gerund। Helping verb के बाद → Participle।

Step 4 — Connecting शब्द हो तो: Noun phrase से पहले, time/place/direction बताए → Preposition। दो clauses जोड़े → Conjunction।

Golden Rule: शब्द की अपनी dictionary meaning नहीं — वाक्य में उसकी भूमिका देखो। "right" direction में adverb है, "right choice" में adjective है, "your rights" में noun है।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "first" एक ऐसा शब्द है जो noun, adjective, और adverb तीनों हो सकता है। CDS इसी ambiguity को test करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "came first" में "first" क्रिया "came" को modify कर रहा है — यह बता रहा है कि "आना" किस क्रम में हुआ। Verb को modify करने वाला शब्द = Adverb। Modal test: "came how? → first" — यह manner/order बताता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Who came first in the race?
  1. Preposition
  2. Adjective
  3. Adverb
  4. Article
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'Who came first in the race?', the word 'first' describes how or when someone 'came' - it modifies the verb 'came', indicating the manner or order of the action. Words that modify verbs are adverbs. Here 'first' functions as an adverb of order/sequence describing the action of coming. Therefore, the correct word class is adverb.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "obligatory" suffix -ory वाले adjectives को लोग अक्सर adverb समझ लेते हैं क्योंकि ये "-ly" की तरह uncommon लगते हैं।

समाधान का रास्ता: "It is obligatory" — linking verb "is" के बाद आया है। Linking verb के बाद subject complement आता है, जो noun या adjective होता है। "obligatory" किसी noun को नहीं — situation की quality बता रहा है। इसलिए यह Predicative Adjective है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
It is obligatory for all employees to wear protective clothing.
  1. Noun
  2. Adjective
  3. Adverb
  4. Participle
Solutionसमाधान
The word 'obligatory' describes the quality of something being required or mandatory. In this sentence, it describes the state of wearing protective clothing - characterizing it as compulsory. Words that describe or qualify nouns/situations are adjectives. 'Obligatory' is an adjective meaning required by rule or law. Therefore, the correct word class is adjective.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "right" — अत्यंत tricky शब्द। Direction में adverb, correctness में adjective, entitlement में noun।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Turn right" — "right" यहाँ verb "turn" को modify कर रहा है। यह बता रहा है कि turn किस direction में होगा। Verb को modify करना = Adverb का काम। "Turn" के बाद कोई noun नहीं है जिसे "right" describe करे — इसलिए adjective नहीं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Turn right at the end of the street.
  1. Adjective
  2. Adverb
  3. Noun
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'Turn right at the end of the street', the word 'right' modifies the verb 'turn', indicating the direction in which to turn. Words that modify verbs are adverbs. Here 'right' functions as an adverb of direction. While 'right' can be used as a noun or adjective in other contexts, in this sentence it modifies the verb 'turn' and therefore is an adverb.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Gerund vs Present Participle — CDS का सबसे classic trap। दोनों में -ing है, पर काम अलग।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Swimming is good for health" — "Swimming" वाक्य का subject है। Subject की जगह noun आता है। -ing form जब subject/object बने → Gerund। अगर यह "He is swimming" होता → Present Participle।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Swimming is good for health.
  1. Participle
  2. Verb
  3. Noun
  4. Gerund
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'Swimming is good for health', the word 'Swimming' is the subject of the verb 'is'. When an -ing form of a verb is used as a noun (especially as a subject or object), it is called a gerund. Here 'Swimming' functions as the subject of the sentence and represents the activity of swimming as a noun-like concept. Therefore, the correct word class is gerund.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "-ly" ending = Adverb — यह rule 95% सही है, पर CDS इसी 5% पर trap करता है। "terribly" genuine adverb है — पर confirm करने का process जानना ज़रूरी है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "aching terribly" — "terribly" verb "aching" को modify कर रहा है। यह बता रहा है कि दर्द कितनी intensity से हो रहा है (degree adverb)। "-ly" + verb को modify करे → Adverb। यह friendly/lonely type नहीं है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
My arms are aching terribly.
  1. Noun
  2. Adjective
  3. Adverb
  4. Participle
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'My arms are aching terribly', the word 'terribly' modifies the verb 'aching', describing the intensity or degree of the aching. Words that modify verbs and end in -ly typically indicate adverbs of manner or degree. 'Terribly' here functions as an adverb of degree, telling how the arms are aching. Therefore, the correct word class is adverb.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "finance" noun की तरह प्रसिद्ध है (personal finance, Ministry of Finance)। CDS यही test करता है — क्या तुम context में verb पहचान सकते हो?

समाधान का रास्ता: "could not finance the project" — "could not" modal है। Modal के बाद base form आता है। "finance" यहाँ "the project" (object) ले रहा है। Modal + base verb + object = यह structure verb का है। इसलिए "finance" यहाँ Verb है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
The local council could not finance the project as planned.
  1. Noun
  2. Verb
  3. Adverb
  4. Participle
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'The local council could not finance the project as planned', the word 'finance' follows the modal 'could not' and takes 'the project' as its object. This shows that 'finance' is being used as the main verb of the sentence, meaning 'to provide funding for'. While 'finance' can be a noun in other contexts, here it clearly functions as a verb. Therefore, the correct word class is verb.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "during" को लोग conjunction मान लेते हैं क्योंकि यह "while" की तरह time बताता है। पर "while" conjunction है, "during" preposition।

समाधान का रास्ता: "during our winter holidays" — "during" के बाद "our winter holidays" है जो एक noun phrase है (full clause नहीं)। Noun phrase के पहले आकर सम्बन्ध जोड़ने वाला = Preposition। अगर "while we were on winter holidays" होता → conjunction "while"।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
We met a lot of interesting people during our winter holidays.
  1. Conjunction
  2. Preposition
  3. Article
  4. Participle
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'We met a lot of interesting people during our winter holidays', the word 'during' shows the relationship between the meeting and the time period (winter holidays). It indicates time and connects a noun phrase to the rest of the sentence. Words that show relationships of time, place, or direction between nouns and other elements are prepositions. Therefore, 'during' is a preposition.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "heights" को abstract concept के रूप में पहचानना — concrete objects की तरह noun पहचानना आसान है, पर abstract nouns पर CDS specifically test करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "afraid of heights" — "of" एक preposition है। Preposition का object हमेशा noun/pronoun होता है। "heights" यहाँ "of" का object है। इसलिए "heights" Noun है — यह high places की अवधारणा को represent करता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Vicky refused to join the trek to the hills because he is afraid of heights.
  1. Verb
  2. Adverb
  3. Noun
  4. Adjective
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence, the word 'heights' is the object of the preposition 'of'. Words that function as objects of prepositions and name things or concepts are nouns. 'Heights' here refers to high places or elevations as a concept that Vicky fears. Therefore, the correct word class is noun.
