जैसे — on, in, at, into, beside, besides। इसे ऐसे समझो: अगर "table" एक मंच है, तो preposition बताता है कि चीज़ उस मंच के ऊपर है, नीचे है, पास है, या अंदर है।

निर्धारक (Determiner) वो शब्द है जो किसी संज्ञा से पहले आकर यह तय करता है कि वो संज्ञा कितनी है, कौन-सी है, और कैसी है। इसमें articles (a, an, the), quantifiers (some, any, few, little, many, much, each, every, either, neither, both, all) और demonstratives (this, that, these, those) शामिल हैं।

दोनों में वही शब्द गलत होते हैं जो देखने में मिलते-जुलते हैं — जैसे beside बनाम besides, in बनाम into, few बनाम little

गहन विश्लेषण

पूर्वसर्ग: Fixed Collocations जो याद करने पड़ते हैं

CDS में prepositions के अधिकतर प्रश्न fixed collocations पर होते हैं — यानी ऐसे शब्द-युगल जो हमेशा एक निश्चित preposition के साथ आते हैं। इन्हें logic से नहीं, exposure से सीखा जाता है।

महत्वपूर्ण Fixed Collocations:

| Collocation | Preposition | गलत विकल्प जो दिए जाते हैं | |---|---|---| | on the Internet | on | in, at, through | | enter into an agreement | into | in, at, unto | | arrive at (छोटी जगह) | at | in, on | | arrive in (बड़ा शहर/देश) | in | at, on | | consist of | of | from, in | | deal with | with | in, at | | result in | in | from, into | | result from | from | in, of | | differ from | from | with, in | | interfere with | with | in, at |

"On" बनाम "In" बनाम "At" — माध्यम के साथ:

"Beside" बनाम "Besides" — यह trap सबसे ज़्यादा आता है

CDS 2026 में यही प्रश्न आया था — "besides hockey" सही था क्योंकि अर्थ था "hockey के अलावा"।

निर्धारक: Quantifiers का सबसे ज़रूरी Framework

यह framework याद कर लो — CDS में बार-बार काम आता है:

Countable Nouns (गणनीय संज्ञाएँ) के साथ:

Uncountable Nouns (अगणनीय संज्ञाएँ) के साथ:

दोनों के साथ:

"Few" बनाम "Little" — सबसे common गलती

| Determiner | प्रयोग | अर्थ | |---|---|---| | few | countable plural | बहुत कम (नकारात्मक) | | a few | countable plural | कुछ (सकारात्मक) | | little | uncountable | बहुत कम (नकारात्मक) | | a little | uncountable | थोड़ा (सकारात्मक) |

Dr. Kumar has little time — सही (time = uncountable + नकारात्मक भाव) Dr. Kumar has few time — गलत (few countable के साथ)

"Any" — तीन अलग-अलग प्रयोग

  1. नकारात्मक वाक्यों में: I don't want any more vegetables. (कोई भी नहीं)
  2. प्रश्नवाचक वाक्यों में: Do you have any questions?
  3. सकारात्मक वाक्यों में singular countable के साथ (= every one): Any student could tell you. (कोई भी छात्र = हर छात्र)

यह तीसरा प्रयोग सबसे ज़्यादा confuse करता है। जब affirmative sentence में singular countable noun के साथ any आए, तो इसका मतलब है "कोई भी, बिना अपवाद के।"

"Each" बनाम "Every" बनाम "All"

Each तब चुनो जब emphasis individual instances पर हो — जैसे "दो-तीन बार call किया, हर बार कोई नहीं उठाया।"

"Either" बनाम "Both" बनाम "All"

Either हमेशा singular verb और singular noun के साथ: Either road is fine.

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternMEDIA Preposition Formula

Electronic/Digital माध्यम = ON: on the Internet, on TV, on the radio, on your phone Print माध्यम = IN: in the newspaper, in a book, in a magazine यह pattern याद रखो: Digital = ON, Print = IN जब भी "Internet" के साथ blank दिखे — directly "on" लिखो, सोचो मत। Standard method: सोचने में 20s → Pattern से: 3s

patternBESIDE vs BESIDES — Location vs Addition

BESIDE में कोई 'S' extra नहीं → Physical Space में कोई extra नहीं → बस next to (बगल में) BESIDES में 'S' extra है → कुछ extra जोड़ना है → in addition to (के अलावा) Micro-example: "What do you do besides teaching?" — teaching के अलावा extra क्या करते हो? Standard method: दोनों शब्द पढ़कर confuse होना 30s → Trick से: 5s

eliminationFEW-LITTLE Test: क्या तुम गिन सकते हो?

खुद से पूछो: "क्या मैं इस noun को 1, 2, 3 करके गिन सकता हूँ?"

  • गिन सकते हो → Countable → FEW / A FEW
  • नहीं गिन सकते → Uncountable → LITTLE / A LITTLE फिर पूछो: "नकारात्मक भाव है?" → हाँ तो FEW/LITTLE; "सकारात्मक भाव?" → तो A FEW/A LITTLE Time: बिना trick के elimination में 40s → Trick से: 8s (2 questions पूछकर)
patternEITHER-BOTH-ALL: संख्या देखो

Blank से पहले हमेशा देखो — कितनी चीज़ें/sides/options हैं?

  • 2 चीज़ें, एक चुनना है → EITHER
  • 2 चीज़ें, दोनों चुननी हैं → BOTH
  • 3+ चीज़ें → ALL "Street has two sides, parking allowed" — 2 sides में से एक → EITHER Standard method: सभी options try करना 35s → Number counting: 6s
patternENTER INTO — Formal Agreement का Signal

जब भी ये nouns दिखें: agreement, contract, partnership, negotiation, treaty → Preposition हमेशा INTO होगा "Enter into an agreement / contract / treaty" — यह fixed collocation है, इसमें कोई तर्क नहीं। "Enter in" या "Enter at" — दोनों गलत हैं। Standard method: सोचना 25s → Recognition: 4s

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा हॉल में preposition/determiner का blank दिखे तो यह क्रम अपनाओ:

Step 1 — Fixed Collocation जाँचो (5 seconds) क्या blank के आस-पास कोई जाना-पहचाना word-pair है? जैसे Internet → on, agreement → into, enter into, result in/from। अगर हाँ — सीधे उत्तर दो।

Step 2 — Noun Type जाँचो (5 seconds) Blank के बाद की संज्ञा countable है या uncountable? यह determiner questions के लिए critical है। Time, water, advice, information → uncountable → few/many बाहर।

Step 3 — वाक्य का भाव जाँचो (5 seconds) Negative sentence है? → any चुनो (not some)। Positive/affirmative, singular noun? → any (meaning: every one)। Individual instances पर emphasis? → each (not every/all)।

Step 4 — संख्या जाँचो (3 seconds) दो options हैं, एक चुनना है → either। दो, दोनों → both। तीन+ → all।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Internet" digital माध्यम है → MEDIA Trick से → on the Internet। In या at के साथ Internet नहीं आता।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
The information is available _______ the Internet.
  1. with
  2. on
  3. in
  4. at
Solutionसमाधान
The standard English preposition used with 'Internet' is 'on'. We say 'on the Internet' to indicate that information is available through this medium. This is a fixed prepositional usage in English. Therefore, 'on' is the correct preposition.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Negative sentence में determiner — any बनाम some बनाम much का confusion।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Don't want" → negative sentence → negative में some की जगह any आता है। "Don't want any more" एक fixed construction है। Much और many "more" के साथ इस structure में नहीं आते।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
I don't want _______ more vegetables.
  1. one
  2. much
  3. many
  4. any
Solutionसमाधान
In negative sentences, 'any' is used with both countable and uncountable nouns to express 'none' or 'not even a small quantity'. The phrase 'don't want any more' is a common construction meaning the speaker wants no additional quantity. 'Much' and 'many' don't fit naturally with 'more' in this construction. Therefore, 'any' is the correct determiner.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Beside बनाम besides — CDS में सबसे ज़्यादा repeat होने वाला preposition trap।

समाधान का रास्ता: "What other sport" — "अन्य" खेल पूछा जा रहा है, यानी hockey के अलावा। "के अलावा" = besides (addition)। Beside = बगल में (physical) — यहाँ fit नहीं होता।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
What other sport do you play _______ hockey?
  1. beside
  2. besides
  3. instead
  4. expect
Solutionसमाधान
'Besides' means 'in addition to' or 'apart from', which fits the context of asking what other sport is played in addition to hockey. 'Beside' means 'next to' (physical location), which doesn't fit. 'Instead' would require 'instead of'. 'Expect' is unrelated. Therefore, 'besides' is the correct preposition.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Each बनाम every बनाम all — individual instances का emphasis।

समाधान का रास्ता: "दो-तीन बार call किया" → individual instances → each time (हर बार अलग-अलग)। Every time भी grammatically possible है, लेकिन each इस context में individual attempts को ज़्यादा precisely express करता है। All time ungrammatical है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
I called the office two or three times, but _______ time no one responded.
  1. all
  2. some
  3. any
  4. each
Solutionसमाधान
'Each' is used to refer to every individual member of a group considered separately. The sentence indicates that on every single occasion of calling, no one responded. 'Each time' emphasizes the individual instances of calling. 'All time' is ungrammatical here, 'some time' would not fit the negative context, and 'any time' doesn't fit the structure. Therefore, 'each' is the correct determiner.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Either बनाम both — दो का अंतर जो CDS में बार-बार आता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Street की दो sides हैं → 2 options में से कोई एक चुन सकते हो → eitherBoth होता तो "both sides" (plural) होता। All तीन+ के लिए।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
You can park on _______ side of the street.
  1. all
  2. no
  3. either
  4. both
Solutionसमाधान
A street has two sides, so 'either' (meaning one or the other of two) is the appropriate determiner indicating that parking is allowed on one of the two sides - the choice being open. 'Both' would require plural 'sides'. 'All' is for three or more. 'No' would convey a different meaning (prohibition). Therefore, 'either' is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Few बनाम little — uncountable noun के साथ सबसे common गलती।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Time" = uncountable noun → few/a few बाहर → little या a little। Dr. Kumar "बहुत busy" है → time बहुत कम है (नकारात्मक भाव) → little (न कि a little जो positive होता)।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Dr. Kumar is very busy with her practice. She has _______ time for other things.
  1. few
  2. a few
  3. little
  4. a little
Solutionसमाधान
'Time' is an uncountable noun, so we use 'little' or 'a little' (not 'few' or 'a few'). 'Little' has a negative meaning (hardly any/almost none), while 'a little' has a positive meaning (some). Since Dr. Kumar is very busy, she has hardly any time for other things - the negative meaning fits. Therefore, 'little' is the correct determiner.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Affirmative sentence में any का singular countable noun के साथ प्रयोग — यह advance usage है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Any student" → singular noun → affirmative sentence में any + singular = "कोई भी, हर एक।" All/Some/Few के लिए "students" (plural) चाहिए। यहाँ "student" singular है → केवल Any fit होता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
_______ student could tell you where the college library is located.
  1. All
  2. Some
  3. Few
  4. Any
Solutionसमाधान
'Any' with a singular countable noun in an affirmative sentence means 'every one without exception' - it doesn't matter which one. The sentence implies that any random student would know the library's location. 'All', 'Some', and 'Few' require plural nouns ('students'), but the noun here is singular ('student'). Therefore, 'Any' is the correct determiner.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Enter into" collocation — formal/legal language में fixed preposition।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Agreement" के साथ "enter" आया है → fixed collocation: enter into an agreementEnter in और enter at idiomatic नहीं हैं। Unto archaic और inappropriate है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
The two groups entered _______ an agreement after a protracted discussion.
  1. unto
  2. at
  3. in
  4. into
Solutionसमाधान
The phrase 'enter into an agreement' is the standard collocation in English, meaning to formally make an agreement. 'Into' indicates the formal undertaking of the agreement. 'Enter in' or 'enter at' are not idiomatic, and 'unto' is archaic and inappropriate here. Therefore, 'into' is the correct preposition.
