CDS में यह topic इसलिए महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि यहाँ वही गलतियाँ बार-बार आती हैं जो educated speakers भी करते हैं — "cope up with", "adapt with", "If I would have known" जैसी।

Subject-Verb Agreement के मूल नियम

नियम 1: "And" से जुड़े कर्ता

जब दो कर्ता "and" से जुड़े हों, तो क्रिया बहुवचन होती है।

अपवाद: जब "and" से जुड़े दोनों शब्द एक ही व्यक्ति/वस्तु को दर्शाएँ — "The director and producer is here." (एक ही व्यक्ति दोनों भूमिकाओं में)

नियम 2: "Each" और "Every" के साथ

"Each", "every", "each one of", "either", "neither" — ये सभी एकवचन कर्ता हैं, इनके साथ एकवचन क्रिया आती है।

नियम 3: Neither...nor / Either...or का Proximity Rule

इन correlative conjunctions में क्रिया उस कर्ता से मेलखाती है जो क्रिया के अधिक निकट हो।

यह proximity rule CDS में बहुत बार आता है। इसे ठीक से याद करो।

Tense का सही प्रयोग

Present vs. Past की स्पष्टता

जब वाक्य में स्पष्ट रूप से अतीत का संदर्भ हो — कोई time marker या contextual clue — तो Simple Past या Past Perfect का प्रयोग होता है।

Preposition और Phrasal Verbs

यह वह क्षेत्र है जहाँ CDS में सबसे ज़्यादा traps होते हैं। कुछ fixed combinations याद कर लो:

| गलत प्रयोग | सही प्रयोग | नोट | |---|---|---| | cope up with | cope with | "up" अनावश्यक है | | adapt with | adapt to | नई चीज़ के "to" adapt करते हैं | | assemble at the ground | assemble in the ground | enclosed space → "in" | | differ with | differ from | तुलना में "from" | | superior than | superior to | comparative adjective → "to" |

"Assemble in" vs. "Assemble at" का फर्क: जब किसी enclosed या defined space के भीतर एकत्रित होना हो — "in the parade ground", "in the hall" — तो "in" सही है। "At" तब आता है जब location एक point हो — "at the gate", "at the entrance"।

Conditional Sentences की संरचना

CDS में Third Conditional सबसे ज़्यादा गलत होता है।

| Type | If-clause | Main clause | |---|---|---| | First | Simple Present | will + base verb | | Second | Simple Past | would + base verb | | Third | Past Perfect | would have + past participle |

Third Conditional

"assemble in the parade ground" — यह सही है क्योंकि parade ground एक enclosed, defined space है।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternAND देखो — क्रिया बदलो

जब भी underlined part में singular verb हो और subject में "and" दिखे, तो पहले जाँचो कि क्या दोनों subjects अलग-अलग हैं। अगर हाँ, तो plural verb चाहिए।

उदाहरण: "Courage and dedication has been recognized" → दोनों अलग-अलग qualities हैं → "have been recognized"

Standard method: पूरी sentence पढ़ो, grammatically analyze करो — 40 seconds। Shortcut: "and" देखते ही subject count करो, plural subject → plural verb — 10 seconds।

patternNeither-Nor का Proximity Test

"Neither...nor" / "Either...or" देखते ही सीधे "nor/or" के बाद वाले noun को देखो। वही noun क्रिया तय करेगा।

उदाहरण: "Neither students nor the teacher..." → teacher एकवचन → "was"

"nor/or के बाद वाला noun = verb का मालिक" — यह एक line याद करो। Standard method: दोनों nouns को individually check करो — 35 seconds। Shortcut: सीधे "nor/or के बाद" देखो — 8 seconds।

eliminationIf-clause में Would की जाँच

जब भी if-clause में "would have" दिखे — वह हमेशा गलत है। बिना सोचे उस विकल्प को eliminate करो जो if-clause में "would" रखे।

"If I would have known" → गलत → सीधे "If I had known" की तलाश करो।

यह rule बिना exception का है। इसे पहचानने में 5 seconds से अधिक नहीं लगने चाहिए। Standard method: सभी conditionals याद करके match करो — 45 seconds। Shortcut: if-clause में "would" = eliminate — 5 seconds।

eliminationPreposition Trap: UP हटाओ

"cope up with", "meet up with" (अनौपचारिक संदर्भ में), "finish up" — इनमें "up" अनावश्यक है। Standard English में "cope with" ही सही है।

जब भी phrasal verb में extra "up" दिखे और वह grammatically unnecessary लगे, उसे हटाने वाला विकल्प सही होगा।

"cope up with the demands" → "up" हटाओ → "cope with the demands" Step saving: "up" देखते ही red flag — 3 steps बचते हैं।

patternADAPT और ADJUST का Preposition

"Adapt", "adjust", "accustom", "reconcile" — ये सभी नई situation के to होते हैं। "Adapt to", "adjust to", "accustomed to" — यह pattern fixed है।

"adapt with" देखते ही उसे गलत mark करो।

इन चारों verbs को एक group में याद करो: AAAR + to (Adapt, Adjust, Accustom, Reconcile)। Standard method: हर verb का preposition अलग-अलग याद करो — difficult। Shortcut: AAAR + to — एक बार याद, हमेशा सही।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा में वाक्य सुधार का प्रश्न देखते ही यह क्रम अपनाओ:

Step 1 — Underlined part को scan करो (5 sec) क्या वहाँ verb है? Preposition है? Conjunction है?

Step 2 — Quick trigger check (10 sec)

समाधान का रास्ता: "Courage" और "dedication" — दोनों अलग-अलग qualities हैं, "and" से जुड़ी हैं → compound subject → plural verb "have been recognized" सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The officer's courage and dedication has been recognized by his superiors multiple times.
  1. has been recognized
  2. have been recognized
  3. had been recognized
  4. No improvement
Solutionसमाधान
When two subjects are joined by 'and', they form a compound subject requiring a plural verb. Therefore, 'have been recognized' is correct.
जब दो कर्ता 'and' से जुड़े होते हैं, तो वे एक संयुक्त कर्ता बनाते हैं जिसके लिए बहुवचन क्रिया की आवश्यकता होती है। इसलिए 'have been recognized' सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "No improvement" को confidently चुनना — यह skill equally important है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "assemble in the parade ground" — parade ground एक enclosed, bounded space है → "in" सही preposition है। विकल्पों में "at" और "on" दोनों गलत हैं। Original सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The cadets were asked to assemble in the parade ground before the break of dawn.
  1. assemble in
  2. assemble at
  3. assemble on
  4. No improvement
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence is correct as it stands. 'Assemble in the parade ground' is the appropriate usage when referring to gathering within the boundaries of a specific location.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The training program was so rigorous that many recruits found it difficult to cope up with the demands.
  1. cope up with
  2. cope with
  3. cope up to
  4. No improvement
Solutionसमाधान
The correct phrasal verb is 'cope with', not 'cope up with'. The preposition 'up' is unnecessary and makes the expression incorrect.
सही phrasal verb 'cope with' है, 'cope up with' नहीं। यहाँ 'up' preposition अनावश्यक है और अभिव्यक्ति को गलत बनाता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Preposition की गलती — "adapt with" vs. "adapt to" — यह fixed collocation है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Adapt" हमेशा "to" के साथ आता है। नई परिस्थिति के "to" adapt करते हैं, "with" नहीं। → "adapt themselves to" सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The new recruits were advised to adapt themselves with the military lifestyle as quickly as possible.
  1. adapt themselves with
  2. adapt themselves to
  3. adapt with
  4. No improvement
Solutionसमाधान
The correct preposition with 'adapt' is 'to', not 'with'. We adapt ourselves 'to' new situations or environments.
'adapt' के साथ सही preposition 'to' है, 'with' नहीं। हम नई परिस्थितियों या वातावरण के 'to' adapt करते हैं।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Tense का सही चुनाव — contextual clue से काल तय करना।

समाधान का रास्ता: "precede its establishment by several decades" — यह अतीत की घटना है (reputation अकादमी की स्थापना से पहले थी)। Present tense "precede" गलत है → Past Simple "preceded" सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The academy's reputation for producing excellent officers precede its establishment by several decades.
  1. precede
  2. precedes
  3. preceded
  4. No improvement
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence discusses something that happened in the past (the reputation existed before the establishment), so the past tense 'preceded' is appropriate.
वाक्य में अतीत में हुई किसी बात की चर्चा है (प्रतिष्ठा स्थापना से पहले थी), इसलिए भूतकाल 'preceded' उचित है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Each one of them" के साथ singular verb — "were" vs. "was" का यह trap CDS में repeated pattern है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Each one" एकवचन distributor है → एकवचन क्रिया चाहिए। Past tense context में "was standing" सही है, "were standing" नहीं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Identify the best improvement for the underlined part: The parade ground was filled with cadets, each one of them were standing at attention.
  1. each one of them have been standing at attention
  2. each one of them are standing at attention
  3. each one of them was standing at attention
  4. each one of them had been standing at attention
Solutionसमाधान
'Each one' is singular and requires the singular verb 'was', not 'were'. The phrase refers to individual consideration of the cadets, making singular agreement necessary.
'Each one' एकवचन है और एकवचन क्रिया 'was' चाहिए, 'were' नहीं। यह वाक्यांश कैडेटों के व्यक्तिगत विचार को संदर्भित करता है, जिससे एकवचन मेल आवश्यक हो जाता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Neither...nor का Proximity Rule — यह CDS का classic trap है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Neither students nor the teacher..." → "nor" के बाद "teacher" आता है, जो एकवचन है → क्रिया "was" होनी चाहिए, "were" नहीं। विकल्प A सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The sentence given below may or may not have an error. Choose the correct alternative: Neither the students nor the teacher were aware of the new policy.
  1. Neither the students nor the teacher was aware of the new policy.
  2. Neither the students nor the teacher had aware of the new policy.
  3. Neither the students nor the teacher are aware of the new policy.
  4. Neither the students nor the teacher have been aware of the new policy.
Solutionसमाधान
In 'neither...nor' constructions, the verb agrees with the noun closer to it. Since 'teacher' is singular, the verb should be 'was' not 'were'. The subject-verb agreement follows the proximity rule.
Neither...nor के निर्माण में क्रिया उस संज्ञा के साथ मेल खाती है जो उसके अधिक पास होती है। चूंकि 'teacher' एकवचन है, इसलिए क्रिया 'was' होनी चाहिए, 'were' नहीं। यह निकटता नियम का पालन करता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Third Conditional में "would have" का if-clause में प्रयोग — CDS में सबसे बड़ा grammar trap।

समाधान का रास्ता: If-clause में "would" कभी नहीं आता। Third Conditional की संरचना है: "If + Past Perfect, would have + V3"। → "If I had known" → विकल्प D सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the correct alternative for the underlined portion: If I would have known about the examination, I would have prepared better.
  1. If I could have known about the examination
  2. If I might have known about the examination
  3. If I should have known about the examination
  4. If I had known about the examination
Solutionसमाधान
In third conditional sentences, the if-clause uses past perfect (had + past participle), not 'would have'. The structure is 'If + past perfect, would have + past participle'.
तीसरी शर्तीय वाक्यों में if-clause में past perfect (had + past participle) का प्रयोग होता है, 'would have' का नहीं। संरचना है 'If + past perfect, would have + past participle'।
