CDS English: भ्रामक शब्द एवं समध्वनि शब्द (Homophones & Confused Words)

intermediate 20 min read

1: Bear / Bare / Bier

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Bear (verb) | सहन करना / झेलना | I cannot bear this noise. | | Bear (noun) | भालू | A bear attacked the camp. | | Bare (adjective) | खाली / अनावृत | The walls were bare. | | Bier (noun) | अर्थी / शव-पालकी | The body lay on a bier. |

परीक्षा में trap यह है कि "bare" और "bear" की आवाज़ एक-जैसी है। जब भी "tolerate" का अर्थ हो — bear लिखो। जब "empty/uncovered" का अर्थ हो — bare लिखो। Bier एकदम अलग context में आता है।

समूह 2: Censor / Censure / Censer

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Censor (verb/noun) | सामग्री की जाँच कर उसे दबाना; वह अधिकारी जो यह काम करे | The film was censored by the board. | | Censure (verb/noun) | कठोर आलोचना / औपचारिक निंदा | The minister faced censure in Parliament. | | Censer (noun) | धूपदानी / लोबान जलाने का पात्र | Incense rose from the golden censer. |

Censor Board — यही सही है। "Censure Board" कोई चीज़ नहीं होती। यह CDS का एक confirmed trap है।

समूह 3: Crops / Corps / Corpse

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Crops (noun) | फ़सल | The crops failed due to drought. | | Corps (noun) | संगठित दल / सैन्य इकाई | The Medical Corps was deployed. | | Corpse (noun) | शव / मृत शरीर | The corpse was identified at the morgue. |

उच्चारण में subtle फ़र्क है: Corps में "p" और "s" दोनों silent हैं — उच्चारण होता है /kɔːr/। Corpse का उच्चारण /kɔːrps/ है। Crops /krɒps/।

समूह 4: Pair / Pear / Pare

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Pair (noun) | जोड़ा / दो समान वस्तुएँ | A pair of scissors. | | Pear (noun) | नाशपाती (फल) | She ate a ripe pear. | | Pare (verb) | छीलना / छाँटना / घटाना | Pare the budget, pare an apple. |

"Pare down" एक idiom है जिसका अर्थ है "कम करना" — CDS ने इसे direct sentence में दिखाया है।

समूह 5: Fate / Fete / Faith

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Fate (noun) | भाग्य / नियति | The fate of the accused depends on the verdict. | | Fete (noun/verb) | उत्सव / समारोह; उत्सव मनाना | The college organised a cultural fete. | | Faith (noun) | विश्वास / आस्था | She has faith in the judicial system. |

यहाँ trap है "fate of the employee" vs "fete of the employee" — जब किसी के भविष्य की बात हो तो हमेशा fate

समूह 6: Tire / Tier / Tyre

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Tire (verb/noun) | थकाना / थक जाना; (American) टायर | Don't tire the horses. | | Tier (noun) | परत / स्तर / श्रेणी | Third tier of the government. | | Tyre (noun) | (British) वाहन का टायर | The front tyre was punctured. |

CDS की परीक्षा British English में होती है, इसलिए वाहन के टायर के लिए Tyre सही है।

समूह 7: Cite / Sight / Site

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Cite (verb) | उद्धृत करना / संदर्भ देना | Always cite your sources. | | Sight (noun/verb) | दृश्य / दर्शन | What a beautiful sight! | | Site (noun) | स्थान / जगह | The construction site was inspected. |

समूह 8: Raze / Raise / Rays

| शब्द | अर्थ | प्रयोग | |------|------|--------| | Raze (verb) | ज़मींदोज़ करना / पूरी तरह तोड़ना | They will raze the old structure. | | Raise (verb/noun) | उठाना / बढ़ाना; वेतन वृद्धि | He asked for a raise. | | Rays (noun) | किरणें | UV rays are harmful. |

"Raze to the ground" — यह एक fixed expression है। जब किसी इमारत को पूरी तरह गिराने की बात हो — raze का प्रयोग होता है, demolish का synonym।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternअर्थ-आधारित anchor word तकनीक

हर confusing homophone के लिए एक "anchor word" ढूँढो जो उसके अर्थ को lock करे।

  • Bare → "bare minimum" = खाली/न्यूनतम → bare = खाली
  • Bear → "bear the burden" = बोझ सहना → bear = सहना
  • Bier → "bier" में "ier" = "hier" (German: यहाँ) → शव यहाँ रखते हैं

Standard method: हर बार नए वाक्य में context पढ़ो → 30 seconds Anchor method: Anchor word से instant identification → 5 seconds

patternCensor-Censure Split Formula

Censor = C +ensor → सामग्री को "sense" करके काटो (suppress content) Censure = Censure में "sure" है → पक्का/formal निंदा करना

Rule: जब कोई body/board/organization हो → Censor Board (हमेशा) जब निंदा/आलोचना का काम हो → Censure

परीक्षा में "censure board" दिखे तो तुरंत गलत mark करो — यह CDS का confirmed trap है। Standard approach: दोनों शब्द अलग याद करो → 2-3 बार confuse होने का chance Pattern approach: "Board = Censor, Criticism = Censure" एक rule → 0 confusion

patternRaze vs Raise: विपरीत दिशा trick

Raise = ऊपर उठाना (↑) Raze = ज़मीन पर गिराना (↓)

दोनों एक-दूसरे के विपरीत हैं। अगर कोई building की बात हो और context "गिराना" हो → raze। अगर salary/hand/level की बात हो → raise

Memory hook: Raze में "z" है जैसे "zero level" — ज़मीन पर मिला देना। Standard: दोनों अलग याद करो → confused in 3 seconds under exam pressure Pattern: Opposite directions trick → 2 seconds

eliminationCite/Site/Sight: Action-Place-View formula

तीनों के लिए एक formula:

  • Cite = Action (कुछ करना: quote करना, संदर्भ देना) → Verb है
  • Site = Place (जगह: construction site, website) → Noun है
  • Sight = View (देखना/दृश्य: sight-seeing, a beautiful sight) → Noun/Verb है

जब भी वाक्य में "verb की ज़रूरत हो और meaning हो 'refer/quote'" → Cite "Location" context → Site "See/visual" context → Sight

Elimination approach: Context देखो → एक option automatically eliminate → 8 seconds बजाय 25 seconds

patternCorps उच्चारण trap से बचाव

Corps का उच्चारण /kɔːr/ है — न /kɔːrps/ न /krɒps/।

याद रखो: Military में Corps हमेशा "core" की तरह बोला जाता है — "Army Corps of Engineers" = Army Core of Engineers (sound-wise)।

Confusion point: लिखावट में "corps" और "corpse" बहुत similar हैं, पर:

  • Corps = जीवित लोगों का समूह (सैन्य दल)
  • Corpse = मृत शरीर

Rule: "e" जोड़ा तो शव बन गया — Corpse (with 'e' at end = end of life)। Standard confusion time: 15 seconds Pattern recognition: Instant

Censor Board / Censure Board, raise/raze in building context, bare/bear in "tolerate" context — ये CDS के confirmed traps हैं।

यह पूरा process 60-75 seconds में complete होना चाहिए।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: crops/corps/corpse तीनों की spelling बहुत मिलती-जुलती है — यह प्रश्न परखता है कि तुम उच्चारण से नहीं, अर्थ से शब्द चुनते हो।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence 1 में GM crops → agricultural context → "crops" सही। Sentence 2 में volunteer corps → organized group context → "corps" सही। Sentence 3 में "sleeping like a corpse" → यह एक idiom है जिसका अर्थ है बिल्कुल निश्चल सोना → "corpse" सही। सभी तीनों वाक्य सही हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
crops, corps, corpse — 1. What are the benefits of growing GM crops? 2. The volunteer corps was organising a blood donation camp. 3. He was sleeping like a corpse. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 2 and 3 only
  2. 2 only
  3. 1 and 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Solutionसमाधान
'Crops' refers to cultivated plants or agricultural produce - correctly used in sentence 1 about GM crops. 'Corps' refers to an organized group of people - correctly used in sentence 2 for a volunteer corps. 'Corpse' refers to a dead body - the idiom 'sleeping like a corpse' (meaning sleeping motionless) is used correctly in sentence 3. All three sentences use the words correctly.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
censer, censor, censure — 1. The news reports have been heavily censored. 2. The censure board must regulate the cinematic content. 3. Incense was wafting out of the censer carried by the priest. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 1 and 2 only
  2. 3 only
  3. 1 and 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Solutionसमाधान
'Censor' means to examine and suppress unacceptable content - correctly used in sentence 1 ('censored' news reports). 'Censure' means strong disapproval or formal reprimand - sentence 2 incorrectly uses 'censure board' when it should be 'censor board' (the body that regulates films). 'Censer' is a container for burning incense - correctly used in sentence 3. Therefore, only sentences 1 and 3 use the words correctly.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Pare down" एक phrasal verb के रूप में आता है जिसे candidates अक्सर "pair" समझ लेते हैं। यह प्रश्न vocabulary depth परखता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence 1 में pair of jeans → जोड़ा → "pair" correct। Sentence 2 में pear custard → फल → "pear" correct। Sentence 3 में pare the novel down → छाँटना/कम करना → "pare" correct। सभी तीनों सही हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
pair, pear, pare — 1. My last pair of jeans don't fit any more. 2. Dessert was a delicious pear custard. 3. They had to pare the novel down to make it into a two-hour film. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 1 and 2 only
  2. 1 only
  3. 2 and 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Solutionसमाधान
'Pair' means two matching items - correctly used in sentence 1 ('pair of jeans'). 'Pear' is a fruit - correctly used in sentence 2 ('pear custard' as dessert). 'Pare' means to trim or reduce - correctly used in sentence 3 ('pare the novel down' meaning to shorten it). All three sentences use the homophones correctly.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: fate/fete/faith में से केवल "faith" सही वाक्य में है — यह 1-only या 3-only answer pattern है जो candidates को surprise करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence 1 में "fete of the employee" → यहाँ destiny चाहिए → "fate" होना चाहिए। Sentence 2 में "fate to felicitate" → यहाँ celebration चाहिए → "fete" होना चाहिए। Sentence 3 में "faith in the fairness" → विश्वास → "faith" correct। केवल sentence 3 सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
fate, fete, faith — 1. The working committee will meet to discuss the fete of the erring employee. 2. The students organized a fate to felicitate the winners. 3. The accused person has lost faith in the fairness of the judgement. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 2 and 3 only
  2. 1 and 3 only
  3. 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Solutionसमाधान
'Fate' means destiny or future outcome - sentence 1 incorrectly uses 'fete' when it should be 'fate' (discussing the future of the employee). 'Fete' means a celebration or festival - sentence 2 incorrectly uses 'fate' when it should be 'fete' (organizing a celebration). 'Faith' means trust or belief - correctly used in sentence 3. Therefore, only sentence 3 uses the word correctly.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: bear/bare/bier में "bier" एक rare word है — candidates इसे गलत मान लेते हैं, पर यही एकमात्र सही वाक्य है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence 1 में "bare the heat" → यहाँ "सहना" चाहिए → "bear" होना चाहिए। Sentence 2 में "walls looked bear" → यहाँ "खाली" चाहिए → "bare" होना चाहिए। Sentence 3 में "body on a bier" → शव-पालकी → "bier" correct। केवल sentence 3 सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
bear, bare, bier — 1. She could not bare the extreme heat of Delhi in the month of May. 2. The walls of the store looked bear after the oil paintings had been sold. 3. The body was placed on a bier before the funeral service. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 2 only
  2. 2 and 3
  3. 1 and 3
  4. 3 only
Solutionसमाधान
'Bear' (verb) means to tolerate - sentence 1 incorrectly uses 'bare' when it should be 'bear' (tolerate the heat). 'Bare' means empty/uncovered - sentence 2 incorrectly uses 'bear' when it should be 'bare' (empty walls). 'Bier' is a stand for a coffin/corpse - correctly used in sentence 3. Therefore, only sentence 3 uses the word correctly.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: tire/tier/tyre में British vs American spelling का सवाल भी आता है — CDS British English follow करती है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence 1 में "tier the new school master" → यहाँ "थकाना" चाहिए → "tire" होना चाहिए। Sentence 2 में "car's tyre" → British English में vehicle tire = "tyre" → correct। Sentence 3 में "third tire of the building" → यहाँ level/floor → "tier" होना चाहिए। केवल sentence 2 सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
tire, tier, tyre — 1. The headmaster appealed to the students not to tier the new school master unnecessarily. 2. Our guest could not visit us yesterday as his car's tyre got damaged. 3. My uncle lives on the third tire of the building. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 3 only
  2. 2 and 3 only
  3. 2 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Solutionसमाधान
'Tire' means to make weary - sentence 1 incorrectly uses 'tier' when it should be 'tire'. 'Tyre' is the rubber covering on a wheel - correctly used in sentence 2. 'Tier' means a level or row - sentence 3 incorrectly uses 'tire' when it should be 'tier' (third tier/level of the building). Therefore, only sentence 2 uses the word correctly.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: raze/raise/rays में sentence 2 का trap यह है कि "raise a building" सुनने में logical लगता है (buildings raise up), पर context में building को गिराना था।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence 1 में "ask for a raze" → salary context → "raise" होना चाहिए। Sentence 2 में "raise the colonial building" → context है कि पुरानी building गिराकर नई बनाओ → यहाँ "raze" होना चाहिए। Sentence 3 में "heat rays from infrared" → किरणें → "rays" correct। केवल sentence 3 सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
raze, raise, rays — 1. It is expected that the young executives will ask for a raze pretty soon. 2. The plan proposes to raise the colonial building and construct a new memorial. 3. The heat rays emanated from the infrared device. In which of the sentences given above has/have the word(s) been used correctly?
  1. 1 and 2 only
  2. 3 only
  3. 2 and 3 only
  4. 1, 2 and 3
Solutionसमाधान
'Raze' means to demolish completely - sentence 1 incorrectly uses 'raze' when it should be 'raise' (asking for a raise/pay increase). 'Raise' means to lift up or increase - sentence 2 incorrectly uses 'raise' when it should be 'raze' (to demolish the colonial building before constructing new). 'Rays' means beams of light/energy - correctly used in sentence 3 (heat rays from the device). Therefore, only sentence 3 uses the word correctly.
