सीधे अर्थ पूछना — "What does 'X' mean?" २. Fill-in-the-blank में सही phrasal verb पूछना — "fall back _____ in times of crisis"

गहन विश्लेषण

वर्गीकरण — मुहावरों को समूहों में सीखो

CDS के स्तर पर मुहावरों को थीम के अनुसार याद करना सबसे efficient तरीका है। नीचे प्रमुख श्रेणियाँ दी गई हैं:

१. शरीर के अंगों से बने मुहावरे (Body Part Idioms)

ये सबसे अधिक पूछे जाते हैं क्योंकि शरीर के अंगों के नाम सुनकर परीक्षार्थी शाब्दिक अर्थ की ओर भटक जाते हैं।

| मुहावरा | सही अर्थ | जाल — गलत सोच | |---|---|---| | Costs an arm and a leg | बहुत महंगा | "शरीर के अंग देने पड़ेंगे" — गलत | | Listen with half an ear | ध्यान से न सुनना | "आधे कान से सुनना" — शाब्दिक गलती | | Live in each other's pockets | हमेशा साथ रहना | "जेब में रहना = पैसे का मामला" — गलत | | Keep an eye on | निगरानी रखना | — | | Turn a blind eye | जानबूझकर नज़रअंदाज़ करना | — | | Pull someone's leg | मज़ाक करना | शाब्दिक अर्थ — गलत | | Get cold feet | हिम्मत खोना, डर जाना | ठंडे पैर — गलत |

२. रंगों से बने मुहावरे (Colour Idioms)

| मुहावरा | सही अर्थ | |---|---| | Once in a blue moon | बहुत कम ही | | Out of the blue | अचानक, बिना किसी चेतावनी के | | Red-handed | रंगे हाथों — अपराध करते हुए पकड़ा जाना | | Green with envy | ईर्ष्या से भरा हुआ | | Black sheep | परिवार/समूह का बदनाम सदस्य | | In the red | कर्ज़ में होना | | Silver lining | बुरी स्थिति में सकारात्मक पहलू |

३. जानवरों से बने मुहावरे (Animal Idioms)

| मुहावरा | सही अर्थ | |---|---| | Let the cat out of the bag | अनजाने में रहस्य उजागर करना | | It's raining cats and dogs | बहुत तेज़ बारिश | | A wolf in sheep's clothing | दुश्मन जो मित्र का दिखावा करे | | Bite the bullet | दर्दनाक स्थिति को साहस से सहना | | Beat around the bush | मुद्दे पर सीधे न आना | | Kill two birds with one stone | एक काम से दो उद्देश्य पूरे करना |

४. Phrasal Verbs — CDS में Fill-in-the-Blank का मुख्य क्षेत्र

Phrasal verbs में preposition बदलने से अर्थ पूरी तरह बदल जाता है। यह CDS का सबसे सूक्ष्म परीक्षण क्षेत्र है।

"Fall" के साथ:

"Look" के साथ:

"Make" के साथ:

उदाहरण: "Live in each other's pockets" — option में अगर "share money" या "borrow from each other" आए, तो वह distractor है। "Pockets" को पैसे से मत जोड़ो। सही उत्तर हमेशा रिश्ते/व्यवहार की बात करेगा।

मानक approach: 45-60 सेकंड। Elimination से: 15-20 सेकंड — क्योंकि 2-3 options तुरंत हट जाते हैं।

substitutionPhrasal Verb Preposition Test — 'Crisis वाला on'

जब fill-in-the-blank में phrasal verb का preposition पूछा जाए, तो context की दिशा देखो:

  • "निर्भरता/सहारा" → "on" (fall back on, rely on, count on)
  • "वापसी/reversion" → "into" (fall back into old habits)
  • "टकराव" → "with" (fall out with)

वाक्य में "in times of crisis" देखकर तुरंत समझो — यह सहारे की बात है, इसलिए "on"।

मानक approach: 4 options पढ़ो, सोचो — 40 सेकंड। Pattern से: 10 सेकंड।

patternColour-Time Pattern — नीला = दुर्लभ, लाल = खतरा/कर्ज़

रंग-मुहावरों में एक स्थायी pattern है:

  • Blue → दुर्लभता या अप्रत्याशितता: "once in a blue moon" (कम), "out of the blue" (अचानक)
  • Red → खतरा, कर्ज़ या अपराध: "in the red" (कर्ज़), "red-handed" (पकड़ा गया), "see red" (गुस्सा)
  • Green → ईर्ष्या या अनुभवहीनता: "green with envy", "green behind the ears"
  • Black → नकारात्मकता: "black sheep", "blacklist", "in the black" (फायदे में — अपवाद, याद रखो)

यह pattern 8-10 colour idioms को 3 rules में compress कर देता है। अलग-अलग रटने की बजाय रंग देखकर category activate करो।

patternGreek/Foreign = समझ नहीं आया — Cultural Logic

"It's all Greek to me", "It's double Dutch to me", "It's Chinese to me" — ये सब एक ही category के मुहावरे हैं जिनका अर्थ है: "यह मुझे बिल्कुल समझ नहीं आता।"

जब भी किसी विदेशी भाषा का नाम मुहावरे में आए और context अस्पष्टता का हो, तो सही अर्थ होगा — "incomprehensible / completely unclear."

इस एक rule से 3-4 variant idioms एक साथ हल होते हैं। Standard रटने में 3 entries, pattern से: 1 rule।

elimination'More than meets the eye' — Hidden Depth Pattern

जब मुहावरे में "beyond", "beneath", "more than", "hidden", "disguised" जैसे शब्द हों, तो सही option वह होगा जो surface appearance और actual reality के बीच के अंतर को दर्शाए।

"More than meets the eye" में — "meets the eye" = जो दिखता है। "More than" = उससे अधिक। इसलिए: hidden depth/significance।

Options में से "obvious meaning" या "face value" वाला option तुरंत eliminate हो जाता है। बचे हुए में से "hidden significance" वाला चुनो।

Step count: Standard 4-step analysis → 2-step elimination।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा हॉल में मुहावरे का प्रश्न देखते ही यह sequence follow करो:

Step 1 — शाब्दिक अर्थ trap identify करो। क्या कोई option शब्दों का literal meaning दे रहा है? अगर हाँ — उसे तुरंत eliminate करो।

Step 2 — Category देखो। Body part? → रिश्ते/व्यवहार की बात होगी। Colour? → ऊपर दिया pattern apply करो। Animal? → अक्सर deception, secrecy या effort से जुड़ा होगा। Foreign language/country? → Incomprehension।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Live in each other's pockets
  1. To have a lot of money that is shared with others
  2. To exchange wealth readily with each other
  3. To live by borrowing from each other
  4. To spend too much time together
Solutionसमाधान
'Living in each other's pockets' is an idiom meaning to spend a great deal of time together, often to the point of being inseparable. Option (d) correctly captures this meaning. Despite the word 'pockets', it is not about money.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Meets the eye" = surface appearance। "More than" = beyond that। CDS चाहता है कि तुम literal और figurative meaning में फ़र्क करो।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Obvious" या "visible" वाले options eliminate। "Hidden complexity" या "disguised significance" की तलाश करो।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
More than meets the eye
  1. A pleasant feast for the eyes beyond one's imagination
  2. A beautiful spectacle unfolding before one's eyes
  3. The disguised significance of something beyond the obvious
  4. A pair of beautiful eyes
Solutionसमाधान
'More than meets the eye' means that something has more significance, complexity, or hidden aspects than is immediately apparent on the surface. Option (c) — the disguised significance of something beyond the obvious — correctly captures this idiom.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Foreign language = incomprehension — यह pattern CDS में बार-बार आता है। "Greek" का literal sense (Greek language/culture) distractor है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Greek culture" या "ancient language" से जुड़े options तुरंत eliminate। "Incomprehensible / can't understand" की तलाश करो।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
It's all Greek to me
  1. It is foreign to me
  2. It appears classical to me
  3. I can't understand it at all
  4. It's frustrating because it is unfamiliar
Solutionसमाधान
'It's all Greek to me' is an idiom meaning that something is incomprehensible or impossible to understand — typically used for complex jargon, technical language, or unfamiliar concepts. Option (c) — I can't understand it at all — most accurately captures the meaning.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Phrasal verb का preposition fill-in-the-blank — CDS 2025 में सीधे पूछा गया। "Crisis में सहारा लेना" context बताता है कि preposition क्या होगा।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Fall back on" = rely on = निर्भर होना। "Fall back into" = revert to = वापस लौटना। Context "crisis में सहारे" की बात कर रहा है, इसलिए "on" सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
All human beings ought to have a moral centre to fall back __________ in times of crisis.
  1. on
  2. into
  3. over
  4. along
Solutionसमाधान
The phrasal verb 'fall back on' means to resort to or rely upon something when other resources fail. The idiom 'fall back on (something) in times of crisis' is standard English usage. 'Fall back into' suggests reversion, 'fall back over' is not idiomatic, and 'fall back along' is incorrect. Therefore, 'on' is the correct preposition completing the phrasal verb 'fall back on'.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Half an ear" — शाब्दिक अर्थ का classic जाल। CDS इसी तरह body parts को मुहावरों में twist करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Half" = incomplete/partial। "Ear" = listening। इसलिए: partial listening = full attention नहीं देना।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Listen with half an ear
  1. Not pay full attention
  2. Being impartial
  3. Being imperious
  4. Listening with ironic distaste
Solutionसमाधान
The idiom 'listen with half an ear' means to listen without paying full attention or to listen distractedly. It implies that the listener is only partially engaged in what is being said, often because they are doing something else or are uninterested. The other options do not capture this meaning of partial attention. Therefore, 'Not pay full attention' is the correct meaning.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Arm and a leg" — शरीर के अंग + money का combination। यह classic body part idiom है जो सीधे cost/expense से जुड़ा है — लेकिन physical danger से नहीं।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Physical danger" और "physical effort" वाले options eliminate — ये body parts का literal sense हैं। "बहुत महंगा" सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
What does the idiom 'costs an arm and a leg' mean?
'Costs an arm and a leg' मुहावरे का क्या अर्थ है?
  1. Physically dangerous
  2. Very expensive
  3. Extremely difficult to do
  4. Requiring great physical effort
  1. शारीरिक रूप से खतरनाक
  2. बहुत महंगा
  3. करने में बेहद कठिन
  4. बहुत शारीरिक प्रयास की आवश्यकता
Solutionसमाधान
'Costs an arm and a leg' is an idiom used to describe something that is very expensive or costs a lot of money. It does not have any literal meaning related to body parts.
'Costs an arm and a leg'

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Choose the correct meaning of 'once in a blue moon':
'Once in a blue moon' का सही अर्थ चुनिए:

  2. During a special occasion
  3. At midnight
  4. Very frequently
  1. बहुत कम ही
  2. किसी खास अवसर पर
  3. आधी रात को
  4. बहुत बार
Solutionसमाधान

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Animal idiom — "cat out of bag" एक बेहद popular idiom है जो CDS में कई बार आया है। "Spill the beans" इसका near-synonym है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Cat" animal = deception/secrecy category। "Bag से बाहर आना" = जो छुपा था वह प्रकट होना। "अनजाने में रहस्य उजागर करना" सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The phrase 'to let the cat out of the bag' means:
