CDS English: शब्द अर्थ एवं प्रयोग — Confusables, Word Pairs और Match-the-Column

intermediate 22 min read

  1. Root-based memory — जड़ पहचानो, अर्थ अपने-आप निकलेगा।
  2. Pair-wise contrast — हर शब्द को अकेले नहीं, उसके जुड़वाँ के साथ सीखो।
  3. Grammatical category awarenessConscious adjective है, Conscience noun है। यह फ़र्क अक्सर answer eliminate करने में काम आता है।

CDS में यह section उन अभ्यर्थियों को reward करता है जो English को pattern की भाषा की तरह पढ़ते हैं — न कि dictionary की तरह।

गहन विश्लेषण

Confusable Word Pairs: तीन श्रेणियाँ

CDS के PYQs देखो तो confusables तीन श्रेणियों में आते हैं:

श्रेणी 1: Spelling Near-Twins (एक-दो अक्षर का फ़र्क)

| Word 1 | Word 2 | Trap | |--------|--------|------| | Imminent (impending) | Eminent (distinguished) | Im- vs Em- | | Climatic (climate-related) | Climactic (relating to climax) | -tic vs -ctic | | Incredible (hard to believe — thing) | Incredulous (unwilling to believe — person) | -ble vs -lous |

इन्हें याद करने का तरीका: suffix पर ध्यान दो।

श्रेणी 2: Noun vs Adjective Confusion

Conscious और Conscience का जोड़ा यहाँ आता है।

Test: sentence में अगर verb "is/am/are/was" के बाद आए → adjective चाहिए → Conscious। अगर possessive "my/his/her" के बाद आए → noun चाहिए → Conscience।

श्रेणी 3: Greek/Latin Root Groups (Match-the-Column)

यह CDS का सबसे sophisticated vocabulary format है। चार-पाँच शब्द एक common root share करते हैं। पिछले PYQs में तीन major groups आए:

Group A: "Fort-" Root Words

| शब्द | Root/Origin | अर्थ | |------|-------------|------| | Fortuitous | Latin fortuitus (chance) | संयोग से होने वाला | | Fortitudinous | Latin fortitudo (strength) | असाधारण साहस दिखाने वाला | | Formidable | Latin formidare (to fear) | भय उत्पन्न करने वाला, दुर्जेय | | Forlorn | Old English forloren (lost) | उदास और एकाकी |

ध्यान दो: Fortuitous का अर्थ है "by chance" — न कि "fortunate"। यह सबसे आम गलती है। Fortuitous meeting भाग्यशाली नहीं, संयोगवश होती है।

Group B: "-logical" Suffix Words

| शब्द | यह किस branch से जुड़ा है | |------|--------------------------| | Tautological | Rhetoric — एक ही बात दोहराना | | Ontological | Philosophy — existence की प्रकृति | | Epistemological | Philosophy — knowledge की theory | | Epidemiological | Medicine — रोगों का वितरण और pattern |

Memory hook: "Epi-demi-ological" → demi → जनता (demos) → जनता में रोग → epidemiology।

Group C: "Epi-" Prefix Words

| शब्द | Part of Speech | अर्थ | |------|---------------|------| | Epitaph | Noun | कब्र पर लिखे शब्द | | Epistle | Noun | औपचारिक पत्र | | Epithet | Noun | चरित्र बताने वाला विशेषण | | Epigram | Noun | चतुराई से कही गई छोटी बात |

Group D: "-plication" Words

| शब्द | Core Meaning | |------|-------------| | Implication | निहितार्थ — जो कहा नहीं गया पर समझा जा सकता है | | Complication | जटिलता — confused situation | | Supplication | विनती — देवता या शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति से प्रार्थना | | Application | आवेदन — formal request |

Match-the-Column के लिए Elimination Strategy

चार options में से एक सही है। अगर तुम्हें सिर्फ दो pairs निश्चित पता हों, बाकी दो automatically confirm हो जाते हैं। इसलिए पहले easiest pair ढूँढो, eliminate करो, फिर बचे हुए में से अगला सबसे आसान।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternSuffix -ous = Person, Suffix -ble = Thing

जब भी Incredible/Incredulous या ऐसे किसी pair में confusion हो, suffix देखो।

-ous → person या उनकी mental state: incredulous (वह person जो believe नहीं करता), jealous, nervous-ble → thing या situation का गुण: incredible (वह situation जो believe करना मुश्किल है), unbelievable, possible

Micro-example: "The story was _____ but the audience was _____." → पहला blank: thing (story) → incredible → दूसरा blank: person (audience) → incredulous

Standard method: दोनों definitions याद करके लगाओ → 30 seconds। इस pattern से: 5 seconds।

eliminationFortuitous ≠ Fortunate: The 'F-Trap' तोड़ो

Fortuitous और Fortunate दोनों 'Fort-' से शुरू होते हैं। CDS examiner इसी पर trap करता है।

Fortuitous = by chance (संयोग से) — lucky हो भी सकता है, नहीं भी। Fortunate = lucky (भाग्यशाली) — हमेशा positive।

Test: क्या "by accident" substitute हो सकता है? → Yes → Fortuitous। Sentence: "Their fortuitous meeting changed everything." → संयोग से मुलाकात।

Standard method: दोनों definitions अलग-अलग याद करो → गड़बड़ी की संभावना। इस substitution test से: एक step में clear।

patternEpi- Group: TAPhE Mnemonics

चार Epi- words को इस order में याद करो: T-A-Ph-ETomb, Adjective, Phrase, Epistle (reverse)।

  • Epi-TAPH → TAPH में "T" → Tombstone → कब्र पर लिखा
  • Epi-THET → THET → "THE Thing describing" → विशेषण/adjective
  • Epi-GRAM → GRAM → gram = लिखा हुआ → witty written phrase
  • EPIST-LE → EPISTLE → "I shall send a letter" → औपचारिक पत्र

Match-the-Column में: पहले Epitaph और Epistle (सबसे आसान) confirm करो → दो options eliminate → Epithet और Epigram में से बचा एक। Standard method: सभी चार अलग याद करो → 4 recall steps। इस mnemonic से: 1 step में sequence याद, बाकी derive।

patternClimatic vs Climactic: Hidden Letter Test

Climatic में 5 letters हैं clima-ticClimactic में 6 letters — एक extra "c" है।

Extra "c" = extra excitement = climax (जो dramatic होता है, उसमें extra punch होता है)। Normal "climatic" = normal climate = कोई extra नहीं।

Micro-example: "The _____ scene of the film" → extra dramatic → extra 'c' → climactic। "The _____ conditions of the region" → normal weather → no extra 'c' → climatic

Standard method: दोनों definitions अलग याद करो। इस visual trick से: spelling से अर्थ derive, 3 seconds।

substitution-plication Words: Action Ladder

चारों -plication words को एक ladder की तरह सोचो — intensity बढ़ती जाती है:

  1. Implication → hint — सबसे passive (कुछ कहा नहीं, समझ लो)
  2. Application → action — formal request (खुद करते हो)
  3. Complication → problem — situation जटिल हो गई
  4. Supplication → prayer/plea — सबसे intense (शक्तिहीन होकर माँगना)

Substitution test: "She fell on her knees and _____ed for mercy." → intense, helpless → Supplication

Standard method: चारों अलग-अलग definitions याद करो → confusion। Ladder image से: एक बार बनी, हमेशा याद।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा में Vocabulary question सामने आने पर यह decision tree follow करो:

Step 1: Question format पहचानो। → Pair दिया है (A vs B)? → Step 2। → Match-the-Column है? → Step 3।

Step 2: Pair question के लिए। → Suffix देखो: -ous (person), -ble (thing), -ic (adjective relating to), -ical (same but broader)। → अगर suffix से clear नहीं: root देखो — किस Latin/Greek word से बना है? → अगर root भी unclear: "by chance" / "by luck" / "deeply sad" — ये simple substitution tests लगाओ। → Part of speech confirm करो: noun चाहिए या adjective? Grammar से एक option eliminate होगा।

Step 3: Match-the-Column के लिए। → सबसे familiar शब्द पहले match करो। → वह match दो options को eliminate कर देगा। → बचे दो में से एक और confirm करो → चौथा automatic। → कभी भी randomly guess मत करो — एक सही pair ढूँढना ही काफ़ी है बाकी का answer निकालने के लिए।

समय: Pair question → 20-30 seconds। Match-the-Column → 45-60 seconds।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Imminent and Eminent
  1. Imminent means immobile and Eminent means extremely large
  2. Imminent means extremely large and Eminent means immobile
  3. Imminent means famous and respected, and Eminent means happening soon
  4. Imminent means happening soon and Eminent means famous and respected
Solutionसमाधान
'Imminent' means about to happen or impending — something that is likely to occur very soon. 'Eminent' means famous, respected, or distinguished within a particular profession or sphere. Therefore, option (d) is correct. Option (c) reverses these meanings.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह -ble vs -lous का trap है। Examiner चाहता है कि तुम Incredible को person पर apply करो — जो गलत है। Suffix rule यहाँ सीधे काम आता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Incredible → -ble → thing/situation → "an incredible story"। Incredulous → -lous → person's state → "an incredulous audience"। Option (b) यही कहता है — सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Incredible and Incredulous
  1. Incredible means impossible to understand something and Incredulous means extremely grateful
  2. Incredible means difficult to believe and Incredulous means not willing to believe something
  3. Incredible means not willing to believe and Incredulous means difficult to believe something
  4. Incredible means extremely grateful and Incredulous means impossible to understand something
Solutionसमाधान
'Incredible' describes something that is so extraordinary or unlikely that it is difficult to believe. 'Incredulous' describes a person who is unwilling or unable to believe something — i.e., showing disbelief. Option (b) correctly distinguishes the two, while option (c) reverses them.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Climatic और Climactic visual twins हैं। Extra "c" वाला trick यहाँ prove होता है। Option (b) meanings reverse करके confusion बढ़ाता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Extra "c" = climax = dramatic। Climatic = climate। Option (a): "Climatic = climate-related, Climactic = most exciting part" — सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Climatic and Climactic
  1. Climatic means related to climate and Climactic means the most exciting part of a story or situation
  2. Climatic means the most exciting part of a story or situation and Climactic means related to climate
  3. Climatic means scientific study of climate and Climactic means climbing to the top of something
  4. Climatic means climbing to the top of something and Climactic means the scientific study of climate
Solutionसमाधान
'Climatic' relates to climate — the weather conditions of a region. 'Climactic' relates to a climax — the most exciting, important, or intense point in a story, event, or situation. Option (a) correctly defines both, while option (b) reverses them.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Conscious adjective है, Conscience noun है — यह grammatical category trap है। Correct answer option (c) में है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "My _____ is clear" → possessive → noun चाहिए → Conscience। "Are you _____ of the risk?" → adjective चाहिए → Conscious। Option (c) यही definition देता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Conscious and Conscience
  1. Conscious means brightness and Conscience means social awareness
  2. Conscious means awareness and Conscience means being spiritually aware
  3. Conscious means being able to perceive and Conscience means inner sense of right and wrong
  4. Conscious means clarity of purpose and Conscience means perception
Solutionसमाधान
'Conscious' is an adjective meaning awake and aware of one's surroundings — being able to perceive and respond. 'Conscience' is a noun meaning a person's inner moral sense that guides them in distinguishing right from wrong. Option (c) accurately defines both terms.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Fort- group का match question — यहाँ Fortuitous vs Fortunate का classic trap है। अगर तुम Fortuitous को "lucky" समझो, A-4 miss हो जाएगा।

समाधान का रास्ता: Forlorn सबसे आसान — "sad and solitary" = D-3। Formidable = "daunting" = C-2। अब A और B बचे। Fortitudinous में "fortitude" = courage है → B-1 (bravery)। तो Fortuitous = A-4 (by chance)। Final: A-4, B-1, C-2, D-3।
