CTET Paper II अंग्रेज़ी व्याकरण: वाक् के भाग (Parts of Speech) — सम्पूर्ण अध्ययन

intermediate 20 min read

अंग्रेज़ी में मुख्यतः आठ Parts of Speech माने जाते हैं: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, और Interjection। आधुनिक व्याकरण Determiner को भी एक स्वतंत्र category मानता है — और CTET के recent PYQs में यह आया है, इसलिए इसे नज़रअंदाज़ मत करो।

गहन विश्लेषण

आठ (+ एक) श्रेणियाँ और उनकी पहचान

1. Noun (संज्ञा) किसी व्यक्ति, स्थान, वस्तु, विचार या भावना का नाम। Test: क्या इसके पहले "a/an/the" लगाया जा सकता है? क्या यह sentence में subject या object की भूमिका निभा रहा है?

2. Pronoun (सर्वनाम) Noun की जगह प्रयुक्त शब्द। Personal (he, she, it), Relative (who, which, that), Demonstrative (this, that, these, those), Interrogative (who, what), Indefinite (each, one)।

3. Verb (क्रिया) क्रिया या अवस्था का बोध कराने वाला शब्द। Action verb (run, write) या Linking verb (is, seem, become)।

4. Adjective (विशेषण) Noun या Pronoun को modify करने वाला शब्द। Test: क्या यह किसी noun के ठीक पहले है या linking verb के बाद?

5. Adverb (क्रियाविशेषण) Verb, Adjective, या दूसरे Adverb को modify करने वाला शब्द। Time, Frequency, Manner, Degree का बोध।

6. Preposition (पूर्वसर्ग) Noun/Pronoun के साथ जुड़कर उसका संबंध बाकी वाक्य से दर्शाता है। Preposition के बाद हमेशा object (noun/pronoun) आता है।

7. Conjunction (संयोजक) दो शब्दों, phrases या clauses को जोड़ने वाला शब्द।

8. Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक) भाव व्यक्त करने वाला शब्द: Oh!, Alas!, Hurrah!

9. Determiner (निर्धारक) — आधुनिक श्रेणी Noun से पहले आकर उसे specific या quantified करता है। Articles (a, an, the), Demonstratives (this, that), Possessives (my, your), Quantifiers (each, every, some, any, few, many)।

बहुरूपिया शब्दों की सूची (CTET में बार-बार आए)

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternFANBOYS से Coordinating Conjunction पकड़ो

Coordinating Conjunctions याद करने का pattern: F-A-N-B-O-Y-S → For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So।

यह test "past", "until", "before", "after", "in", "out" — सब पर काम करता है। 3 steps की जगह 1 step में निर्णय।

eliminationD-P Split — Determiner और Pronoun में फ़र्क

D-P Split नियम: शब्द के बाद Noun है → Determiner; शब्द अकेला (standalone) है → Pronoun। इसे "each", "this", "that", "some", "which" — सब पर apply करो। "each setting" → D (Determiner)। "On the whole that is true" → that अकेला subject है → Pronoun। Standard method (परिभाषाएँ याद करना): 4 steps; D-P Split: 1 step।

patternFrequency/Time Test — Adverb की पहचान

"ever", "often", "always", "never", "sometimes", "seldom" — ये सब Adverbs of Frequency/Time हैं। जब कोई शब्द verb को यह बताए कि कितनी बार या कब — सीधे Adverb लिखो। Adjective से confuse होने की ज़रूरत नहीं: Adjective noun को modify करता है, ये शब्द noun को modify नहीं करते। 2 options eliminate, 1 confirm — 8 सेकंड में।

eliminationRelative Pronoun Test — 'which/who/that' की भूमिका

"which", "who", "that" को देखो और एक सवाल पूछो: क्या यह किसी पिछले noun या idea को refer कर रहा है? → हाँ → Relative Pronoun। क्या यह किसी noun के ठीक पहले बैठा उसे modify कर रहा है? → Determiner/Adjective। "which is why..."

→ Adjective/Determiner। क्या यह verb/adjective/adverb को modify करता है? → Adverb

Step 4 — Replace Test: क्या इसकी जगह कोई noun phrase रखी जा सकती है? → Pronoun (standalone)। क्या यह noun के साथ मिलकर उसे determine करता है? → Determiner

Step 5 — Join Test: क्या यह दो ideas/clauses को जोड़ रहा है? → Conjunction

इस 5-step filter में कोई-न-कोई step answer दे देगा। अगर दो options बचें, तो D-P Split या Object Test दोबारा apply करो।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "past" का बहुरूपी स्वभाव CTET की पसंदीदा trap है। यह समझना कि वाक्य में "past" के बाद object है, Preposition की पहचान का निर्णायक प्रमाण है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "pushing past you" — "past" के बाद "you" (pronoun) object है। Object Test → Preposition। "past" verb "pushing" को modify नहीं कर रहा (adverb नहीं), noun को describe नहीं कर रहा (adjective नहीं)।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Which part of speech is the underlined word in the following sentence? People are pushing past you.
  1. Preposition
  2. Adverb
  3. Adjective
  4. Verb
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'People are pushing past you,' the word 'past' is used as a preposition because it shows the relationship between the action of pushing and the object 'you' — indicating movement beyond or by someone. As a preposition, 'past' takes 'you' as its object. It is not modifying a verb (adverb), describing a noun (adjective), or showing action (verb) here.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "which" को लेकर सबसे बड़ी गलती यह होती है कि इसे conjunction मान लिया जाता है। यह प्रश्न सिखाता है कि relative clause की शुरुआत में आने वाला "which" pronoun है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "which is why I was agreeably surprised" — "which" sentence का subject है, और यह पिछले विचार (idea) को refer कर रहा है। यह किसी noun के साथ नहीं बैठा → Pronoun (Relative Pronoun), Determiner नहीं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Name the part of speech of the underlined word in the following clause. which is why I was agreeably surprised.
  1. Preposition
  2. Adjective
  3. Pronoun
  4. Adverb
Solutionसमाधान
In the clause 'which is why I was agreeably surprised,' the word 'which' is a relative pronoun referring back to the preceding idea (about gifts gathering dust). Relative pronouns introduce relative clauses and refer to antecedents. It is not a preposition (no relationship between nouns), adjective (not describing a noun), or adverb (not modifying a verb). It functions as a pronoun.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "ever" को कुछ students adjective मान लेते हैं। यह प्रश्न adverb की functional पहचान — verb को modify करना — को reinforce करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Did you ever try to find out?" — "ever" verb "try" को modify करता है, यह बताते हुए कि action कब/कितनी बार हुआ। Frequency/Time Test → Adverb।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Which part of speech is the underlined word in the following sentence? Did you ever try to find out?
  1. Adverb
  2. Adjective
  3. Pronoun
  4. Verb
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'Did you ever try to find out?', the word 'ever' modifies the verb 'try' by indicating time/frequency (at any time). Words that modify verbs are adverbs. 'Ever' is a classic adverb of time/frequency, expressing 'at any point in time.' It is not describing a noun (adjective), replacing a noun (pronoun), or showing action (verb).

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "each" को pronoun मान लेना बहुत आम गलती है। यह प्रश्न D-P Split की ज़रूरत को सबसे साफ़ तरीके से दिखाता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "in each setting" — "each" के तुरंत बाद noun "setting" है। D-P Split → Determiner। "each" noun को replace नहीं कर रहा, noun को determine/specify कर रहा है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Which part of speech is the underlined word in the following sentence? The kind of language learnt in each setting differs too.
  1. Pronoun
  2. Determiner
  3. Conjunction
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
The word 'each' in this sentence functions as a determiner because it specifies or determines the noun 'setting' that follows it. Determiners include words like 'each', 'every', 'this', 'that', 'some', 'any', etc. It is not a pronoun (which would replace a noun), nor a conjunction or preposition. Hence option (2), Determiner, is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "until" conjunction और preposition दोनों होता है — यह प्रश्न यह निर्णय noun phrase vs. clause के आधार पर करना सिखाता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "delayed until a quiz" — "until" के बाद "a quiz" (noun phrase) है, clause नहीं। Object Test → Preposition। अगर "until he came back" होता (clause), तब Conjunction होता।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Study the following phrase. Which part of speech is the underlined word? 'but delayed until a quiz …'
  1. Pronoun
  2. Determiner
  3. Conjunction
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
The word 'until' in the phrase 'delayed until a quiz' functions as a preposition because it shows the relationship between 'delayed' and the noun phrase 'a quiz' (indicating time). When 'until' is followed by a noun/noun phrase, it acts as a preposition; when followed by a clause, it acts as a conjunction. Here it is followed by 'a quiz' (a noun phrase), so it is a preposition. Hence option (4) is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "that" demonstrative pronoun के रूप में एक standalone subject की तरह आता है — इसे determiner या conjunction से अलग पहचानना CTET में tested है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "On the whole that is true" — "that" यहाँ sentence का subject है, किसी पूर्व कथन को refer कर रहा है। इसके बाद कोई noun नहीं → Determiner नहीं। दो clauses नहीं जोड़ रहा → Conjunction नहीं। D-P Split → Pronoun (Demonstrative Pronoun)।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Which part of speech is the underlined word in the following sentence? On the whole that is true.
  1. Determiner
  2. Pronoun
  3. Conjunction
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
In the sentence 'On the whole that is true', the word 'that' is used in place of a noun/idea (referring back to a previous statement). It functions as a pronoun (demonstrative pronoun). It does not modify a noun (determiner), nor does it link clauses (conjunction), nor show relation (preposition). Hence option (2), Pronoun, is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "often" एक classic adverb of frequency है — इसे verb के साथ सीधे जोड़ना practice होनी चाहिए।

समाधान का रास्ता: "It is often held that..." — "often" verb "held" को modify करता है, यह बताते हुए कि यह action कितनी बार होता है। Frequency Test → Adverb

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Identify the part of speech of the underlined word in the following sentence. It is often held that as a principle.
  1. Pronoun
  2. Adverb
  3. Adjective
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
The word 'often' describes how frequently something is held — it modifies the verb 'held'. Words that modify verbs (showing how, when, where, how often) are adverbs. 'Often' indicates frequency and is a classic adverb. Hence option (2), Adverb, is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "yet" को adverb और conjunction दोनों माना जाता है — CTET ने sentence-initial "yet" को conjunction के रूप में पूछकर इस ambiguity को test किया है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Yet, we are all making..." — "yet" sentence की शुरुआत में पिछले paragraph की idea के साथ contrast दिखा रहा है। FANBOYS → Y = Yet → Coordinating Conjunction। यहाँ यह किसी verb को modify नहीं कर रहा → Adverb नहीं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Which part of speech is the underlined word in the following sentence? Yet, we are all making a whole range of decisions.
  1. Adverb
  2. Conjunction
  3. Pronoun
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
The word 'Yet' at the beginning of a sentence linking it to the previous idea (creating contrast) functions as a conjunction (specifically, a coordinating/conjunctive adverb used as a conjunction). It connects ideas, showing contrast — similar to 'but' or 'however'. In this contextual use, it serves a conjunctive function. Hence option (2), Conjunction, is correct.
