CTET Paper II — अंग्रेज़ी भाषा शिक्षण विधियाँ (Language Teaching Methods)

intermediate 20 min read

CTET Paper II

(Grammar-Translation Method — GTM)

यह विधि यूरोप में Latin और Greek जैसी शास्त्रीय भाषाओं को पढ़ाने के लिए विकसित हुई थी। इसकी पहचान:

GTM की सीमा: यह विधि भाषा को एक मृत वस्तु की तरह पढ़ाती है। आधुनिक संप्रेषण-कौशल (speaking, listening) इसमें नहीं आते।

२. प्रत्यक्ष विधि (Direct Method)

३. Audio-Lingual Method (ALM) और Structuralism

ALM का आधार है behaviourist psychology (Watson, Skinner) और structural linguistics (Bloomfield)। सिद्धांत: भाषा एक habit है, और habit बनती है repetition से।

Structuralism और ALM में drilling का संबंध अटूट है — CTET में यह सीधा पूछा गया है।

४. Situational Language Teaching (SLT)

यह British approach थी — structures को meaningful situations में present करना। Grammar अभी भी central थी, पर context था। CLT ने इसी को replace किया।

५. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT)

CLT 1970s में SLT की प्रतिक्रिया में उभरी। आधार: Hymes का Communicative Competence का सिद्धांत — भाषा केवल grammatically correct नहीं, बल्कि socially appropriate भी होनी चाहिए।

CLT की पहचान:

६. Community Language Learning (CLL)

Charles Curran द्वारा विकसित। यह humanistic psychology पर आधारित है।

CLL की unique पहचान: यह छात्रों को whole person मानती है — केवल language learner नहीं। उनकी भावनाएँ, रिश्ते, आत्म-सम्मान — सब सीखने का हिस्सा हैं। Teacher एक counselor की भूमिका में होता है।

CTET का प्रश्न यहाँ specific था: "Students are not organisms — which method sees them as whole persons?" — उत्तर CLL।

७. Krashen का Monitor Model

Stephen Krashen के पाँच hypotheses CTET में बार-बार आते हैं। Monitor Hypothesis सबसे ज़्यादा conceptually परखी जाती है:

Monitor Hypothesis कहती है: explicit rules (learning) एक 'editor' की तरह काम करती हैं — केवल तब जब:

  1. समय हो (time available)
  2. रूप पर ध्यान हो (focus on form)
  3. नियम पता हो (rule known)

अनायास बोलते समय ये तीनों शर्तें पूरी नहीं होतीं — इसलिए classroom में grammar सीखने वाला छात्र भी spontaneous speech में गलतियाँ करता है।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternविधि-पहचान का GDACS Formula

हर विधि की एक core identity keyword याद करो:

  • GTM → Grammar + Translation + Classical languages + No pronunciation
  • Direct → Direct in TL + No L1 + Pictures/Gestures
  • ALM → Audio + Lingual + Drilling + Habit formation + Behaviourism
  • CLT → Communicative + Competence + Fluency first + Replaced SLT
  • SLT → Situational + Structures in context + British + Replaced by CLT

जब भी प्रश्न में "drilling" आए → ALM/Structuralism। "No L1" आए → Direct Method। "Classical language" आए → GTM। "Whole person" आए → CLL।

Standard method (याद्दाश्त से खोजना): 40-50 seconds। इस pattern से: 8-10 seconds।

patternCLT vs SLT — replaced का सम्बन्ध

CTET 2018 में directly पूछा: "CLT replaced basically ___?"

याद करो: CLT came After SLT — C-A-S। CLT ने SLT को replace किया, GTM को नहीं, ALM को नहीं।

एक वाक्य में: "Britain में SLT था, फिर CLT आई।" — यह chronological order है।

इस trick के बिना: 30+ seconds confused thinking। इसके साथ: 5 seconds direct recognition।

patternMonitor Hypothesis — तीन शर्तें TFR

Monitor तभी काम करता है जब T-F-R तीनों हों:

  • T → Time (समय हो)
  • F → Focus on Form (रूप पर ध्यान हो)
  • R → Rule known (नियम पता हो)

Spontaneous speaking में T और F दोनों नहीं होते → Monitor काम नहीं करता → Acquired language हावी होती है → Mistakes होती हैं।

इसके बिना explanation लिखने में 60+ seconds। TFR याद हो तो 10 seconds में answer construct हो जाता है।

patternCLL का Whole Person — Humanistic का H

जब भी "whole person", "emotions in learning", "counselor", "humanistic" आए — सीधे CLL।

CLL → Charles Curran → Counselor → Complete/whole person।

तीन C याद रखो — Charles Curran Counselor। Option में CLL देखो, tick करो।

Standard approach (elimination): 4 options check = 45-60 seconds। इस trick से: 10 seconds।

eliminationGTM की दो कमज़ोरियाँ — No SPEAK

GTM में जो नहीं होता: No S-P → No Speaking focus, No Pronunciation।

जब भी प्रश्न में "pronunciation neglected" या "no oral skill" आए → GTM। जब भी "classical language" आए → GTM।

Elimination की ज़रूरत नहीं — सीधे GTM। 3 steps बचते हैं।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा-कक्ष में भाषा-शिक्षण विधि का प्रश्न देखते ही यह decision tree follow करो:

Step 1 — Keyword scan करो:

Step 2 — अगर keyword clear नहीं:

Step 3 — Pronunciation

समाधान का रास्ता: "basically used to teach" — यह origin पूछ रहा है। GTM यूरोप में Latin/Greek के लिए बनी थी। Modern languages के लिए बाद में adapt की गई। → Classical language.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2018
Grammar-translation method is basically used to teach—
  1. grammar
  2. foreign language
  3. rules of any language usage
  4. classical language
Solutionसमाधान
The Grammar-Translation Method originated in Europe for teaching classical languages like Latin and Greek. It focused on translating texts, learning grammar rules deductively, and reading literature in the original language. Though later applied to modern foreign languages, its original and basic purpose was teaching classical languages. Hence (4) classical language is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: GTM की सबसे बड़ी कमज़ोरी — pronunciation का अभाव — directly पूछा गया। यह CLT, ALM से GTM को differentiate करने का सबसे reliable marker है।

समाधान का रास्ता: GTM का goal = reading classical texts + translation। Speaking/pronunciation का कोई role नहीं। No SPEAK rule याद करो → Grammar-Translation.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2018
Little or no attention is given to pronunciation in _____ method.
  1. audio-lingual
  2. grammar-translation
  3. CLT
  4. SLT
Solutionसमाधान
The Grammar-Translation Method focuses on reading, writing, translating texts, and learning grammar rules. It pays little or no attention to pronunciation or oral skills because its goal is reading classical literature and translation, not spoken communication. In contrast, audio-lingual method, CLT (Communicative Language Teaching), and SLT (Situational Language Teaching) all emphasize spoken language and pronunciation. Hence (2) grammar-translation is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Direct Method की core identity — L1 का पूर्ण बहिष्कार। यह CTET में repeatedly आता है क्योंकि यह GTM से सबसे fundamental contrast है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "without using pupil's first language" = L1 का उपयोग नहीं। यह Direct Method की defining characteristic है। Gestures, pictures, realia से meaning → Direct Method.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2018
The method of teaching foreign language without using the pupil's first language is—
  1. direct method
  2. classical method
  3. grammar-translation method
  4. old method
Solutionसमाधान
The Direct Method (also called Natural Method) teaches a foreign language directly in the target language, without any translation to or use of the learner's first language. All instruction, demonstration, and communication happen in the L2 using gestures, pictures, and realia. This contrasts with grammar-translation method which relies heavily on L1. Hence (1) direct method is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: CLT-SLT का chronological और theoretical relationship — यह CTET 2018 में directly पूछा गया था। बहुत से students यहाँ GTM या ALM लिख देते हैं।

समाधान का रास्ता: CLT 1970s में आई। British ELT में SLT dominant था। CLT ने communicative competence को focus में लाकर SLT को replace किया — न कि GTM को (जो तो पहले से out था)। → Situational Language Teaching.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2018
Communicative Language Teaching replaced basically—
  1. Natural Language Processing
  2. Structural Teaching
  3. Situational Language Teaching
  4. Motivational Teaching
Solutionसमाधान
Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) emerged in the 1970s primarily as a reaction against and replacement of Situational Language Teaching (SLT), which was the dominant British approach. SLT focused on structures presented in meaningful situations but was still form-focused. CLT shifted the focus to communicative competence and functional use of language. Hence (3) Situational Language Teaching is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: CLL का humanistic आधार — "whole person" concept। यह CTET में CLL को पहचानने का सबसे reliable trigger है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "not organisms" = humanistic view। Charles Curran की CLL ही वह विधि है जो learners को cognitive + emotional + social being मानती है। Teacher = counselor. → CLL.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2018
Students are not organisms. Which one of the following methods sees them as a whole person?
  1. CLT
  2. SLT
  3. Silent way
  4. CLL
Solutionसमाधान
Community Language Learning (CLL), developed by Charles Curran, applies humanistic psychology to language teaching. It views learners as 'whole persons'—involving their intellect, emotions, relationships, and physical reactions—not just as language-learning organisms. The teacher acts as a counselor and the focus is on the whole-person learning experience. Hence (4) CLL is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Drilling और Structuralism का सम्बन्ध — CTET 2019 में पूछा। यह ALM के साथ confusion पैदा करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Drilling = structural approach की technique। Structuralism linguistic theory है जिस पर ALM आधारित है। प्रश्न में "Structuralism" option है तो वही सही। ALM और Structuralism को synonymous मानो — drilling दोनों की पहचान है। → Structuralism.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2019
Drilling is a teaching-learning technique or a strategy in _____.
  1. Constructivist language teaching
  2. Structuralism
  3. Communicative learning teaching
  4. Lexical approach
Solutionसमाधान
Drilling — repetitive practice of language patterns and structures — is a key technique associated with the Structural approach (Structuralism) and the Audio-Lingual Method. It focuses on habit formation through repetition of grammatical structures. Constructivism, communicative approach, and lexical approach do not emphasize drilling. Hence option (2), Structuralism, is correct.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: ALM का behaviourist आधार — "habit formation through repetition"। यह CTET 2021 का प्रश्न है। यहाँ Constructivism और CLT distractors हैं।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Habit formation through repetition" → behaviourism → ALM। CLT में fluency important है पर habit formation नहीं। Constructivism में meaning-making है। → Audio lingualism.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2021
'Habit formation through repetition' is a component of which method?
  1. Communicative approach
  2. Audio lingualism
  3. Task based language teaching
  4. Constructivism
Solutionसमाधान
Audio-lingualism (or Audiolingual Method) is rooted in behaviourist psychology and structural linguistics, emphasising habit formation through repetitive drills, pattern practice, and mimicry. Language learning is viewed as forming correct habits via stimulus-response-reinforcement. The communicative approach focuses on meaningful communication, TBLT on tasks, and constructivism on meaning-making — none emphasise habit formation through repetition the way audiolingualism does.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Krashen का Monitor Hypothesis — यह सबसे conceptually demanding प्रश्न है। यह directly classroom situation को theory से जोड़ता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: छात्र ने grammar rules explicitly सीखे (= Learning, not Acquisition)। Spontaneous बोलते समय Monitor की तीन शर्तें (Time, Focus on Form, Rule Known) पूरी नहीं होतीं। इसलिए learned rules काम नहीं आते — acquired language ही बोली में आती है। → Monitor Hypothesis.

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
In Krashen's Monitor Model, which hypothesis directly explains why a Class 6 student who has learned grammar rules explicitly still makes errors during spontaneous speech?
Krashen के Monitor Model में कौन-सी परिकल्पना सीधे यह बताती है कि कक्षा 6 का वह छात्र जिसने व्याकरण के नियम स्पष्ट रूप से सीखे हैं, अनायास बोलते समय फिर भी गलतियाँ करता है?
  1. The Natural Order Hypothesis
  2. The Input Hypothesis
  3. The Monitor Hypothesis
  4. The Affective Filter Hypothesis
  1. The Natural Order Hypothesis
  2. The Input Hypothesis
  3. The Monitor Hypothesis
  4. The Affective Filter Hypothesis
Solutionसमाधान
The Monitor Hypothesis states that explicitly learned grammar rules can only be applied as a 'monitor' or editor when the learner has time, focuses on form, and knows the rule. During spontaneous speech these conditions rarely hold, so acquired (not learned) language dominates — explaining why explicit knowledge does not prevent spoken errors.
