NDA English: प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कथन (Direct & Indirect Speech)

intermediate 18 min read

Reporting Verb + "Reported Speech"

जैसे: Ram said, "I am tired."

Indirect Speech में यही बनती है: Reporting Verb + that + Reported Clause

जैसे: Ram said that he was tired.

Tense Backshift के नियम

जब Reporting Verb past tense में हो (said, told, asked), तो Reported Speech का tense एक step पीछे जाता है:

| Direct Speech (Reported Clause) | Indirect Speech | |---|---| | Simple Present → | Simple Past | | Present Continuous → | Past Continuous | | Present Perfect → | Past Perfect | | Simple Past → | Past Perfect | | Past Continuous → | Past Perfect Continuous | | Will → | Would | | Can → | Could | | May → | Might | | Must / Have to → | Had to |

ध्यान रखो: यदि Reporting Verb present या future tense में है (says, will say), तो tense नहीं बदलता। जैसे: He says that he is tired. (कोई backshift नहीं)

Pronoun परिवर्तन

Pronoun बदलाव का सबसे आसान तरीका है — S.O.O. Formula:

सरल भाषा में:

उदाहरण: Sita said to Meera, "I love your work." → Sita told Meera that she loved her work.

Time और Place Expressions

| Direct Speech | Indirect Speech | |---|---| | now | then | | today | that day | | yesterday | the previous day / the day before | | tomorrow | the next day / the following day | | last week | the previous week | | next year | the following year | | here | there | | this | that | | these | those | | ago | before |

Sentence Type के अनुसार Reporting Verb

Assertive Sentences:

Interrogative Sentences:

Imperative Sentences (आदेश/अनुरोध):

Exclamatory Sentences:

Exclamatory Sentences — विशेष ध्यान

NDA 2025 में यही pattern आया था। Exclamatory sentence में:

जैसे: "What a brave soldier he is!" → exclaimed that he was a very brave soldier

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternSTOP Formula — Sentence Type पहचानो

जब कोई Direct-to-Indirect question सामने आए, सबसे पहले Reported Speech के punctuation देखो:

  • ? → Interrogative (if/whether या wh-word)
  • ! → Exclamatory (exclaimed/wondered + statement)
  • Please/Do/Don't → Imperative (requested/ordered + to-infinitive)
  • कोई mark नहीं → Assertive (that + clause)

यह step पहले करो तो reporting verb और conjunction दोनों automatically तय हो जाते हैं। Standard method: पहले rules याद करो, फिर apply करो — 60 seconds। STOP Formula: 10 seconds में sentence type तय, फिर सिर्फ conversion — 25 seconds।

patternTIME SHIFT — 5 pairs याद करो, बाकी भूल जाओ

NDA में सबसे ज़्यादा गड़बड़ी time expressions में होती है। सिर्फ ये 5 pairs रटो:

now→then / today→that day / tomorrow→the next day / yesterday→the previous day / here→there

बाकी सब इन्हीं के variations हैं। "last week" = "the previous week", "next month" = "the following month"। Standard method: पूरी list याद करो (15+ items) — 3 minutes। 5 core pairs से बाकी derive करो — 30 seconds।

eliminationS.O.O. Pronoun Rule — तीन rows, तीन rules

Pronoun confusion खत्म करने का एक ही तरीका है: तीन rows बनाओ।

  • 1st person pronouns (I/we/my/our) → Reporting clause के Subject के gender/number से तय होते हैं
  • 2nd person pronouns (you/your) → Reporting clause के Object के gender/number से तय होते हैं
  • 3rd person pronouns (he/she/they/it) → नहीं बदलते

जब question में "you" दिखे → Object देखो। जब "I" दिखे → Subject देखो। यह rule apply करने पर pronoun error 90% कम हो जाती है। Standard elimination: हर option में pronoun check करो — 40 seconds। S.O.O. direct derive करो — 15 seconds।

substitutionExclamatory का Wonderful Trick

"What a/an + Noun" वाले exclamatory को indirect में बदलने का formula: exclaimed that + Subject + was/were + very + Adjective

"What a beautiful painting" → "it was a very beautiful painting" "How brave he is" → "he was very brave"

बस "What a/an" हटाओ, "very" लगाओ, tense backshift करो। Standard method: structure याद करके apply करो — 45 seconds। Direct substitution — 15 seconds।

patternInterrogative Indirect — Question Word Order हटाओ

Indirect speech में question का word order normal हो जाता है। यह सबसे common गलती है।

Direct: "Where are you going?" गलत Indirect: asked where was I going ✗ सही Indirect: asked where I was going ✓

Rule: Wh-word के बाद Subject + Verb आता है, न कि Verb + Subject। Yes/No questions: "Do you know him?" → asked if I knew him। हर बार "if/whether" check करो — Yes/No question में यह ज़रूरी है। Standard method: confuse होकर options try करो — 50 seconds। Word order rule याद हो तो सीधे लिखो — 20 seconds।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा हॉल में यह decision tree follow करो:

Step 1: Inverted commas के अंदर क्या है? → Sentence type तय करो (STOP Formula)

Step 2: Reporting Verb का tense क्या है?

Step 3: Pronoun बदलो (S.O.O. Rule से)

Step 4: Time/Place expressions बदलो (5 core pairs)

Step 5: Reporting verb

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Convert from direct speech to indirect speech: Charu said to her friend, "I want you to be here at 6.00 p.m. tomorrow for the meeting."
  1. Charu told her friend that she wanted her to be there at 6.00 p.m. the next day for the meeting
  2. Charu told her friend that she wanted her to be there at 6.00 p.m. tomorrow for the meeting
  3. Charu requested her friend that she wanted her to be there at 6.00 p.m. tomorrow for the meeting
  4. Charu told her friend that she will want her to be here at 6.00 p.m. the next day for the meeting
Solutionसमाधान
In converting direct speech to indirect speech, present tense changes to past ('want' becomes 'wanted'), 'here' changes to 'there', and 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day'. The pronoun 'you' becomes 'her' (referring to the friend). Therefore, option (a) correctly applies all these transformations.

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence type — Assertive (statement)। Reporting verb: "said to" → "told"। Tense backshift: "want" → "wanted"। Pronoun: "I" → "she" (Charu = subject, feminine); "you" → "her" (friend = object, feminine)। Place: "here" → "there"। Time: "tomorrow" → "the next day"। Final: Charu told her friend that she wanted her to be there at 6.00 p.m. the next day for the meeting।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: NDA 2025 का यह exclamatory sentence conversion है — जो बहुत से students के लिए सबसे कठिन type है। Reporting verb का चुनाव और structure का transformation — दोनों एक साथ।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Convert from direct speech to indirect speech: Nitin said to his brother, "What a beautiful painting it is?"
  1. Nitin wondered to his brother that what a beautiful painting it was
  2. Nitin wondered before his brother that it was a beautiful painting
  3. Nitin exclaimed that it is a beautiful painting
  4. Nitin asked his brother whether it was beautiful painting
Solutionसमाधान
The original sentence is an exclamatory sentence expressing admiration. In indirect speech, exclamatory sentences are introduced with verbs like 'exclaimed' or 'wondered'. The tense changes from present ('is') to past ('was'), and the exclamatory structure 'What a beautiful painting' is converted into a statement. Option (b) correctly conveys the wonder/admiration that Nitin expressed, with proper tense change.

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence type — Exclamatory ("What a beautiful painting it is?")। यहाँ "?" misleading है — असल में यह wonder/admiration व्यक्त कर रहा है। Reporting verb: "wondered" या "exclaimed" — यहाँ "wondered" सही है। "said to his brother" → "wondered before his brother"। Structure: "What a beautiful painting" → "it was a beautiful painting"। Tense: "is" → "was"। Final: Nitin wondered before his brother that it was a beautiful painting।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह Indirect से Direct में reverse conversion है — NDA में यह type भी आता है। अधिकतर students केवल Direct→Indirect practice करते हैं, इसलिए यह question अलग challenge देता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Convert from indirect speech to direct speech: The teacher asked her students why they had been quiet in the previous class.
  1. The teacher asked her students, "Why were they keeping quiet in the previous class?"
  2. The teacher said to her students, "Why were you quiet in the previous class?"
  3. The teacher said to her students, "Why had you been quiet in the previous class?"
  4. The teacher said to her students, "Why were you quiet in previous class?"
Solutionसमाधान
When converting from indirect to direct speech, the past perfect tense ('had been quiet') becomes past tense ('were quiet'), and the pronoun 'they' becomes 'you' (since the teacher is addressing the students directly). The reporting verb 'asked' changes to 'said to'. Option (b) correctly applies these transformations with proper article usage ('the previous class').

समाधान का रास्ता: Indirect से Direct में rules उल्टे लागू होते हैं। "asked" → "said to" (reporting verb बदलो)। Tense forward shift: "had been quiet" → "were quiet"। Pronoun: "they" → "you" (students को direct address)। "the previous class" → "the previous class" (यहाँ नहीं बदलता क्योंकि यह specific reference है)। Word order: Indirect में normal order था → Direct में question order बनाओ। Final: The teacher said to her students, "Why were you quiet in the previous class?"।
