NDA अंग्रेज़ी: संयोजक शब्द और Discourse Markers — पूर्ण मार्गदर्शिका

intermediate 18 min read

अवधारणा

Discourse markers

जैसे unless, because, when, although, if, until। इनके बिना वाक्य अधूरा रहता है।

दूसरा वर्ग — Discourse Markers (वार्तालाप-चिह्न): ये clause के भीतर grammatically ज़रूरी नहीं होते, पर conversation को structure देते हैं। जैसे by the way, as far as ... is concerned, speaking of, in some cases, excuse me, to begin with।

unless बनाम if not

unless का अर्थ है "यदि नहीं" — यह एक negative condition बनाता है। देखो:

ध्यान रखो: unless के बाद वाले clause में कभी भी not नहीं आता। "Unless he doesn't send" — यह ग़लत है, double negative हो जाता है।

till / until — ये समय बताते हैं: "I waited until he arrived." इनका प्रयोग condition के लिए नहीं होता। "I will not pay until he sends the bill" — यह grammatically चल सकता है पर meaning बदल जाती है: तुम eventually pay करोगे, बस bill आने तक रुके हो।

because बनाम as far as / if

because कारण बताता है (past या present fact के लिए):

if condition बनाता है future के लिए। Past tense के साथ if use करने पर meaning conditional हो जाती है, causal नहीं।

when बनाम where / because / till

when — समय-clause बनाता है: "Stay inside when it starts raining." where — स्थान बताता है। "Stay inside where it is dry" — अलग meaning। till it starts raining — इसका अर्थ होगा: बारिश शुरू होने से पहले तक रहो। यानी बारिश से पहले अंदर, बारिश में बाहर — उलटा logic।

वर्ग २ — Discourse Markers जो conversation को navigate करते हैं

ये markers fixed phrases होते हैं। इनका प्रयोग context देखकर होता है, grammar से नहीं।

| Marker | प्रयोग | Example | |---|---|---| | As far as X is concerned | किसी विशेष विषय को introduce करने के लिए | "As far as your transfer is concerned..." | | By the way | बातचीत में नया, अलग topic जोड़ने के लिए | "By the way, did you know..." | | Speaking of | हाल में उल्लिखित topic को आगे बढ़ाने के लिए | "Speaking of the wind..." | | Excuse me | ध्यान खींचने या mild confrontation के लिए | "Excuse me, what are you doing here?" | | In some cases | statement को qualify करने के लिए | "In some cases, this leads to..." | | To begin with / First of all | किसी list का पहला point introduce करने के लिए | "To begin with, let me explain..." | | On the other hand | contrast दिखाने के लिए | "She is smart; on the other hand..." | | As a result | consequence बताने के लिए | "He studied hard; as a result, he passed." |

As far as X is concerned — ख़ास ध्यान दो

यह एक fixed collocation है। Structure हमेशा यही रहता है:

As far as [noun phrase / pronoun] is concerned, [main clause]

यहाँ is concerned को was concerned या are concerned से बदलना ग़लत है जब तक subject plural न हो। NDA में यही वाक्यांश blank में आता है — बाकी options (To begin with, By the way, Talking about) इस structure के साथ grammatically fit नहीं होते।

Speaking of बनाम By the way

दोनों topic-shift करते हैं, पर तरीक़ा अलग है:

In some cases — qualification marker

यह marker किसी broad claim को limit करता है। "Unhappy childhood leads to crime" — यह absolute statement है। "In some cases, unhappy childhood leads to crime" — यह qualified, nuanced statement है। NDA में formal writing में यह marker बहुत common है।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternUnless = If Not — Double Negative Trap

जब भी unless दिखे, mentally उसे "if not" से replace करो। फिर देखो कि clause में already not तो नहीं है। अगर है — वह option ग़लत है।

उदाहरण: "I will not go unless he doesn't come" — ग़लत, क्योंकि "if not he doesn't come" = double negative। "I will not go unless he comes" — सही।

Standard method: पूरा वाक्य पढ़कर सोचो = 30 सेकंड। यह trick: 8 सेकंड में eliminate करो।

eliminationTime vs Condition Split

till/until = समय (कब तक)। unless = condition (किस शर्त पर नहीं)। when = समय (किस वक़्त)।

Blank के बाद का clause देखो: क्या यह event कब होगा बताता है, या क्यों नहीं होगा?

"I will not pay _____ he sends the bill":

  • "sends the bill" एक condition है, time नहीं — इसलिए unless सही।
  • अगर "I waited _____ he sent the bill" होता — time clause, तो until सही।

इस एक split से 60% sentence-completion conjunctions solve हो जाते हैं। Standard reading = 25 सेकंड। यह split = 10 सेकंड।

eliminationDiscourse Marker Context Test — 3 सवाल

किसी भी discourse marker blank के लिए तीन सवाल पूछो:

  1. क्या नया topic पिछले से connected है? — हाँ → Speaking of; नहीं → By the way
  2. क्या एक specific subject को address किया जा रहा है? — हाँ → As far as X is concerned
  3. क्या बात qualify हो रही है (हमेशा नहीं, कभी-कभी)? — हाँ → In some cases

यह 3-सवाल framework 4-option questions को 15 सेकंड में solve करता है। बिना framework के 40 सेकंड लग सकते हैं।

patternExcuse Me — Attention या Apology?

Excuse me दो तरह से काम करता है: (a) ध्यान खींचने के लिए — confrontation से पहले, (b) माफ़ी माँगने के लिए — किसी के बीच में बोलने पर।

NDA में यह marker तब आता है जब speaker को मिलाकर कोई assertive या surprised question हो। "What are you doing in my room?" — clearly confrontational → Excuse me perfect fit।

On the other hand (contrast), Eventually (time) — ये immediately eliminate हो जाते हैं क्योंकि इनके बाद question mark वाला question नहीं आता। 2 options instant eliminate = 10 सेकंड बचे।

patternAs Far As — Fixed Structure Lock

As far as हमेशा इस structure में आता है: As far as [X] is/are concerned। यह एक locked phrase है — इसे तोड़ा नहीं जाता।

जब blank वाक्य के शुरू में हो और बाद में is concerned आए — सीधे As far as चुनो। बाकी options (To begin with, By the way, Talking about) इस structure के साथ grammatically possible नहीं हैं।

Recognition = 5 सेकंड। यह NDA में repeat pattern है।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

Sentence completion में discourse marker blank मिले तो यह sequence follow करो:

Step 1 — Clause type identify करो (5 सेकंड) Blank के बाद आने वाले clause को देखो। क्या यह time clause है (event कब), condition clause है (किस शर्त पर), reason clause है (क्यों), या topic-shift phrase है?

Step 2 — Elimination (10 सेकंड)

Step 3 — Double-check negative (5 सेकंड) अगर main clause में not है और conjunction unless है — confirm करो कि subordinate clause में not नहीं है।

Step 4 — Fixed phrases lock करो (5 सेकंड) As far as X is concerned — structure देखो। Speaking of — पिछला topic देखो।

कुल समय प्रति प्रश्न: 25 सेकंड। यह target realistic है।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: unless का प्रयोग NDA में बार-बार आता है। यह condition बनाम time का सबसे classic trap है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Main clause में will not pay है — negative future। Blank के बाद he sends the bill — यह एक condition है। unless = "if not" → "I will not pay if he does not send the bill" = सही logic। till/until यहाँ meaning को time-based बना देते हैं जो awkward है। if के साथ doesn't चाहिए था।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
I will not pay for the goods _____
  1. till he sends me the bill again
  2. until he sends me the bill again
  3. if he sends me the bill again
  4. unless he sends me the bill again
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence requires a conditional clause meaning 'if not' or 'except when'. 'Unless' means 'if not' and is the appropriate conjunction here: the speaker will pay only on the condition that the bill is sent again. 'Till' and 'until' indicate time, suggesting the action will happen after the bill is sent (which is logically possible but slightly awkward with 'not pay'). 'If' would require 'doesn't' to convey the conditional negative meaning. 'Unless' captures the intended meaning most precisely.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: because versus if का classic trap — past tense में reason देना है या condition।

समाधान का रास्ता: "I did not buy it" — यह past fact है। Blank में reason चाहिए। because causal relation बनाता है। as far as comparison/topic के लिए है। anyway adverb है, clause नहीं जोड़ सकता। if conditional बनाता है, पर past tense के साथ unreal conditional की ज़रूरत होती — "if I had not liked it" — जो options में नहीं है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
I did not buy it _____
  1. because I did not like the look of it
  2. as far as I did not like the look of it
  3. anyway I did not like the look of it
  4. if I did not like the look of it
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence requires a reason for not buying the item. 'Because' introduces a causal clause, providing the reason for the action. 'As far as' is used for comparisons or extent; 'anyway' is an adverb that doesn't fit grammatically; 'if' would create a conditional that doesn't match the past tense 'did not buy'. Therefore, 'because I did not like the look of it' is the correct completion.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: when, where, because, till — ये चारों confusable हैं। Logic trap पर ध्यान दो।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Stay inside" — यह advice है। Blank में वह time चाहिए जब अंदर रहना है। when it starts raining = बारिश शुरू होने पर अंदर रहो। till it starts raining = बारिश से पहले अंदर रहो (फिर बाहर?) — illogical। where = place, because = reason पर यहाँ future condition है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
You must stay inside _____
  1. where it starts raining
  2. when it starts raining
  3. because it starts raining
  4. till it starts raining
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence requires a time clause indicating when the action of staying inside should occur. 'When it starts raining' provides the condition of time—stay inside at the time rain begins. 'Where' indicates place, not time; 'because' would require the rain to have already started; 'till it starts raining' means before the rain (which is illogical since you'd be inside before rain begins, which doesn't make sense as advice). Therefore, 'when' is the appropriate choice.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: As far as X is concerned — यह fixed phrase NDA 2025 में सीधे परखा गया। Structure पहचानना ज़रूरी है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Blank के बाद your transfer request is concerned आता है — यह As far as ... is concerned structure का हिस्सा है। To begin with के बाद comma आता है, is concerned नहीं। By the way = digression, यहाँ specific topic address हो रहा है। Talking about के बाद is concerned grammatically नहीं बैठता।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
__________ your transfer request is concerned, we'll be discussing it at the next meeting.
  1. As far as
  2. To begin with
  3. By the way
  4. Talking about
Solutionसमाधान
The phrase 'As far as ... is concerned' is a fixed discourse marker used to introduce a specific topic and indicate that the speaker is addressing that particular matter. The structure 'As far as X is concerned' is the standard collocation. 'To begin with' introduces a first point, 'By the way' introduces a side topic, and 'Talking about' would not fit with 'is concerned' construction.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: By the way बनाम Speaking of — दोनों topic-shift करते हैं पर context अलग होता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Did you know Ravi has a new job?" — यह casual, unrelated information है। By the way = unrelated digression के लिए perfect। For one thing = list का पहला point। In the first place = sequence। As a result = consequence — इनमें से कोई casual question से पहले नहीं बैठता।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
__________, did you know Ravi has a new job?
  1. For one thing
  2. By the way
  3. In the first place
  4. As a result
Solutionसमाधान
'By the way' is a discourse marker used to introduce a new topic that is somewhat unrelated to the previous conversation — often used to share interesting incidental information. It fits perfectly with the casual question about Ravi's new job. 'For one thing' introduces the first of several reasons, 'In the first place' is similar to firstly, and 'As a result' indicates consequence — none of which fit this casual digression.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Speaking of का प्रयोग connected topic के लिए — यह NDA 2025 का pattern है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Blank के बाद the wind (noun phrase) है। Speaking of + noun phrase = standard structure। Context में wind का वर्णन जारी है — पिछले topic से directly connected। To begin with / First of all = list शुरू करने के लिए। By the way = unrelated topic के लिए — यहाँ wind connected topic है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
__________ the wind, it was getting stronger, and I was getting colder.
  1. To begin with
  2. By the way
  3. First of all
  4. Speaking of
Solutionसमाधान
'Speaking of' is a discourse marker used to introduce or elaborate on a topic that has just been mentioned. It naturally fits before 'the wind' to introduce wind as the subject of discussion. 'To begin with' and 'First of all' are used to start a list of points, and 'By the way' introduces an unrelated tangent — none of which work syntactically with the noun phrase 'the wind' followed by a continuation of description.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Excuse me — यह attention-getting marker है। Confrontational context पहचानना ज़रूरी है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "What are you doing in my room?" — यह surprised confrontation है। Excuse me = politely/assertively attention खींचना। On the other hand = contrast, यहाँ कोई contrast नहीं। Look there = direction। Eventually = time। तीनों immediately eliminate।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
__________, what are you doing in my room?
  1. On the other hand
  2. Excuse me
  3. Look there
  4. Eventually
Solutionसमाधान
'Excuse me' is a discourse marker used to politely (or assertively) get someone's attention before asking a question, particularly when expressing surprise or mild confrontation. It fits naturally with the question 'what are you doing in my room?' 'On the other hand' presents a contrast, 'Look there' is a direction, and 'Eventually' refers to time — none fit this attention-getting context.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: In some cases — qualification marker। Universal statement को limit करना NDA formal English में आता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Unhappy childhood leads to criminal behaviour" — यह bold, absolute claim है। Blank में qualifier चाहिए। In some cases = "कभी-कभी, कुछ परिस्थितियों में" — perfect qualifier। Still if grammatically ग़लत। Even somewhat awkward collocation। In progression context से बाहर।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
__________ an unhappy childhood leads to criminal behaviour.
  1. Still if
  2. Even somewhat
  3. In some cases
  4. In progression
Solutionसमाधान
'In some cases' is a discourse marker used to qualify a statement, indicating that something is true under certain circumstances but not universally. It appropriately qualifies the claim that unhappy childhood leads to criminal behaviour, suggesting this happens only sometimes. 'Still if' is grammatically incorrect, 'Even somewhat' is awkward, and 'In progression' does not fit the context.
