NDA अंग्रेज़ी व्याकरण: भाषा के अंग (Parts of Speech) — सम्पूर्ण मार्गदर्शिका

beginner 18 min read

| Parts of Speech | हिंदी नाम | उदाहरण | |---|---|---| | Noun | संज्ञा | courage, abode, swimming | | Pronoun | सर्वनाम | he, she, they, I | | Verb | क्रिया | run, is, have told | | Adjective | विशेषण | half, humble, brave | | Adverb | क्रिया-विशेषण | quickly, now and again | | Preposition | पूर्वसर्ग | beyond, by, of | | Conjunction | समुच्चयबोधक | and, but, except (clause के साथ) | | Interjection | विस्मयादिबोधक | Oh! Alas! | | Determiner | निर्धारक | those, the, this, every |

यहाँ सबसे ज़रूरी बात यह है कि NDA में शब्द का function (वाक्य में भूमिका) देखकर word class तय होता है, न कि शब्द की बनावट देखकर। "Swimming" देखते ही "verb" मत लिखो — वाक्य में क्या काम कर रहा है, यह देखो।

गहन विश्लेषण

Noun —

अगर शब्द noun की गुण/विशेषता बता रहा है → Adjective अगर शब्द noun को point out/quantify कर रहा है (this, that, these, those, every, each, some, any) → Determiner

Gerund — verb से बना Noun

Gerund एक -ing form है जो वाक्य में Noun की तरह काम करती है।

Swimming is a healthy exercise.

यहाँ 'Swimming' वाक्य का subject है — subject हमेशा Noun होता है। इसलिए यह Gerund है (verb से बना Noun)।

Gerund vs Present Participle:

| | Gerund | Present Participle | |---|---|---| | काम | Noun की तरह | Adjective/Verb की तरह | | उदाहरण | Swimming is fun (subject) | The swimming boy (modifier) | | Test | Subject/Object बन सकता है? | Noun को modify कर रहा है? |

Adverb — क्रिया-विशेषण की विस्तृत पहचान

Adverb सिर्फ अकेला शब्द नहीं होता — पूरा phrase भी Adverb का काम कर सकता है।

Adverb किसे modify करता है:

  1. Verb को → He runs quickly
  2. Adjective को → She is very tall
  3. दूसरे Adverb को → He runs quite fast
  4. पूरे वाक्य को → Fortunately, he survived

Preposition बनाम Conjunction — "except" का जाल

यह NDA का सबसे classic trap है। शब्द वही, role अलग:

Preposition के रूप में: "Everyone except him came." → 'except' के बाद noun/pronoun → Preposition

Conjunction के रूप में: "I didn't tell him anything except that I needed the money." → 'except' के बाद clause → Conjunction

नियम: जो शब्द clause (subject + verb) introduce करे, वह Conjunction है। जो noun/pronoun के पहले आए, वह Preposition है।

Compound Prepositions — "by dint of" जैसे phrases

NDA में compound prepositions की पहचान पूछी जाती है। इनकी list याद रखो:

ये सब prepositional phrases हैं जो एक noun phrase को introduce करते हैं। इन्हें "Adverb" मत लिखो — structurally ये preposition हैं।

Pronoun की special categories

NDA में pronoun के types पूछे जाते हैं:

| Type | उदाहरण | |---|---| | Personal | I, you, he, she, they | | Demonstrative | this, that, these, those (जब noun absent हो) | | Interrogative | who, whom, whose, which, what | | Relative | who, whom, which, that (clause जोड़ने पर) | | Reflexive | myself, yourself, himself |

ध्यान दो: "those books" में 'those' → Determiner (noun present है), लेकिन "I want those" में 'those' → Pronoun (noun absent है)।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternFRET Test — Function से Parts of Speech पहचानो

किसी भी underlined शब्द पर FRET test लगाओ:

F — क्या यह किसी Fact/Name (व्यक्ति/स्थान/वस्तु) का नाम है? → Noun R — क्या यह किसी noun को Replace कर रहा है? → Pronoun E — क्या यह Verb को Extend (modify) कर रहा है? → Adverb T — क्या यह noun को Tag (identify/describe) कर रहा है? → Adjective या Determiner

उदाहरण: "those books" → 'those' noun को tag कर रहा है + specific identity दे रहा है → Determiner

Standard method: पाँचों options सोचो → 45 seconds FRET test: 3 questions → 12 seconds

eliminationClause Test — Preposition vs Conjunction पहचानो

Underlined शब्द के बाद क्या है?

  • Noun/Pronoun आया → Preposition
  • Subject + Verb (clause) आया → Conjunction

"except him" → noun → Preposition "except that I needed..." → clause (I + needed) → Conjunction

यह test 2 steps में करो — standard analysis 30 seconds, यह test 8 seconds।

patternING-Checker — Gerund vs Participle vs Verb

-ing वाला शब्द देखो, तीन सवाल पूछो:

  1. क्या यह subject या object की जगह है? → Gerund (Noun)
  2. क्या यह किसी noun को modify कर रहा है? → Present Participle (Adjective)
  3. क्या इसके साथ 'is/are/was/were' है? → Continuous Tense Verb

"Swimming is healthy" → subject की जगह → Gerund "The swimming boy" → boy को modify → Participle "He is swimming" → 'is' के साथ → Verb

3 questions, 10 seconds — बिना इस test के गलती की संभावना 40%।

substitutionDeterminer vs Adjective — Quick Swap Test

Underlined शब्द को एक descriptive adjective से replace करो:

  • अगर sentence का meaning बदल जाए और replacement awkward लगे → Determiner
  • अगर smoothly replace हो जाए → Adjective

"those books""tall books" → awkward → Determiner "half share""large share" → smooth → Adjective

Standard comparison: 4 options eliminate करो → 30 seconds. Swap test → 8 seconds।

patternCompound Preposition Recognition — BY/IN/ON से शुरू

NDA में जब भी कोई 2-3 शब्दों का phrase underline हो जो BY, IN, या ON से शुरू हो और किसी noun phrase से पहले आए:

by dint of, by means of, in spite of, on behalf of, in front of

→ सीधे Prepositional Phrase लिखो।

इन्हें Adverbial phrase का trap मत मानो। NDA की answer key इन्हें Prepositional Phrase classify करती है।

Standard method: 3 options सोचो → 20 seconds. Pattern recognition → 5 seconds।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

NDA में Parts of Speech के प्रश्न में यह decision tree follow करो:

Step 1: Underlined शब्द/phrase को वाक्य में पढ़ो — अकेले नहीं, context के साथ।

Step 2: शब्द के बाद क्या है?

Step 3: शब्द वाक्य में क्या काम कर रहा है?

Step 4: अगर 'this/that/these/those/every/each/some/any' है और noun के साथ है → Determiner लिखो, Pronoun या Adjective नहीं।

Determiner वहाँ होता जहाँ 'those/every/the' जैसे शब्द specific identity दें।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
He claimed his half share of the booty. (Identify the word class of the underlined word 'half')
  1. Adverb
  2. Adjective
  3. Noun
  4. Determiner
Solutionसमाधान
In this sentence, 'half' is modifying the noun 'share', describing what kind of share is being claimed. When a word modifies a noun by describing its quantity or quality, it functions as an adjective. While 'half' can also function as a determiner in some contexts, in standard grammatical analysis for sentences like 'half share', it is classified as an adjective describing the share.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: -ing words का trap NDA में बार-बार आता है। 'Swimming' को verb समझना सबसे common गलती है।

समाधान का रास्ता: ING-Checker लगाओ — 'Swimming' वाक्य का subject है ('is' का subject)। Subject = Noun की जगह। -ing form + Noun की जगह = Gerund। यह Verb नहीं है क्योंकि इसके साथ कोई auxiliary नहीं है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
Swimming is a healthy exercise. (Identify the word class of the underlined word 'Swimming')
  1. Verb
  2. Gerund
  3. Adjective
  4. Adverb
Solutionसमाधान
A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing that functions as a noun. In this sentence, 'Swimming' is the subject of the verb 'is' and refers to the activity of swimming as a thing/concept. Since it is derived from a verb but functions as a noun (the subject), it is a gerund. It is not acting as a verb here, nor as an adjective or adverb.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Phrase का word class पूछना NDA की नई pattern है। 'now and again' को Noun phrase समझने का trap है।

समाधान का रास्ता: 'now and again' = occasionally (meaning)। यह 'have told' को modify कर रहा है — कितनी बार? → frequency → Adverb। Adverb सिर्फ single word नहीं होता, phrase भी हो सकता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
I have told you now and again that you must not read such trash. (Identify the word class of the underlined words 'now and again')
  1. Conjunction
  2. Preposition
  3. Noun
  4. Adverb
Solutionसमाधान
The phrase 'now and again' means 'occasionally' or 'from time to time' and modifies the verb 'have told', indicating the frequency of the action. Words or phrases that modify verbs by answering questions like 'when', 'how often', or 'how' are adverbs (or adverbial phrases). Therefore, 'now and again' functions as an adverb in this sentence.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: 'by dint of' को Adverb लिखना बहुत tempting लगता है क्योंकि यह verb को modify कर रहा है। लेकिन structural classification अलग है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Compound Preposition trick लगाओ — 'by' से शुरू, noun phrase ('perseverance and sheer hard work') को introduce कर रहा है → Prepositional Phrase। NDA यहाँ function (adverbial) नहीं, structure (prepositional) देख रहा है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
He succeeded by dint of perseverance and sheer hard work. (Identify the word class of the underlined phrase 'by dint of')
  1. Conjunctival phrase
  2. Adjectival phrase
  3. Prepositional phrase
  4. Adverbial phrase
Solutionसमाधान
The phrase 'by dint of' means 'by means of' or 'because of' and consists of the preposition 'by', the noun 'dint', and the preposition 'of'. It functions as a compound preposition introducing the means by which something was achieved. Although it modifies the verb 'succeeded' (suggesting an adverbial function), as a structural classification, 'by dint of' is a prepositional phrase that introduces a noun phrase ('perseverance and sheer hard work').

क्यों यह प्रश्न: 'those' को Pronoun या Adjective लिखना सबसे common mistake है। Modern grammar का Determiner concept यहाँ critical है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Determiner vs Adjective Swap Test — 'those books' में 'those' को 'tall' से replace करो → 'tall books' awkward नहीं लगता पर meaning बदल जाता है। 'those' specific books point out कर रहा है, describe नहीं → Determiner। Pronoun नहीं क्योंकि noun 'books' present है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2026
I need you to return those books I lent you last month. (Identify the word class of the underlined word 'those')
  1. Modal
  2. Determiner
  3. Noun
  4. Adjective
Solutionसमाधान
In this sentence, 'those' specifies which books are being referred to—it points out specific books. Words like 'this', 'that', 'these', and 'those' that come before nouns to identify them are called demonstrative determiners. In modern grammar, these are classified as determiners rather than adjectives, as they help determine the reference of the noun. Therefore, 'those' is a determiner.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: 'abode' एक uncommon vocabulary word है — students इसे adjective या verb समझ सकते हैं।

समाधान का रास्ता: FRET test — 'abode' = "घर/निवास" — यह एक place का नाम है। Verb 'visit' का object है। Object की जगह = Noun। 'humble' इसका Adjective है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2024
You are most welcome to visit my humble abode. (Identify the word class of the underlined word 'abode'.)
  1. Noun
  2. Adjective
  3. Adverb
  4. Participle
Solutionसमाधान
'Abode' is a noun meaning a place of residence or home. In the sentence, it functions as the object of the verb 'visit', with 'humble' as its adjective modifier. Hence it belongs to the noun word class.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: 'beyond' को Adverb लिखने का trap है क्योंकि यह दोनों हो सकता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Clause Test — 'beyond' के बाद 'our control' (noun phrase) है → noun phrase के पहले आने वाला शब्द → Preposition। अगर 'beyond' के बाद कुछ न हो ("The forest lies beyond") तो Adverb होता।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2024
The situation is beyond our control. (Identify the word class of the underlined word 'beyond'.)
  1. Adjective
  2. Adverb
  3. Conjunction
  4. Preposition
Solutionसमाधान
In this sentence, 'beyond' is followed by the noun phrase 'our control' and shows the relationship between the situation and control. This function makes it a preposition. While 'beyond' can also be used as an adverb in other contexts, here it clearly governs a noun phrase and is a preposition.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: 'except' का dual role — Preposition और Conjunction दोनों — NDA का सबसे classic trap।

समाधान का रास्ता: Clause Test सीधे लगाओ — 'except' के बाद 'that I needed the money' है। 'that I needed...' में subject (I) + verb (needed) है → यह एक clause है → clause को introduce करने वाला → Conjunction। अगर 'except him' होता तो Preposition।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2024
I didn't tell him anything except that I needed the money. (Identify the word class of the underlined word 'except'.)
  1. Adjective
  2. Adverb
  3. Preposition
  4. Conjunction
Solutionसमाधान
In this sentence, 'except' is followed by the clause 'that I needed the money' — it connects two clauses, functioning as a conjunction. While 'except' can be a preposition when followed by a noun, here it is followed by a clause introduced by 'that', making it a conjunction.
