NDA अंग्रेज़ी: वाक्य सुधार — Subject-Verb Agreement, Tense, Preposition और Parts of Speech

intermediate 18 min read

अवधारणा

Sentence Improvement का मतलब है — एक दिए गए वाक्य में underlined हिस्से को देखकर यह तय करना कि उसमें व्याकरण की कोई गलती है या नहीं, और अगर है तो दिए गए विकल्पों में से सही विकल्प चुनना।

NDA के पेपर में यह section इसलिए कठिन लगता है क्योंकि गलत विकल्प अक्सर "सही सुनता है" — मतलब बोलचाल में हम वही कहते हैं। जैसे "Either the captain or his lieutenants was present" — रोज़मर्रा की बातचीत में यही कहेंगे, पर यह गलत है।

एक analogी समझो: मान लो तुम किसी फ़ौजी की वर्दी चेक कर रहे हो। दूर से सब ठीक दिखता है, पर पास जाओ तो एक बटन टेढ़ा है। Sentence Improvement ठीक यही काम है — वाक्य की संरचना के हर "बटन" को ध्यान से देखना।

इस topic में मुख्यतः पाँच क्षेत्रों में गलतियाँ होती हैं:

  1. Subject-Verb Agreement — विशेषकर correlative conjunctions (Neither...nor, Either...or) के साथ
  2. Tense Consistency — Reported Speech में tense का shift
  3. Preposition का प्रयोग — since vs for, emphasize on vs emphasize
  4. Parts of Speech का confusion — adjective की जगह adverb की ज़रूरत
  5. Parallel Structure — एक ही वाक्य में grammatically समान forms

जब भी "No improvement required" विकल्प हो, उसे dismiss मत करो। NDA में कई बार वाक्य सचमुच सही होता है और परीक्षार्थी घबराहट में बदलाव कर देते हैं। ठंडे दिमाग से नियम लगाओ।

गहन विश्लेषण

नियम 1: Correlative Conjunctions के साथ Subject-Verb Agreement

यह NDA में सबसे ज़्यादा बार आने वाला trap है।

Neither...nor / Either...or / Not only...but also — इन तीनों के साथ एक ही नियम काम करता है:

Proximity Rule: Verb उस subject के साथ agree करती है जो verb के सबसे नज़दीक हो।

देखो:

गलती वहाँ होती है जब पहला subject देखकर verb तय कर लेते हो। पहले वाले को देखना बंद करो — हमेशा दूसरे (verb के पास वाले) subject को देखो।

नियम 2: Reported Speech में Tense का Backshift

जब reporting verb past tense में हो (said, suggested, told, informed, reported), तो reported clause की verb भी past में shift होती है:

| Direct Speech | Reported Speech | |---|---| | may | might | | can | could | | will | would | | is/are | was/were | | has/have | had |

"The report suggested that enemy forces may have crossed..." — यहाँ suggested past tense है, इसलिए may को might में बदलना ज़रूरी है।

ध्यान रखो: might have + V3 past possibility को दर्शाता है। may have present/future possibility के लिए है।

नियम 3: Since vs For — Duration का फ़र्क

यह नियम सीधा है पर बहुत बार गलती होती है:

"The regiment has been deployed since five years" — गलत, क्योंकि "five years" एक duration है, point नहीं। सही: "...deployed for five years"

Test: क्या उस phrase की जगह "2020" या "Monday" रख सकते हो? अगर हाँ, तो since। अगर "three days" या "two hours" रख सकते हो, तो for

नियम 4: Adjective vs Adverb — किसे Modify कर रहे हो?

"...handle emergencies efficient" — यहाँ handle एक verb है। Verb को modify करना है, इसलिए adverb चाहिए: efficiently

Trap: अगर वाक्य में "She is a very efficient officer" हो, तो efficient सही है क्योंकि यह noun officer को modify कर रहा है।

नियम 5: Transitive Verbs और Preposition का ज़रूरत न होना

कुछ verbs naturally transitive हैं — इनके बाद सीधे object आता है, preposition की ज़रूरत नहीं:

इसी तरह: discuss (not "discuss about"), reach (not "reach to"), comprise (not "comprise of")।

नियम 6: Parallel Structure

जब दो या दो से अधिक actions एक ही construction में जुड़े हों, उनकी grammatical form एक जैसी होनी चाहिए:

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternProximity Probe — Correlative का जादुई फ़ॉर्मूला

जब भी Neither...nor या Either...or दिखे, पहले subject को छोड़ दो और सिर्फ दूसरे subject (verb के पास वाले) को देखो।

Micro-example: "Neither the jawans nor the colonel ___ present." Colonel = singular → "was present"

"Neither the colonel nor the jawans ___ present." Jawans = plural → "were present"

Standard method: दोनों subjects देखकर confuse होना = 30 seconds। Proximity Rule = 5 seconds।

patternDuration Detective — Since/For का दो-second test

Five years / Three months / Two hours — ये सब किसी काल का हिसाब हैं, कोई specific point नहीं। नियम: अगर phrase के साथ "ago" लगाकर भी sentence बने (five years ago), तो duration है → for। अगर phrase खुद एक moment है (Monday, 2019, morning) → since

Standard method: दोनों prepositions try करके देखना = 20 seconds। Test = 4 seconds।

eliminationVerb-or-Noun — Modify Target देखो

efficient vs efficiently के बीच confuse हो? वाक्य में देखो कि underlined word किस शब्द के पास बैठा है — अगर वह शब्द कोई action (verb) है, तो -ly form चाहिए।

"handle emergencies efficient" → handle = verb → efficiently (3 steps cut करता है) "an efficient officer" → officer = noun → efficient रहेगा

Standard method: दोनों options पढ़कर "सुनने में सही" वाला चुनना = 25 seconds और 40% error rate। यह test = 8 seconds और लगभग शून्य error।

eliminationPreposition Trap — हिंदी Translation छोड़ो

जब भी कोई verb का प्रयोग हो और preposition वाला विकल्प हो, यह सोचो: क्या हिंदी में इस verb को "पर", "के बारे में", "के लिए" से जोड़ते हो? अगर हाँ — यह trap हो सकता है। Emphasize पर → Emphasize on → गलत Discuss के बारे में → Discuss about → गलत Reach तक → Reach to → गलत

इस pattern को पहचानने में 2 seconds।

eliminationNo Improvement Detector — तीन-स्तरीय जाँच

जब "No improvement required" विकल्प हो, ये तीन checks 15 seconds में करो:

  1. Subject-Verb agreement सही है?
  2. Verb tense consistent है?
  3. Preposition/Parts of Speech सही हैं?

Step 2 — Trigger देखो:

Step 3 — "No improvement" विकल्प को last में रखो या first में।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Neither the army personnel nor the equipment was damaged in the recent border skirmish.
  1. Neither the army personnel nor the equipment was damaged
  2. Neither the army personnel nor the equipment were damaged
  3. Neither the army personnel or the equipment was damaged
  4. Neither the army personnel and the equipment was damaged
Solutionसमाधान
With 'neither...nor', the verb agrees with the subject closer to it. Since 'equipment' is uncountable and can be considered plural in this context, 'were' is more appropriate.
'Neither...nor' के साथ, क्रिया उसके नजदीकी subject के साथ agreement करती है। यहां 'personnel' plural है, इसलिए 'were' उपयुक्त है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Proximity Rule लगाओ। nor के बाद personnel है जो plural है → verb were होगी। Option B सही है। Option C में or है जो Neither...nor pattern तोड़ता है — गलत। Option D में and है — और भी गलत।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Reported Speech में Tense Backshift — may vs might का confusion NDA में direct form में आता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The intelligence report suggested that enemy forces may have crossed the border under cover of darkness.
  1. may have crossed the border
  2. might have crossed the border
  3. could have crossed the border
  4. would have crossed the border
Solutionसमाधान
Since this is reported speech in past tense ('suggested'), 'might have' is more appropriate than 'may have' to maintain tense consistency.
चूंकि यह past tense में reported speech है ('suggested'), tense consistency बनाए रखने के लिए 'might have' 'may have' से अधिक उपयुक्त है।

समाधान का रास्ता: suggested = past tense reporting verb → Backshift ज़रूरी। maymight। Option B सही। could have possibility नहीं, ability/permission दर्शाता है यहाँ — इसलिए यह भी उचित नहीं।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Either...or के साथ Proximity Rule — पहले subject देखकर गलती करना NDA का favourite trap।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Either the captain or his lieutenants was present at the morning parade. Which improvement is needed for the verb 'was'?
  1. had been
  2. will be
  3. were
  4. has been
Solutionसमाधान
With 'either...or', the verb agrees with the subject closer to it. Since 'lieutenants' is plural, the verb should be 'were'.
'Either...or' के साथ verb उस subject के साथ agree करती है जो उसके पास है। चूंकि 'lieutenants' plural है, इसलिए verb 'were' होनी चाहिए।

समाधान का रास्ता: or के बाद lieutenants है जो plural है → verb were होनी चाहिए। Option C (were) सही है। had been और has been perfect tenses हैं जो यहाँ context में fit नहीं करते।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Since vs For — duration और point का फ़र्क NDA में हर साल किसी न किसी form में आता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The regiment has been deployed in the border area since five years. What improvement is needed for 'since five years'?
  1. within five years
  2. during five years
  3. for five years
  4. from five years
Solutionसमाधान
'Since' is used with a specific point in time, while 'for' is used with a duration or period of time. 'Five years' represents a duration.
'Since' का प्रयोग किसी specific point in time के साथ होता है, जबकि 'for' का प्रयोग duration या time period के साथ होता है। 'Five years' एक duration है।

समाधान का रास्ता: five years एक duration है, specific time point नहीं। Duration के साथ for चाहिए। Option C (for five years) सही। within five years और during five years का meaning ही बदल जाता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Adjective vs Adverb का confusion — efficient vs efficiently — यह NDA में Parts of Speech topic के अंतर्गत regularly आता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The submarine crew was trained to operate under extreme conditions and handle emergencies efficient. What improvement is needed for 'efficient'?
  1. in efficient manner
  2. with efficiency
  3. efficiently
  4. more efficient
Solutionसमाधान
The word should modify the verb 'handle', so an adverb 'efficiently' is required instead of the adjective 'efficient'.
यह शब्द verb 'handle' को modify करना चाहिए, इसलिए adjective 'efficient' के बजाय adverb 'efficiently' की आवश्यकता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: handle एक verb है। Verb को modify करने के लिए adverb चाहिए → efficiently। Option C सही। in efficient manner में article an गायब है — वह भी गलत है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "No improvement required" वाले प्रश्न NDA में हमेशा होते हैं — परीक्षार्थी घबराहट में सही वाक्य को बदल देते हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The commanding officer instructed his troops to maintain discipline and follow the orders without any hesitation or delay.
  1. maintaining discipline and follow the orders
  2. to maintain discipline and to follow the orders
  3. No improvement required
  4. to maintain discipline and following the orders
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence is grammatically correct as it maintains parallel structure with two infinitives 'to maintain' and 'follow' in the instruction. No improvement is needed.
वाक्य व्याकरण की दृष्टि से सही है क्योंकि यह दो अनंत क्रियाओं 'to maintain' और 'follow' के साथ समानांतर संरचना बनाए रखता है। कोई सुधार की आवश्यकता नहीं है।

समाधान का रास्ता: instructed... to maintain... and follow — यहाँ to दोनों infinitives के साथ understood है (to maintain और [to] follow)। यह perfect parallel structure है। "No improvement required" सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Transitive verb के बाद गैर-ज़रूरी preposition — emphasize on vs emphasize — हिंदी medium students का सबसे आम trap।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The army chief emphasized on the importance of physical fitness and mental toughness.
  1. emphasized the importance of physical fitness
  2. emphasized upon the importance of physical fitness
  3. emphasized about the importance of physical fitness
  4. emphasized on the importance of physical fitness
Solutionसमाधान
The verb 'emphasize' is transitive and takes a direct object without any preposition. Using 'emphasized on' is incorrect; it should be 'emphasized the importance'.
क्रिया 'emphasize' सकर्मक है और बिना किसी पूर्वसर्ग के प्रत्यक्ष कर्म लेती है। 'emphasized on' का उपयोग गलत है; यह 'emphasized the importance' होना चाहिए।

समाधान का रास्ता: emphasize transitive verb है — directly object लेता है। on की कोई ज़रूरत नहीं। Option A (emphasized the importance) सही। Option B (emphasized upon) — upon भी गलत preposition है।
