intermediate 18 min read
- ये longitudinal/compressional तरंगें हैं।
2. Surface Waves (सतही तरंगें / L-तरंगें)
|---|---|---|---|
Longitudinal | Transverse | Surface |
(Intermediate-focus): 70–300 km
- Circum-Pacific Belt (Ring of Fire):
- Alpine-Himalayan Belt (Mid-Continental Belt):
Shortcut: 5 sec।
S-तरंग का S = "Solid Only"। Standard approach: 20 sec। Shortcut: 3 sec।
Shortcut: 5 sec।
Greek: Hypo = नीचे/under, Epi = ऊपर/upon। Hypodermic needle (hypo = under skin) Shortcut: 5 sec।
L = Last (seismograph पर सबसे अंत में), L = Largest destruction। दोनों L-से शुरू — एक ही अक्षर दो facts। Ring of Fire वाला प्रश्न हो या surface waves का — यह pattern तुरंत काम करता है। Standard approach: 3 अलग facts याद करना। Shortcut: 1 pattern, 2 facts — step count 3 से 1।
Consider the following statements: I. Earthquake waves are basically of two types, namely body waves and surface waves. II. The body waves interact with the surface rocks and generate surface waves. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- I only
- II only
- Both I and II
- Neither I nor II
Solution
Statement I is correct: seismic waves released from the focus of an earthquake are broadly divided into body waves (P and S waves), which travel through the Earth's interior, and surface waves (Love and Rayleigh), which travel along the Earth's surface. Statement II is also correct as per NCERT: when body waves reach the surface, their interaction with the surface rocks generates new types of waves called surface waves, which travel along the surface and are responsible for most of the damage caused by earthquakes. Both statements are correct.
Consider the following statements about hypocentre: I. It is the point from where the energy is released and is called the source of earthquake. II. It is the point from where the earthquake originates and can be many kilometres deep within the Earth. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- I only
- II only
- Both I and II
- Neither I nor II
Solution
The hypocentre (or focus) of an earthquake is the actual point within the Earth where the rupture begins and seismic energy is first released. So statement I correctly identifies it as the source of the earthquake. Statement II also correctly notes that the hypocentre lies within the Earth and can be at depths ranging from a few kilometres (shallow focus) to nearly 700 km (deep focus). The point on the Earth's surface directly above the hypocentre is the epicentre. Both statements describe the hypocentre correctly.
P = longitudinal (to and fro, तरंग की दिशा में), S = transverse (up and down, लंबवत) → Statement II सही।
Consider the following statements:
I. In a seismograph, P waves are recorded earlier than S waves.
II. In P waves, the individual particles vibrate to and fro in the direction of wave propagation whereas in S waves, the particles vibrate up and down at right angles to the direction of wave propagation.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- I only
- II only
- Both I and II
- Neither I nor II
Solution
Both statements are correct. P waves (Primary waves) are longitudinal/compressional waves that travel faster than S waves (Secondary waves), so they are always recorded first on a seismograph. In P waves, particles vibrate parallel to the direction of wave propagation (to and fro), while in S waves, which are transverse waves, particles vibrate perpendicular (up and down) to the direction of wave propagation.
Which of the following statements with reference to L-Wave or Long Wave generated by an earthquake is/are correct? 1. They follow the Earth's circumference 2. They travel at more or less at a constant rate. Select the answer using the code given below:
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Solution
Both statements about L-waves (Long waves or surface waves) are correct. L-waves, also known as Love waves and Rayleigh waves, are surface waves generated by earthquakes that travel along the Earth's surface and follow the curvature/circumference of the Earth rather than traveling through its interior. They also travel at a more or less constant rate as they propagate along the surface, unlike P and S waves which change speed dramatically as they pass through materials of varying densities in the Earth's interior. L-waves are the slowest seismic waves but cause the most destruction at the surface.
"Deep-focus = more damage" गलत है।
Statement 3 — deep-focus earthquakes cause MORE damage → गलत (shallow-focus ज़्यादा नुकसान करते हैं)। Answer: केवल 1 और 2।
Which of the following statements regarding earthquakes is/are correct?
1. The point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus is called the epicentre of the earthquake.
2. Earthquakes generate Primary and Secondary waves that radiate outward from the earthquake focus.
3. Deep-focus earthquakes are likely to cause more damage than shallow-focus earthquakes.
Select the answer using the code given below :
- 1 only
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Solution
Statements 1 and 2 are correct. The epicentre is indeed the point on the Earth's surface directly above the earthquake's focus (hypocenter). Earthquakes do generate P-waves (Primary, longitudinal) and S-waves (Secondary, transverse) that radiate outward from the focus. Statement 3 is incorrect — shallow-focus earthquakes (depth less than 70 km) typically cause more damage than deep-focus earthquakes because the seismic waves have less distance to travel to the surface, so they retain more energy and cause greater destruction.
-
"S waves can travel through liquids" — यह statement हमेशा गलत है।
-
P और S waves की कण-दोलन दिशा उलटाना: P = parallel (तरंग की दिशा में, to and fro)। S = perpendicular (लंबवत, up and down)। इसे "P = Parallel" से याद रखो।
-
