SSC CGL अंग्रेज़ी — गद्यांश बोध (Reading Comprehension) की सम्पूर्ण रणनीति
intermediate 18 min read
2. Factual / Direct Retrieval — अनुच्छेद में सीधे दी गई जानकारी।
3. Inference / Implication — जो सीधे नहीं कहा गया लेकिन अनुच्छेद के तर्क से निकलता है।
4. लेखक का स्वर (Author's Tone) — लेखक का दृष्टिकोण — आलोचनात्मक, तटस्थ, व्यंग्यात्मक, समर्थक।
5. Vocabulary in Context —
Signal words पहचानो:
- विरोध के संकेत: however, nevertheless, yet, but, despite, although, while, on the contrary — यहाँ लेखक पिछली बात को काटता है। ये बिन्दु inference प्रश्नों में अत्यंत महत्त्वपूर्ण होते हैं।
- समर्थन के संकेत: furthermore, moreover, in addition, indeed — लेखक अपना तर्क आगे बढ़ा रहा है।
- निष्कर्ष के संकेत: therefore, thus, hence, consequently, in conclusion — यहाँ लेखक का मुख्य निष्कर्ष आता है।
- उदाहरण के संकेत: for instance, for example, such as, as illustrated by — यह मुख्य विचार नहीं है, इसे support के रूप में पहचानो।
प्रश्न-प्रकार के अनुसार approach
मुख्य विचार प्रश्न:
गलत विकल्पों की पहचान करो पहले। वे विकल्प जो: (a) अनुच्छेद के केवल एक हिस्से की बात करें, (b) अनुच्छेद से बाहर की जानकारी लाएँ, (c) बहुत extreme दावा करें — ये सब गलत होते हैं। सही उत्तर पूरे अनुच्छेद को cover करता है, उसके किसी एक भाग को नहीं।
Tone प्रश्न:
Adjective pairs याद रखो: critical vs. neutral, analytical vs. descriptive, pessimistic vs. optimistic, sarcastic vs. straightforward। लेखक किस तरफ झुकता है — positive शब्द अधिक हैं या negative शब्द। "However", "yet", "but" जैसे शब्द जहाँ-जहाँ आते हैं, वहाँ लेखक का असली मत छिपा होता है।
Vocabulary in Context:
शब्द का dictionary अर्थ मत देखो। उस वाक्य में शब्द को हटाकर देखो — कौन सा विकल्प उस जगह बैठाने पर वाक्य का अर्थ सबसे सटीक रहता है। यही correct answer है।
Inference
- True but irrelevant: अनुच्छेद में कहीं न कहीं यह बात है, लेकिन प्रश्न जो माँग रहा है उससे सम्बन्धित नहीं।
- Half-true: विकल्प का पहला हिस्सा सही है, दूसरा हिस्सा अनुच्छेद के विरुद्ध जाता है। पूरे विकल्प को पढ़ो।
- Extreme claim: "Always", "never", "completely", "entirely", "only" जैसे शब्द अगर विकल्प में हों और अनुच्छेद में उस degree का दावा न हो — eliminate करो।
Long passage
जब भी Tone या Main Idea का प्रश्न हो, सबसे पहले अनुच्छेद में "however", "but", "yet", "nevertheless", "critics argue", "proponents contend" जैसे contrast markers खोजो। इन्हें underline करो। लेखक का असली मत हमेशा इन markers के बाद वाले clause में होता है।
उदाहरण: "Proponents argue X. However, critics counter that Y." — यहाँ लेखक Y की तरफ झुका है।
Standard method (पूरा अनुच्छेद फिर से पढ़ना): 3-4 मिनट। Signal word scanning: 45 seconds।
किसी भी विकल्प में "always", "never", "only", "completely", "entirely", "must", "all" जैसे absolute शब्द हों तो सावधान हो जाओ।
First-Last framework: 20-30 seconds।
तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा
परीक्षा-हॉल में यह decision tree follow करो:
Step 1 — प्रश्न पहले पढ़ो (30 seconds): सभी प्रश्नों को scan करो। Vocabulary questions mark करो — इनके लिए relevant sentence खोजना होगा। Main idea question को star करो — इसे अंत में करो।
Step 2 — Passage पढ़ो (2-3 minutes): First-Last sentence framework use करो। Signal words underline करो। हर paragraph का एक-line summary मन में बनाओ।
Step 3 — प्रश्न हल करो:
- Factual question → अनुच्छेद में locate करो, exact answer मिलेगा।
- Vocabulary question → Substitution method use करो।
- Tone question → Signal words देखो, extreme options eliminate करो।
- Inference question → Extreme Word Eliminator + Half-Truth Trap Detector use करो।
- Main idea question → First-Last framework + पूरा passage summary से match करो।
Which sentence best illustrates the limitation of relying solely on smart work?
- "Hard work… has historically been valorized..."
- "Smartness devoid of rigor often culminates in superficiality..."
- "The sagacious worker is one..."
- "They transcend the treadmill..."
Solutionसमाधान
Option (c) directly states that smartness without rigor leads to superficiality, clearly identifying the limitation of relying solely on smart work.
समाधान का रास्ता: "limitation" keyword की तलाश में अनुच्छेद में negative/cautionary statements ढूंढो। "Smartness devoid of rigor often culminates in superficiality" — यहाँ "devoid of rigor" = limitation, "superficiality" = consequence। यह statement directly limitation बताती है, इसलिए यही सही उत्तर है। बाकी विकल्पों में limitation के बजाय benefit या neutral statement होगी।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह एक classic factual retrieval question है। "Most instinctive and natural" — ये दोनों शब्द अनुच्छेद में exactly किस phrase के साथ आते हैं, वही उत्तर है।
What is the most instinctive and natural way for a person to express anger?
- By defending oneself
- By adapting strong behaviour
- By responding aggressively
- By inspiring powerful feelings
Solutionसमाधान
The passage states that the instinctive, natural way to express anger is to respond aggressively.
Which of the following places limits on how far we can take our anger?
- Instinct
- Feelings
- Law
- Behaviour
Solutionसमाधान
According to the passage, laws, social norms and common sense place limits on how far our anger can take us.
समाधान का रास्ता: अनुच्छेद में "laws, social norms and common sense" की list दी गई है। प्रश्न में "which of the following" से एक entity माँगी है। "Law" अनुच्छेद में explicitly है। "Government" या "police" जैसे plausible लेकिन unmentioned options को eliminate करो — अनुच्छेद में जो है वही answer।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह SSC CGL के recent trend का prime example है — long, analytical passage + "author's primary concern" question। यहाँ हर विकल्प partially true होगा। सही विकल्प वह है जो पूरे passage को cover करे।
The concept of fiscal federalism in India has undergone significant transformation since the establishment of the Finance Commission under Article 280 of the Constitution. The Finance Commission, constituted every five years, serves as the primary mechanism for vertical and horizontal devolution of resources between the Union and the States. The Fifteenth Finance Commission, chaired by N.K. Singh, recommended the devolution of 41% of the divisible pool of central taxes to the states, adjusting for the bifurcation of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories. However, the actual fiscal autonomy of states remains constrained by the proliferation of Centrally Sponsored Schemes, which come with rigid conditionalities that limit states' discretionary spending. Critics argue that while the letter of devolution is followed, its spirit is diluted through back-door centralisation. Furthermore, the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, though a landmark reform for cooperative federalism, has introduced new dependencies, with states relying on GST compensation to buffer revenue shortfalls. The compensation mechanism, originally guaranteed for five years, lapsed in 2022, leaving several states in fiscal distress. Proponents of deeper federalism advocate for untied grants that empower states to allocate resources according to local priorities rather than centrally mandated programmes. The debate ultimately hinges on whether uniformity of development outcomes justifies the curtailment of state autonomy, or whether heterogeneous local needs demand heterogeneous fiscal solutions.
Which of the following best describes the author's primary concern in the passage?
- The tension between formal devolution of funds and the practical erosion of state fiscal autonomy through central conditionalities and dependencies.
- The negative impact of the Goods and Services Tax on the economic growth of backward states.
- The inadequacy of the Finance Commission's formula for distributing taxes among the states of India.
- The need to abolish Centrally Sponsored Schemes and replace them entirely with untied grants.
Solutionसमाधान
The passage does not restrict itself to criticising the Finance Commission's formula, nor does it argue for complete abolition of CSS. The author's overarching concern is the contradiction between formal fiscal devolution (41% share, Finance Commission mandates) and the practical erosion of autonomy through CSS conditionalities and GST compensation lapses — a nuanced tension rather than a single-policy critique.
समाधान का रास्ता: First-Last framework: पहला वाक्य — "fiscal federalism has undergone transformation." अंतिम वाक्य — "whether uniformity of outcomes justifies curtailment of state autonomy." इससे central tension स्पष्ट है: formal devolution vs. practical erosion। अब विकल्प देखो — जो विकल्प "tension between formal devolution and practical erosion" कहे, वही सही है। Half-Truth Trap: कोई विकल्प सिर्फ Finance Commission formula की आलोचना का होगा — यह passage का एक हिस्सा है, पूरा नहीं।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Tone question। "Critically analytical" vs. "neutral" vs. "pessimistic" — इन्हें signal words से distinguish करना होता है।
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being embedded into the administrative machinery of modern states, raising profound questions about accountability, transparency, and the future of democratic governance. Governments across the world are deploying AI-driven systems to allocate welfare benefits, adjudicate visa applications, flag potential tax fraud, and even assist judicial processes. Proponents argue that algorithmic decision-making reduces human bias, accelerates processing times, and allows governments to serve larger populations with constrained bureaucratic resources. However, critics counter that these systems often embed and amplify existing societal biases, particularly against women, minorities, and economically marginalised groups, because they are trained on historical data that reflects past discrimination. A striking illustration came from the Netherlands, where an AI-powered tax fraud detection system was found to have disproportionately flagged families with dual nationalities, leading to wrongful recovery actions that destroyed thousands of livelihoods and eventually toppled the government. The opacity of these systems is a further concern: when an algorithm denies a citizen a welfare payment, that citizen has limited recourse because the decision-making rationale is buried in code that neither the administrator nor the affected individual can interrogate. Legal scholars argue that this opacity violates the principle of reasoned administrative action — a cornerstone of rule of law in liberal democracies. For AI to be a legitimate instrument of governance, they contend, it must be accompanied by robust audit mechanisms, mandatory explainability standards, and independent oversight bodies with genuine enforcement powers.
The author's tone in this passage can best be described as:
- Critically analytical — acknowledging the potential benefits of AI in governance while foregrounding serious ethical and structural risks that demand regulatory safeguards.
- Wholly pessimistic — the author believes AI-driven governance is irredeemably flawed and should be abandoned entirely by democratic states.
- Enthusiastically supportive — the author celebrates AI's capacity to reduce human bias and improve government efficiency as transformative achievements.
- Neutral and descriptive — the author presents arguments from both sides without expressing any evaluative stance on the use of AI in governance.
Solutionसमाधान
The author acknowledges proponents' arguments but devotes significantly more space to risks, uses emotionally charged examples (the Netherlands scandal), and explicitly calls for regulatory safeguards, indicating a critically analytical rather than neutral or purely pessimistic tone. The passage never advocates abandonment of AI, ruling out Option B, and the weight of criticism rules out Option A.
समाधान का रास्ता: Signal words scan करो: "Proponents argue... However, critics counter..." — लेखक critics की बात अधिक space देता है। "A striking illustration came from Netherlands" — emotionally loaded example। लेकिन "for AI to be a legitimate instrument" — लेखक AI को abandon नहीं कर रहा, safeguards माँग रहा है। इसलिए "critically analytical" — benefits acknowledge + risks foreground करना — सही tone है। "Purely pessimistic" eliminate: passage AI को completely reject नहीं करता।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Vocabulary-in-context — "substrate" का अर्थ उस geological context में।
The phenomenon of permafrost thaw represents one of the most consequential yet underappreciated feedback loops in contemporary climate science. Permafrost — ground that has remained frozen for at least two consecutive years — underlies approximately 25% of the Northern Hemisphere's land surface, predominantly in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and the Tibetan Plateau. Trapped within this frozen substrate are vast reservoirs of organic carbon, estimated at nearly 1.5 trillion tonnes, accumulated over millennia from decomposed plant and animal matter. As global temperatures rise, permafrost begins to thaw, exposing this organic material to microbial decomposition. The decomposition process releases carbon dioxide and methane — the latter being approximately 80 times more potent as a greenhouse gas over a 20-year horizon than CO₂. This release then accelerates warming, which in turn causes more permafrost to thaw, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that climate models have historically struggled to fully incorporate. A 2023 study published in Nature Climate Change estimated that permafrost thaw could release emissions equivalent to adding a large industrialised nation's annual output to the atmosphere each year by mid-century, even under moderate warming scenarios. The implications for the 1.5°C target enshrined in the Paris Agreement are severe: carbon budgets calculated without adequately accounting for permafrost feedback may be systematically overestimated, potentially rendering current mitigation pledges insufficient to prevent runaway warming.
In the context of the passage, what does the word 'substrate' most nearly mean?
- The underlying frozen layer of ground in which organic carbon is stored.
- A scientific model used to calculate carbon budgets for climate agreements.
- The atmospheric layer where methane accumulates after permafrost releases it.
- A chemical compound produced during microbial decomposition of organic matter.
Solutionसमाधान
In the passage, 'substrate' is used in the phrase 'this frozen substrate' referring to the permafrost ground layer that holds trapped organic carbon. It is a geological/biological term for the underlying material or medium — here, the frozen ground. The other options confuse it with chemical products, models, or atmospheric layers, none of which the passage associates with the word.
समाधान का रास्ता: Substitution method: "Trapped within this frozen substrate are vast reservoirs of organic carbon." अब "substrate" की जगह प्रत्येक विकल्प रखो। "Underlying frozen layer of ground" रखने पर वाक्य perfectly intact रहता है। "Chemical product" या "atmospheric layer" रखने पर वाक्य का अर्थ टूट जाता है। Dictionary अर्थ याद न हो तो भी context से answer मिल जाता है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह एक nuanced factual + inference question है — Google-IBM dispute के बारे में passage क्या कहता है।
Quantum computing stands at the frontier of a technological revolution that promises to redefine the boundaries of computational possibility. Unlike classical computers, which encode information in binary bits — each existing as either a 0 or a 1 — quantum computers exploit the principles of superposition and entanglement to operate with qubits that can exist in multiple states simultaneously. This parallelism theoretically enables quantum machines to solve certain categories of problems, such as integer factorisation and molecular simulation, exponentially faster than the most powerful classical supercomputers. In 2019, Google's Sycamore processor claimed 'quantum supremacy' by completing a specific computational task in 200 seconds that it asserted would take a classical supercomputer approximately 10,000 years. IBM subsequently disputed this claim, arguing that optimised classical algorithms could perform the same task in 2.5 days. This controversy underscores a critical nuance: quantum advantage is problem-specific and context-dependent, not a blanket superiority across all computational tasks. More immediate practical concerns include the challenge of qubit decoherence — the tendency of qubits to lose their quantum properties through environmental interference — and the high error rates that currently necessitate the use of thousands of physical qubits to produce a single reliable logical qubit. India's National Quantum Mission, approved in 2023 with an outlay of ₹6,003 crore over eight years, aims to develop intermediate-scale quantum computers and position India as a global player in this emerging technology domain.
According to the passage, what is the most accurate characterisation of the Google-IBM dispute over quantum supremacy?
- It proved that classical supercomputers are more reliable than quantum computers for all practical applications.
- It revealed that quantum advantage is task-specific rather than a universal computational superiority over classical systems.
- It showed that IBM's quantum computers were superior to Google's in solving the factorisation problem.
- It demonstrated that Google's Sycamore processor had fabricated its experimental results to claim false supremacy.
Solutionसमाधान
The passage explicitly states that the controversy 'underscores a critical nuance: quantum advantage is problem-specific and context-dependent, not a blanket superiority.' IBM disputed Google's benchmark estimate, not the integrity of the experiment. The passage does not mention IBM quantum computers performing the task — IBM argued that a classical algorithm could do it in 2.5 days, not that IBM's quantum machine was superior.
समाधान का रास्ता: Passage में: "This controversy underscores a critical nuance: quantum advantage is problem-specific and context-dependent, not a blanket superiority."
