SSC CGL अंग्रेज़ी — रिक्त स्थान भरें: Prepositions, Collocations और Vocabulary

beginner 18 min read

(Preposition, Tense, Agreement)

Preposition: For vs. Since

यह SSC CGL का सबसे बार-बार दोहराया जाने वाला trap है।

नियम: अगर blank के बाद एक संख्या + time period (years, months, days) हो — हमेशा for। अगर blank के बाद एक साल, दिन, या घटना हो — हमेशा since

"During" का प्रयोग किसी विशेष अवधि के दौरान होने वाली घटना के लिए होता है: "during the war", "during the meeting" — यह "for" या "since" का substitute नहीं है।

Subject-Verb Agreement: Neither...Nor / Either...Or

SSC CGL इस rule को बार-बार test करता है:

| Structure | Verb Agreement | |---|---| | Neither A nor B | B के अनुसार | | Either A or B | B के अनुसार | | Not only A but also B | B के अनुसार |

नियम याद रखो: verb हमेशा blank के निकटतम (nearest) subject से agree करती है।

"Neither the manager nor the employees ______ aware" — यहाँ nearest subject = employees (plural) → were।

ध्यान रखो: वाक्य भूतकाल (past) में है तो "is/are" का प्रयोग गलत होगा — यहाँ tense की double जाँच जरूरी है।

Layer 2 — Collocation की जाँच

Collocation वह word pair है जो अंग्रेज़ी में convention के आधार पर सही माना जाता है। इन्हें तुम derive नहीं कर सकते — इन्हें देखकर, पढ़कर, याद करके ही सीखा जाता है।

SSC CGL में सबसे अधिक आने वाले verb + noun collocations:

| Verb | Noun | |---|---| | maintain | silence, records, law and order | | make | a decision, progress, an effort | | take | measures, precautions, a risk | | pay | attention, a compliment, a visit | | keep | a promise, in touch, track | | draw | a conclusion, a distinction, attention | | raise | a question, funds, awareness | | break | a record, the ice, the law |

जब blank में verb भरना हो और चारों options के अर्थ लगभग मिलते-जुलते हों — तुरंत collocation pattern से जाँचो। अर्थ से नहीं, जोड़े से सोचो।

Layer 3 — Context-based Vocabulary

उदाहरण: "always finding ways to remain positive even in the most challenging situations" → यह resilient का direct description है।

उदाहरण: "surprised everyone in the industry" + "enter new market" → surprise + risk = audacious।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternFor/Since का 2-Second Test

जब भी for/since/during/from का blank दिखे — blank के बाद का phrase देखो।

  • संख्या + time unit (five years, three months) → for
  • साल/दिन/घटना (2019, Monday, childhood) → since
  • "during the [event/period]" pattern → during

Standard method: पूरा grammar rule याद करो और apply करो — 30 seconds। इस pattern से: 5 seconds। Step count: 4 steps से 1 step।

patternNearest Subject Rule — Neither/Either के लिए

"Neither A nor B verb" वाले प्रश्न में: B को देखो, B के अनुसार verb चुनो। A को completely ignore करो।

उदाहरण: "Neither the director nor the actors ______ present" → actors (plural, past) → were।

"Either the students or the teacher ______ responsible" → teacher (singular, present) → is।

Standard method: दोनों subjects को consider करके rule apply — 20 seconds। इस trick से: 8 seconds। 3 steps से 1 step।

eliminationTone-Scan Technique — Vocabulary Blanks के लिए

Blank को पढ़ने से पहले बाकी वाक्य में tone-signal words scan करो:

  • "positive", "despite challenges", "even though difficult" → positive adjective
  • "surprising", "bold", "risk" → strong positive (audacious, compelling, resilient)
  • "control", "reduce", "fight against" → curb/check/suppress/restrain

फिर options में से negative शब्द eliminate करो। अक्सर 2-3 options तुरंत हट जाते हैं।

Standard method: चारों options का अर्थ जाँचना — 40 seconds। Tone-scan + elimination — 15 seconds। 4 steps से 2 steps।

eliminationCollocation Elimination — अर्थ नहीं, जोड़ा देखो

जब blank में verb भरना हो और चारों options के अर्थ similar हों — तुरंत यह सोचो: "यह verb किस noun के साथ naturally आती है?"

Trap: "maintain/preserve/retain/keep up silence" — सभी का अर्थ "बनाए रखना" है। लेकिन standard English collocation = maintain silence

Test: क्या तुमने इस combination को किसी formal text में पढ़ा है? नहीं → eliminate।

Standard method: अर्थ से decide करना — 35 seconds (और गलती की संभावना)। Collocation check — 10 seconds।

eliminationGrammar-First Filter — 3-Layer Sequence

हर fill in the blank प्रश्न में इस sequence को follow करो:

Step 1 (5 sec): क्या blank में grammar word है (preposition/verb/article)? → Grammar rule apply करो।

Step 2 (5 sec): क्या सभी options की same grammatical category है? → Collocation check करो।

Step 3 (5 sec): क्या सभी options similar meaning के हैं? → Context/tone scan करो।

यह filter पहले ही step पर रुक जाता है जब grammar से answer clear हो। तीनों steps तक जाने की ज़रूरत अक्सर नहीं पड़ती।

Standard method: सभी options को equally test करना — 45+ seconds। यह framework — 15 seconds।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा हॉल में हर Fill in the Blank प्रश्न पर यह decision tree follow करो:

पहले 3 seconds: blank देखो — क्या यह preposition है (for/since/during/of/in)? → हाँ → blank के बाद का phrase देखो → duration या point of time?

For vs. Since — SSC CGL का सबसे classic preposition trap। यह combination हर तीन-चार papers में एक बार आता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
She has been working in this company ______ five years.
  1. for
  2. during
  3. since
  4. from
Solutionसमाधान
We use 'for' with a period of time (five years, two months, etc.) to indicate duration. 'Since' is used with a point in time (since 2019, since Monday). 'From' and 'during' do not fit grammatically in this context.
'For' का प्रयोग समयावधि (five years, two months) के साथ किया जाता है। 'Since' का प्रयोग समय के किसी निश्चित बिंदु के साथ होता है जैसे since 2019। इस वाक्य में 'five years' एक अवधि है, इसलिए 'for' सही है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Blank के बाद "five years" देखो → यह duration (अवधि) है, point of time नहीं → For। "Since" तब होता जब "2019" या "Monday" जैसा specific point होता। "During" तब होता जब कोई event name होती। "From" अकेला नहीं आता — "from...to" structure में आता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Collocation trap — चारों options के अर्थ लगभग एक जैसे लगते हैं। यह SSC CGL की सबसे common trick है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The teacher asked the students to ______ silence during the examination.
  1. retain
  2. keep up
  3. preserve
  4. maintain
Solutionसमाधान
'Maintain silence' is the standard collocation used in formal English. While 'preserve' and 'retain' have similar meanings, they are not idiomatically paired with 'silence'. 'Keep up' implies continuing an effort, not staying quiet.

"Keep up" = pace/speed के साथ आता है। Collocation elimination: तीन options तुरंत हटते हैं।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Neither...nor का Subject-Verb Agreement — plural/singular और tense दोनों एक साथ test होते हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Neither the manager nor the employees ______ aware of the new policy.
  1. is
  2. are being
  3. were
  4. was
Solutionसमाधान
With 'neither...nor', the verb agrees with the subject closest to it. Here 'employees' (plural) is closest to the verb, so the plural verb 'were' is correct. Also, the sentence refers to a past situation, making 'were' the right choice.
'Neither...nor' के साथ क्रिया (verb) निकटतम subject के अनुसार होती है। यहाँ 'employees' बहुवचन (plural) है, इसलिए 'were' सही है। वाक्य भूतकाल (past tense) में है, इसलिए भी 'were' उचित है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Nearest subject = "employees" (plural) → plural verb चाहिए। वाक्य का context past tense में है (new policy — past announcement) → "were" सही। "Is" singular present — दोनों तरफ़ से गलत। "Are being" present continuous — tense गलत।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Context clue से vocabulary — वाक्य में ही answer छुपा है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
She has a _______ nature, always finding ways to remain positive even in the most challenging situations.
  1. aggressive
  2. resilient
  3. fragile
  4. indifferent
Solutionसमाधान
'Resilient' means able to recover quickly from difficulties and remain positive. The sentence describes someone who stays positive in challenging situations, which aligns with resilience.
'Resilient' का अर्थ है कठिनाइयों से जल्दी उबरने और सकारात्मक रहने में सक्षम। वाक्य में व्यक्ति चुनौतीपूर्ण परिस्थितियों में सकारात्मक रहता है, इसलिए 'resilient' सही है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Context clue phrase = "always finding ways to remain positive even in the most challenging situations"। यह exactly resilient की definition है। Tone-scan: positive → aggressive (negative), fragile (negative), indifferent (negative) — तीनों eliminate। केवल resilient बचता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Strong vocabulary + surprise element = audacious। यह pattern SSC CGL में CEO/leader decisions के context में बार-बार आता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The CEO's _______ decision to enter the new market surprised everyone in the industry.
  1. routine
  2. cautious
  3. timid
  4. audacious
Solutionसमाधान
'Audacious' means showing a willingness to take bold risks. A surprising decision to enter a new market reflects boldness and risk-taking, making 'audacious' the best fit.
'Audacious' का अर्थ है साहसिक जोखिम लेने की इच्छा। नए बाजार में प्रवेश करने का आश्चर्यजनक निर्णय साहस और जोखिम को दर्शाता है, इसलिए 'audacious' सही है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Context signals: "surprised everyone" + "new market" + CEO का decision → risk-taking, bold action। Tone: strong positive। "Routine" = normal, opposite of surprise। "Cautious" = careful, opposite of surprising। "Timid" = डरपोक — CEO के लिए clearly negative। केवल audacious = bold/daring बचता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Government + inflation + "affecting common man" = control/reduce करने की ज़रूरत। Vocabulary में antonym-trap।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The government announced measures to _______ the rising inflation that has been affecting the common man.
  1. amplify
  2. curb
  3. overlook
  4. promote
Solutionसमाधान
'Curb' means to restrain or keep something under control. The government announcing measures against rising inflation implies they want to control it, so 'curb' is correct.
'Curb' का अर्थ है किसी चीज़ को नियंत्रण में रखना। सरकार का बढ़ती मुद्रास्फीति के खिलाफ उपाय करना इसे नियंत्रित करने की इच्छा दर्शाता है, इसलिए 'curb' सही है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Measures to _____ rising inflation" — inflation को बढ़ाना नहीं, रोकना है। Tone: negative problem → solution verb चाहिए। "Amplify" = बढ़ाना (opposite)। "Overlook" = ignore करना (illogical)। "Promote" = बढ़ावा देना (opposite)। केवल curb = नियंत्रित करना बचता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Lawyer + jury + innocence + "no doubt" = extremely strong/convincing argument।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The lawyer presented a _______ argument that left the jury with no doubt about his client's innocence.
  1. compelling
  2. vague
  3. irrelevant
  4. confusing
Solutionसमाधान
A compelling argument is one that is convincing and persuasive. The jury having no doubt about innocence indicates the argument was strongly persuasive, i.e., 'compelling'.
'Compelling' का अर्थ है ऐसा तर्क जो बहुत ही विश्वसनीय और प्रेरक हो। जूरी को निर्दोषता के बारे में कोई संदेह न होना दर्शाता है कि तर्क अत्यंत प्रभावी था।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Left the jury with no doubt" → argument इतना strong था कि कोई doubt नहीं रहा। Tone: strong positive। "Vague" = अस्पष्ट (opposite effect होता)। "Irrelevant" = असंबंधित (jury convince कैसे होती?)। "Confusing" = उलझाने वाला (doubt रहता)। केवल compelling = अत्यंत प्रेरक सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Academic context + "eliminate grammatical errors" = proofread की exact definition।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The students were asked to _______ their essays before submitting them to eliminate grammatical errors.
  1. memorise
  2. proofread
  3. plagiarise
  4. discard
Solutionसमाधान
'Proofread' means to read and correct a piece of written work. The context of eliminating grammatical errors before submission clearly calls for proofreading.
'Proofread' का अर्थ है किसी लिखित कार्य को पढ़कर सुधारना। व्याकरण संबंधी त्रुटियों को दूर करने के संदर्भ में 'proofread' सबसे उपयुक्त है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Before submitting" + "eliminate grammatical errors" → यह proofread की textbook definition है। "Memorise" = याद करना (grammar errors से कोई संबंध नहीं)। "Plagiarise" = नकल करना (negative, not what teachers ask)। "Discard" = फेंकना (opposite of submit)। केवल proofread सही है।
