SSC CGL अंग्रेज़ी: वाक्य सुधार (Sentence Improvement) — पूर्ण मार्गदर्शिका

intermediate 18 min read

1. Since vs. For — सबसे ज़्यादा पूछा जाने वाला trap

यह SSC CGL का सबसे पुनरावृत्त (repetitive) error है। नियम सीधा है:

परखने का तरीका: रेखांकित हिस्से में जो समय-शब्द है, खुद से पूछो — "क्या यह एक point है या एक span?"

और याद रखो: जहाँ since/for हो, वहाँ tense लगभग हमेशा Present Perfect या Present Perfect Continuous होगा।

2. Subject-Verb Agreement — Neither/Nor और Along With

Neither...nor / Either...or का नियम: इन structures में verb उसके सबसे नज़दीकी subject के अनुसार बनती है। इसे "Proximity Rule" कहते हैं।

Along with / together with / as well as का नियम: इन phrases से जो दूसरा noun जुड़ता है, वह grammatically subject नहीं बनता। Verb मुख्य subject के अनुसार चलती है।

यह SSC का classic trap है — "along with" देखकर बहुत सारे छात्र plural verb चुन लेते हैं।

One of the... का नियम: "one of the" के बाद आने वाला relative clause plural subject को modify करता है।

यहाँ antecedent "students" (plural) है, इसलिए "have" सही है।

3. Tense Errors — Present Perfect Continuous का सही प्रयोग

जब वाक्य में since/for के साथ कोई action अतीत से शुरू होकर अब भी जारी हो, तो:

Structure: Subject + has/have + been + V-ing + since/for + time

4. Reported Speech में Question Word के साथ 'That'

Indirect speech में जब question word (why, how, when, where, what) हो, तो उससे पहले 'that' नहीं लगाते

साथ ही, reported question में word order statement जैसा होता है, question जैसा नहीं:

5. Relative Pronouns — Who, Which, That

SSC में अक्सर person के लिए "which" दे देते हैं — यह गलत है।

6. Fixed Idiomatic Pairs — इन्हें रटो, समझना बाद में

| पहला हिस्सा | दूसरा हिस्सा | |---|---| | No sooner | than | | Hardly / Scarcely | when | | Not only | but also | | Neither | nor | | Either | or | | Both | and | | So...that | — | | Such...that | — |

"No sooner...than" का pair तोड़कर "No sooner...when" या "No sooner...then" लिखना SSC का बार-बार आने वाला trap है।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternSince-For 3-सेकंड Test

रेखांकित preposition since/for देखते ही — उसके बाद का time-word देखो। अगर उसमें कोई specific date/day/year/moment है → since। अगर duration है (hours, days, years, months) → for। यह test 3 सेकंड में होता है। Standard method में छात्र वाक्य को बार-बार पढ़ते हैं: लगभग 30-40 सेकंड। इस trick से: 3-5 सेकंड।

eliminationAlong With — मुख्य Subject खोजो

जब "along with", "together with", "as well as", "in addition to" दिखे — इन्हें मन में brackets में बंद कर दो। जो subject बचे, उसी के अनुसार verb चुनो।

उदाहरण: "The teacher [along with her students] ___ going." Bracket हटाओ → "The teacher ___ going." → was।

Standard method (दोनों nouns गिनना): 25-30 सेकंड। यह method: 8-10 सेकंड। 3 steps बनाम 1 step।

eliminationReported Speech — 'That' हटाओ Test

Indirect speech वाले प्रश्न में options देखते ही — जिस भी option में question word से पहले 'that' लगा हो (that why, that how, that when), उसे तुरंत eliminate करो। फिर बचे options में word order देखो: subject + verb क्रम सही है? Standard method: पूरा reported speech नियम याद करना — 40 सेकंड। यह elimination: 10 सेकंड।

patternNeither/Nor — Proximity Rule (नज़दीकी जीतता है)

Neither...nor देखते ही सीधे 'nor' के बाद वाले subject पर जाओ। वही subject तय करता है कि verb singular होगी या plural।

  • ...nor the manager (singular) → was/is
  • ...nor the employees (plural) → were/are

इसे याद करो: "nor के बाद जो है, verb वही सोचता है।" Standard method (दोनों subjects analyze करना): 20 सेकंड। Proximity shortcut: 6 सेकंड।

eliminationNo Improvement को जल्दी पहचानो

जब underlined part में कोई standard idiom/pair पूरा हो (जैसे No sooner...than, Hardly...when), तो पहले "No improvement" option को seriously consider करो।

Step 2 — Error category पहचानो

Step 3 — Eliminate करो गलत options को काटो, एक बचे तो confirm करो।

Step 4 — "No improvement" last resort नहीं, पहला check अगर underlined part किसी एक भी नियम का उल्लंघन नहीं करता — No improvement चुनो।

Target time per question: 20-30 सेकंड।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Since vs. For का सबसे basic और सबसे ज़्यादा पूछा जाने वाला form। समाधान का रास्ता: "five years" = duration (span), इसलिए for। Since के साथ 2015 / Monday जैसे point होते। Answer: (B)।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the option that improves the underlined part of the sentence. If no improvement is needed, select 'No improvement'. He has been working in this company since five years.
  1. from five years
  2. for five years
  3. No improvement
  4. by five years
Solutionसमाधान
'Since' is used with a specific point in time (e.g., since 2019), whereas 'for' is used with a period or duration of time (e.g., for five years). Since the sentence refers to a duration, 'for five years' is correct.
'Since' का प्रयोग किसी निश्चित समय बिंदु के साथ होता है जबकि 'for' का प्रयोग समयावधि के साथ होता है। 'Five years' एक समयावधि है, इसलिए 'for five years' सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Reported Speech में question word के साथ 'that' जोड़ना — SSC का classic trap। समाधान का रास्ता: Step 1 — "that why" देखते ही option (A) और (D) eliminate। Step 2 — option (B) में word order गलत है (were they = question order)। Step 3 — option (C) में correct order: why they were। Answer: (C)।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the option that improves the underlined part of the sentence. If no improvement is needed, select 'No improvement'. The teacher asked the students that why they were making noise.
  1. why were they making noise
  2. No improvement
  3. why they were making noise
  4. that why are they making noise
Solutionसमाधान
In reported speech, the conjunction 'that' is not used before a question word like 'why'. The correct structure is: asked + question word + subject + verb. So 'asked the students why they were making noise' is correct, and the underlined part 'why they were making noise' is already correct without 'that'.
Reported speech में question word (जैसे 'why') से पहले 'that' का प्रयोग नहीं होता। सही structure है: asked + question word + subject + verb। इसलिए 'why they were making noise' सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Since 2015" के साथ Simple Present का प्रयोग — tense error पहचानने की practice। समाधान का रास्ता: "since 2015" = past point, action अब भी जारी → Present Perfect Continuous चाहिए। "is working" गलत। "is been working" grammatically असंभव। "worked" = Past Simple, since के साथ नहीं चलता। Answer: (D) has been working।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the option that improves the underlined part of the sentence. If no improvement is needed, select 'No improvement required'. She is working in this company since 2015.
  1. worked
  2. is been working
  3. No improvement required
  4. has been working
Solutionसमाधान
The sentence uses 'since 2015', which indicates an action that started in the past and is still continuing. Such sentences require the Present Perfect Continuous tense: 'has been working'. Using simple present 'is working' with 'since' is grammatically incorrect.
वाक्य में 'since 2015' का उपयोग है, जो यह दर्शाता है कि क्रिया अतीत में शुरू हुई और अभी भी जारी है। ऐसे वाक्यों में Present Perfect Continuous tense 'has been working' का प्रयोग होता है। Simple Present 'is working' के साथ 'since' का उपयोग व्याकरण की दृष्टि से गलत है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Neither...nor के साथ Proximity Rule — Subject-Verb Agreement का सबसे tricky form। समाधान का रास्ता: Nor के बाद "employees" (plural) है → verb plural होगी → "were"। "was" गलत क्योंकि निकटतम subject plural है। Answer: (A) were।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the option that will improve the underlined part of the given sentence. If no improvement is required, select 'No improvement'. Neither the manager nor the employees _was_ present at the meeting.
  1. were
  2. are
  3. is
  4. No improvement
Solutionसमाधान
In a 'neither...nor' construction, the verb agrees with the subject closest to it. Here, 'employees' (plural) is closest to the verb, so 'were' is correct.
'Neither...nor' के निर्माण में, क्रिया उसके निकटतम subject के साथ मेल खाती है। यहाँ 'employees' (बहुवचन) क्रिया के सबसे निकट है, इसलिए 'were' सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Along with" वाला trap — यहाँ छात्र "students" देखकर plural verb चुन लेते हैं। समाधान का रास्ता: "along with her students" को mentally bracket करो। मुख्य subject "The teacher" (singular) → "was" सही। Answer: (A) was।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the option that will improve the underlined part of the given sentence. If no improvement is required, select 'No improvement'. The teacher along with her students _were_ going to the museum.
  1. was
  2. are
  3. No improvement
  4. have been
Solutionसमाधान
When the subject is connected to another noun by 'along with', the verb agrees with the main subject, not the noun in the phrase. 'The teacher' is singular, so 'was' is correct.
जब subject किसी अन्य noun से 'along with' द्वारा जुड़ा होता है, तो क्रिया मुख्य subject के अनुसार होती है। 'The teacher' एकवचन है, इसलिए 'was' सही है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "No sooner...than" pair — Fixed idiom को पहचानना और No improvement चुनना। समाधान का रास्ता: "No sooner...than" एक fixed idiomatic pair है। वाक्य में "than" सही जगह पर है। No improvement। Answer: (B)।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Select the option that will improve the underlined part of the given sentence. If no improvement is required, select 'No improvement'. No sooner did the bell ring _than_ the students rushed out.
  1. when
  2. No improvement
  3. then
  4. but
Solutionसमाधान
The correct idiomatic expression is 'No sooner...than'. The sentence is already correctly formed, so no improvement is required.
सही मुहावरेदार अभिव्यक्ति 'No sooner...than' है। वाक्य पहले से सही रूप में बना हुआ है, इसलिए किसी सुधार की आवश्यकता नहीं है।
