SSC CGL

Idioms

ये सबसे अधिक बार आते हैं। शरीर के अंगों का उपयोग करके बनाए गए idioms परीक्षा में बार-बार दिखते हैं।

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Cost an arm and a leg | बहुत महंगा होना | | Keep an eye on | निगरानी रखना | | Pull someone's leg | मज़ाक करना | | Give a cold shoulder | उपेक्षा करना | | Get cold feet | डर जाना, हिम्मत हारना | | Turn a blind eye | जानबूझकर अनदेखा करना | | Have butterflies in the stomach | घबराना |

श्रेणी 2: Animals पर आधारित Idioms

Animal idioms में animals का उपयोग किसी विशेष मानवीय स्थिति या गुण को दर्शाने के लिए होता है।

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Let the cat out of the bag | गलती से राज़ उजागर करना | | Kill two birds with one stone | एक साथ दो काम करना | | It's raining cats and dogs | बहुत तेज़ बारिश होना | | The last straw that broke the camel's back | वह अंतिम बात जो असहनीय हो जाए | | A wolf in sheep's clothing | दुश्मन जो दोस्त बने | | Bite the bullet | कठिन परिस्थिति को सहन करना |

श्रेणी 3: Time और Opportunity पर आधारित Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Miss the boat | अवसर चूक जाना | | Once in a blue moon | बहुत कम, शायद ही कभी | | In the nick of time | ठीक समय पर | | Bite the bullet | कठिन पल को झेलना | | A blessing in disguise | जो बुरा लगे पर अच्छा हो |

श्रेणी 4: खेल और Action पर आधारित Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | The ball is in your court | तुम्हारी बारी है निर्णय लेने की | | Hit the nail on the head | बिल्कुल सही बात कहना | | Jump on the bandwagon | लोकप्रिय चीज़ में शामिल होना | | Burn bridges | संबंध हमेशा के लिए ख़राब करना | | Go back to the drawing board | शुरू से नए सिरे से शुरू करना |

Elimination Method — परीक्षा में काम आने वाली असली तकनीक

SSC CGL में idiom questions में चारों options में से एक ही सही होता है और बाकी तीन में से कम से कम दो हमेशा शाब्दिक अर्थ के करीब होते हैं।

देखो — "Let the cat out of the bag" के options में "To release an animal from captivity" और "To free someone from a difficult situation" — ये दोनों शाब्दिक अर्थ के आसपास हैं। इन्हें पहले eliminate करो। बचे हुए दो options में से सही चुनना आसान हो जाता है।

यही है असली रणनीति: जो option शाब्दिक अर्थ के सबसे करीब हो, उसे सबसे पहले काटो।

Origin जानने का फायदा

हर idiom के पीछे एक कहानी या historical context होती है। इसे समझने से idiom का अर्थ कभी नहीं भूलता।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

eliminationशाब्दिक अर्थ वाला Option पहले काटो

जब भी idiom का प्रश्न आए, सबसे पहले उन options को eliminate करो जो idiom के शाब्दिक (literal) अर्थ के करीब हों।

उदाहरण: "Cost an arm and a leg" — options में "To cause physical injury" और "To require a lot of effort and energy" literal interpretation के करीब हैं। इन्हें तुरंत काटो। बचे दो में से "To be very expensive" और "To take a very long time" — यहाँ "expensive" अधिक extreme और unusual है, जो idiom की अतिशयोक्ति (hyperbole) की nature से मेल खाता है।

सामान्य method: चारों options पढ़ो, सोचो, 45 सेकंड। Elimination shortcut: Literal options हटाओ, 10-12 सेकंड में उत्तर।

patternAnimal + Action = Unusual Result

जब भी किसी idiom में animal का नाम हो और उसके साथ एक action हो, तो परिणाम हमेशा उस animal की उस स्थिति से जुड़ी human situation होगी — literal नहीं।

Pattern: Animal + Action → Human Situation

  • Cat out of bag → Secret revealed (बिल्ली को पकड़ना मुश्किल, राज़ छिपाना मुश्किल)
  • Raining cats and dogs → Extreme weather
  • Wolf in sheep's clothing → Hidden enemy

इस pattern को याद रखो — नया idiom भी आए तो options में से literal animal-related meanings को तुरंत हटाओ।

सामान्य method: हर animal idiom अलग याद करना — 5-7 मिनट प्रति idiom। Pattern method: एक बार pattern समझो, नए idioms में भी 3-4 options में से 2 तुरंत eliminate — 8 सेकंड।

patternTime/Opportunity Idioms में Negative Twist ढूँढो

Time और opportunity से जुड़े idioms में प्रायः एक negative element होता है — या तो कुछ छूट गया, या कुछ बहुत कम मिला, या देर हो गई।

  • "Miss the boat" → opportunity miss
  • "Once in a blue moon" → बहुत rare
  • "In the nick of time" → बमुश्किल समय पर (negative से बचे)

जब option में "very frequently," "always," "easily available" जैसे शब्द हों — उन्हें तुरंत हटाओ। Time/opportunity idioms में ऐसे positive-abundant options लगभग कभी सही नहीं होते।

Steps saved: 2 options instantly eliminate → एक प्रश्न पर 15-20 सेकंड की बचत।

substitution'Disguise/Hidden' Keywords = Positive Outcome छिपा है

जब idiom में "disguise," "hidden," "behind," या "in secret" जैसा कोई element हो, तो अर्थ में एक layer होगी — जो दिख रहा है वो नहीं, जो छिपा है वो असली है।

"A blessing in disguise" → दिखने में बुरा, असल में अच्छा। "A wolf in sheep's clothing" → दिखने में अच्छा, असल में बुरा।

इस substitution logic से: अगर "disguise" positive word के साथ है → अर्थ positive। अगर "disguise" negative word के साथ है → अर्थ negative।

Options में "hidden curse," "unexpected gift from stranger" जैसे options तुरंत गलत लगेंगे।

Comparison: बिना logic के guess — 50% accuracy। इस substitution से — 80%+ accuracy नए idioms पर भी।

patternBall/Court/Move = Decision/Responsibility

खेल से आए idioms, विशेषकर जहाँ ball, court, move, turn जैसे शब्द हों — वहाँ अर्थ हमेशा responsibility या decision-making से जुड़ा होता है।

"The ball is in your court" → अब तुम्हें decide करना है। "Your move" → तुम्हारी जिम्मेदारी।

Options में "You have won," "Stay in your area," "You are at fault" — ये सब eliminate हो जाते हैं। सिर्फ़ "decision/action/responsibility" वाला option बचता है।

Steps: 4 options → 1 सही, बिना idiom जाने भी pattern से — 3 options eliminate in 5 seconds।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

परीक्षा में idiom का प्रश्न सामने आए तो यह क्रम अपनाओ:

चरण 1 — क्या idiom पहले से पता है?

चरण 2 — Literal meaning options हटाओ। जो options idiom के शाब्दिक अर्थ के करीब हों — उन्हें काटो। आमतौर पर 1-2 options तुरंत eliminate।

चरण 3 — Category पहचानो। क्या idiom में animal है? Body part है? Time/opportunity का concept है? खेल का संदर्भ है? उस category के pattern से बचे options में से सही चुनो।

चरण 4 — अगर दो options बचे हैं। ज़्यादा unusual या extreme meaning वाला option अक्सर सही होता है — idioms अतिशयोक्ति पर आधारित होते हैं।

चरण 5 — Context sentence देखो। अगर question में idiom को sentence में use किया गया है, तो subject और situation से meaning guess करो।

यह पूरा process 20-30 seconds में होना चाहिए। 45 seconds से ज़्यादा किसी idiom पर मत रुको — mark and move on।

Option 4: "Something that seems bad at first but turns out to be good" — यही सही उत्तर है। Option 3 "hidden curse" — यह trap है, "curse" negative है, "blessing" positive है, दोनों विपरीत हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
What is the meaning of the phrase 'a blessing in disguise'?
  1. An unexpected gift received from a stranger
  2. A person who pretends to be helpful but is harmful
  3. A hidden curse that brings misfortune
  4. Something that seems bad at first but turns out to be good
Solutionसमाधान
'A blessing in disguise' refers to something that initially appears negative or unfortunate but eventually proves to be beneficial. For example, losing a job might seem bad but could lead to finding a better opportunity.
'A blessing in disguise' का अर्थ है कोई ऐसी चीज़ जो पहले बुरी लगती है लेकिन बाद में अच्छी साबित होती है। जैसे नौकरी जाना बुरा लग सकता है, लेकिन यह एक बेहतर अवसर की शुरुआत हो सकती है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Body part idiom का सबसे बेसिक और बार-बार आने वाला उदाहरण। "Arm and leg" को literally समझकर "physical injury" choose करना — यही trap है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Cost" शब्द financial context देता है। "Arm and a leg" अतिशयोक्ति है — इतनी बड़ी कीमत जैसे हाथ-पैर देने पड़े। Option A: "To be very expensive" — सीधा और सही। "Physical injury," "effort," और "time" — ये तीनों eliminate होते हैं क्योंकि "cost" का संबंध money से है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
What does the idiom 'cost an arm and a leg' mean?
  1. To be very expensive
  2. To require a lot of effort and energy
  3. To cause physical injury
  4. To take a very long time
Solutionसमाधान
'Cost an arm and a leg' is used to describe something that is extremely expensive or costs a great deal of money. It is a hyperbolic expression suggesting the price is so high it is like giving up a limb.
'Cost an arm and a leg' का अर्थ है कि कोई चीज़ बहुत महंगी है। यह एक अतिशयोक्तिपूर्ण अभिव्यक्ति है जो यह दर्शाती है कि किसी चीज़ की कीमत इतनी अधिक है जैसे उसके लिए अपना हाथ-पैर देना पड़े।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Animal idiom का classic उदाहरण। "Cat out of the bag" — literal meaning यानी बिल्ली को bag से निकालना — यही trap option के रूप में रखा जाता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Bag में बिल्ली = छिपा हुआ राज़। बिल्ली बाहर निकली = राज़ उजागर हुआ। Animal + container = secret revealed pattern। "To release an animal" literal trap है — तुरंत eliminate। "To reveal a secret accidentally" — यही सही है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
The idiom 'Let the cat out of the bag' means:
  1. To free someone from a difficult situation
  2. To create chaos and disorder
  3. To reveal a secret accidentally
  4. To announce good news publicly
Solutionसमाधान
'Let the cat out of the bag' means to accidentally reveal a secret or surprise that was meant to be kept hidden. The phrase is used when confidential information is disclosed unintentionally.
'Let the cat out of the bag' का अर्थ है अनजाने में किसी राज को उजागर कर देना। यह मुहावरा तब प्रयोग होता है जब कोई गोपनीय जानकारी अनजाने में सार्वजनिक हो जाती है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Opportunity idiom में literal interpretation का trap — "boat" को literally "harbour" और "arriving late" से जोड़ना गलत है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Miss" = चूकना। "Boat" = opportunity का symbol (जो रुकती नहीं)। Literal option "arrive late at harbour" — eliminate। "Miss an opportunity" — यही सही है। "Make a wrong decision" और "lose one's way" — ये nuance गलत हैं, यहाँ decision नहीं, timing की बात है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
What does 'Miss the boat' mean?
  1. To arrive late at the harbour
  2. To miss an opportunity
  3. To lose one's way
  4. To make a wrong decision
Solutionसमाधान
'Miss the boat' means to miss an opportunity or to be too late to take advantage of something. It suggests that someone failed to act in time and lost a chance.
'Miss the boat' का अर्थ है किसी अवसर को गँवा देना या कुछ करने में बहुत देर कर देना। यह दर्शाता है कि कोई समय पर कार्य नहीं कर पाया और मौका चूक गया।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Frequency idiom — "blue moon" को literally moon से जोड़कर "full moon night" या "specific time each month" choose करना common mistake है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Once" = एक बार। "Blue moon" = rare astronomical event। दोनों मिलकर = बहुत कम बार। "Very frequently" — opposite meaning, eliminate। "At a specific time each month" और "during full moon" — literal astronomical trap, eliminate। "Very rarely" — सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Choose the correct meaning of 'Once in a blue moon'.
  1. Very frequently
  2. At a specific time each month
  3. Very rarely
  4. During the full moon night
Solutionसमाधान
'Once in a blue moon' is used to describe something that happens very rarely or infrequently. A 'blue moon' refers to the second full moon in a calendar month, which is a rare occurrence.
'Once in a blue moon' का अर्थ है बहुत कम या शायद ही कभी। यह उन घटनाओं के लिए प्रयोग होता है जो बहुत कम बार होती हैं, जैसे एक महीने में दूसरा पूर्णिमा।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Sports-based idiom में "court" और "ball" को literally खेल से जोड़कर "you have won the game" choose करना trap है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Tennis में जब ball तुम्हारे court में हो — तुम्हें खेलना है। यानी next action तुम्हारी ज़िम्मेदारी। "You have won" — eliminate, game जीतने की बात नहीं। "Stay in your area" — literal trap, eliminate। "Responsible for someone's mistake" — nuance गलत, यह mistake नहीं बल्कि opportunity की बात है। "It is your turn to take action or make a decision" — सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
What does the idiom 'The ball is in your court' mean?
  1. You should stay in your area
  2. You have won the game
  3. It is your turn to take action or make a decision
  4. You are responsible for someone's mistake
Solutionसमाधान
'The ball is in your court' means it is now someone's turn to take the next step or make a decision. It implies that the responsibility for action has shifted to that person.
'The ball is in your court' का अर्थ है कि अब आपकी बारी है कोई निर्णय लेने या कदम उठाने की। इसका मतलब है कि जिम्मेदारी अब आप पर आ गई है।
