SSC CGL English — शब्द भंडार और शब्द अर्थ (Vocabulary & Word Meaning)

beginner 18 min read

Latin Roots:

| Root | अर्थ | उदाहरण | |------|------|---------| | apo- | away from, off | apostate, apostle, apology | | schis- | to split | schism, schizophrenia | | re- | again, back | reconcile, revoke, recede | | mal- | bad | malice, malign, malevolent | | bene- | good | benevolent, benefactor, benign | | omni- | all | omniscient, omnipotent, omnivore |

महत्वपूर्ण Greek Roots:

| Root | अर्थ | उदाहरण | |------|------|---------| | phobia | fear | glossophobia, claustrophobia | | chiar- | light | chiaroscuro | | oscuro | dark/shadow | chiaroscuro | | para- | beside/beyond | paradox, parallel, paranormal | | dox | opinion/belief | paradox, orthodox, heterodox |

SSC CGL के लिए High-Priority Word Categories

Fill in the blank और comprehension में रट्टा नहीं, logic काम आता है।

तरीका:

  1. Blank के आस-पास के words पढ़ो — tone positive है या negative?
  2. Contrast word खोजो — "but", "however", "yet", "although" के बाद विपरीत अर्थ आएगा।
  3. Support word खोजो — "and", "also", "similarly" के बाद मिलता-जुलता अर्थ आएगा।
  4. Options में elimination करो — clearly गलत हटाओ, फिर सही चुनो।

उदाहरण: "The mediator tried to ______ the two differing accounts."

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternPREFIX POWER — अर्थ का पहला संकेत

जब भी कोई अनजान शब्द दिखे, सबसे पहले prefix देखो। यह तुम्हें शब्द का tone (positive/negative/neutral) और direction बता देता है।

नकारात्मक prefixes: mal-, mis-, dis-, un-, in-, im-, ir-, anti- सकारात्मक prefixes: bene-, pro-, eu-, ambi- (दोनों तरफ) दूरी/अलगाव: apo-, ab-, de-, ex-

Micro-example: "Malevolent" — mal- (bad) + vol (wish) = बुरी इच्छा रखने वाला। अनुमान: 3 seconds। Dictionary search: 30 seconds। Speed gain: 10x।

patternPHOBIA FORMULA — Greek roots से direct answer

SSC CGL में phobia questions पैटर्न follow करते हैं: Gloss- = tongue/speech, Ago- = market/open space, Claustro- = closed, Acro- = height, Xeno- = stranger, Anth- = flower, Ergo- = work।

Micro-example: "Glossophobia" = Glossa (tongue) + phobia (fear) = public speaking का डर। अगर options में Sociophobia भी हो, याद रखो: Sociophobia = social situations का डर (speech तक सीमित नहीं)। Standard method: eliminate randomly = 50% chance। Root method: directly pinpoint = 100% certainty। Steps saved: 3-4 elimination steps।

eliminationTONE MATCHING — Fill in the Blank का fastest तरीका

Blank fill करते समय: पहले sentence का overall tone note करो (positive/negative/neutral)। फिर options को उसी tone में filter करो। इससे 2-3 options तुरंत बाहर हो जाते हैं।

Micro-example: "The ______ leader inspired millions." — Positive tone। Options: Charismatic, Tyrannical, Indifferent, Lethargic। Tyrannical/Indifferent/Lethargic = negative/neutral → बाहर। Answer: Charismatic। Standard method (सभी options check): 45 seconds। Tone method: 15 seconds। Speed gain: 3x।

substitutionSCHISM vs HERESY — Confusion Killer

patternPARADOX PATTERN — Self-contradiction + deeper truth

Paradox = ऐसा statement जो खुद से विरोधाभास करता लगे, लेकिन एक गहरी सच्चाई reveal करे। इसे Oxymoron, Axiom, और Maxim से अलग रखो।

Oxymoron = दो विरोधी शब्द एक साथ (living dead)। Axiom = स्वयंसिद्ध सत्य (self-evident truth)। Maxim = जीवन का सामान्य सत्य/कहावत। Paradox = contradicts itself YET reveals truth।

Micro-example: "Less is more" = Paradox। SSC 2025 में exactly यही distinction पूछा गया। इस frame से: elimination में 2 options तुरंत हटते हैं = 20 seconds saved।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

Vocabulary question exam hall में देखते ही यह decision tree follow करो:

Step 1 — शब्द पहचाना?

Step 2 — Root/Prefix पहचान सकते हो?

Step 3 — Fill in the Blank या Comprehension है?

Step 4 — Elimination:

Golden Rule: अगर 35 seconds में answer नहीं मिला, तो best educated guess दो और आगे बढ़ो। Vocabulary में time waste करना Quant के marks छीनता है।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह 2025 का प्रश्न religion-related vocabulary की category का है। SSC इस category से repeatedly पूछता है। 'Apostate' को non-believer समझकर गलत करने वाले बहुत थे।

समाधान का रास्ता: Prefix "apo-" = away from। "Statos" = standing/position। जो अपनी religious position से दूर चला गया = जो धर्म छोड़ दे। Non-believer (अविश्वासी) और Apostate में फर्क है — apostate ने पहले विश्वास किया था, फिर छोड़ा।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Select the most appropriate meaning of the word 'apostate'.
  1. Someone with unorthodox beliefs
  2. A person who abandons their religious faith
  3. A religious reformer
  4. A non-believer
Solutionसमाधान
An 'apostate' is specifically someone who consciously abandons or renounces their religious faith, distinguishing it from merely being a non-believer or having unorthodox views.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Schism vs Heresy confusion SSC का favorite trap है। यह प्रश्न directly organizational division पूछ रहा है, जो structural है, doctrinal नहीं।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Formal division within a religious group" = organizational split = Schism। अगर "wrong belief" होती, तो Heresy। "Formal" शब्द key है — यह structural बदलाव है। Schism सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Select the most appropriate word to describe a formal division within a religious group.
  1. Apostasy
  2. Schism
  3. Heresy
  4. Rebellion
Solutionसमाधान
A 'schism' refers to a formal split or division within a religious organization, making it the most accurate term for an organizational division as opposed to rebellion or heresy.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Fill in the blank में context reading की skill test होती है। यहाँ "mediator" और "two differing accounts" दो key clues हैं।

समाधान का रास्ता: Mediator = neutral third party जो agreement बनाए। "Differing accounts" = contradiction है। Blank का काम = contradiction खत्म करना = Reconcile। बाकी options (contradict, oppose, segregate) conflict बढ़ाते हैं, जो mediator का काम नहीं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Select the most appropriate word to fill in the blank: 'The mediator tried to ______ the two differing accounts.'
  1. Contradict
  2. Aggravate
  3. Separate
  4. Reconcile
Solutionसमाधान
'Reconcile' means to bring differing accounts or parties into agreement, which fits perfectly here. The other options either create conflict or do not resolve contradictions.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Arson एक specific legal term है जिसे Vandalism और Burglary से confuse किया जाता है। SSC की precision-testing के लिए perfect example।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Criminal act of intentionally setting fire to property" — तीन elements: (1) criminal, (2) intentional, (3) fire। Vandalism = property damage (fire नहीं)। Burglary = breaking in to steal। Sabotage = destruction for advantage (fire specific नहीं)। Arson = exactly यही definition।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Select the word that refers specifically to the criminal act of intentionally setting fire to property.
  1. Vandalism
  2. Arson
  3. Sabotage
  4. Burglary
Solutionसमाधान
Arson specifically refers to the criminal act of intentionally setting fire to property. Vandalism is damaging property without fire, burglary is breaking in to steal, and sabotage is deliberate destruction for advantage.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Phobia questions में Greek root knowledge directly काम आती है। Glossophobia को Sociophobia से अलग करना ज़रूरी है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Fear of public speaking" — Glossa = tongue/language (Greek)। Glossophobia = tongue/speech से जुड़ा डर = public speaking का डर। Sociophobia = सामाजिक स्थितियों का broader डर (public speaking तक सीमित नहीं)। Root से directly Glossophobia।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Select the word that means the fear of public speaking.
  1. Ergophobia
  2. Glossophobia
  3. Sociophobia
  4. Anthophobia
Solutionसमाधान
Glossophobia is the fear of public speaking. Sociophobia is social anxiety in general, anthophobia is fear of flowers, and ergophobia is fear of work.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Chiaroscuro एक art term है जो passage में metaphorically इस्तेमाल हुआ। Context reading और word knowledge दोनों test होती हैं।

समाधान का रास्ता: "Chiaro" = clear/light (Italian), "oscuro" = dark/shadow (Italian)। Even अगर यह art term नहीं जानते, तो roots से: light + shadow = "a blend of light and shadow"। Passage में joy और sorrow का interplay = यही blend। Answer: A blend of light and shadow।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
In the context of the passage, what does the word chiaroscuro most likely mean?
  1. A blend of light and shadow
  2. Emotional paralysis
  3. A specific type of sorrow
  4. A musical variation
Solutionसमाधान
Chiaroscuro is an art term referring to the contrast between light and dark. In the passage's context, it metaphorically represents the interplay of joy and sorrow — a blend of light and shadow.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Paradox की exact definition और उसे Axiom/Maxim से distinguish करना — यह SSC का classic vocabulary trap है।

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence में दो clues: (1) "contradicted itself" = self-contradiction, (2) "yet revealed a deeper truth" = deeper insight। Paradox = exactly यही। Axiom = self-evident accepted truth (contradiction नहीं)। Maxim = life की general कहावत। Paradox सही।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2025
Select the most appropriate option that gives the correct meaning of the underlined word in the given sentence: The statement seemed like a paradox — it contradicted itself yet revealed a deeper truth.
  1. Axiom
  2. Paradox
  3. Maxim
  4. Theorem
Solutionसमाधान
A paradox is a statement that appears self-contradictory yet reveals a deeper truth, which perfectly fits the context. Axiom and maxim refer to accepted truths, not contradictions.
