SSC CHSL के लिए प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कथन — नैरेशन का पूरा विश्लेषण

intermediate 18 min read

अवधारणा

देखो — नैरेशन का मतलब है किसी की बात को उसी के शब्दों में दोहराना (प्रत्यक्ष कथन / Direct Speech) या अपने शब्दों में रिपोर्ट करना (अप्रत्यक्ष कथन / Indirect Speech)।

प्रत्यक्ष कथन: Ram said, "I am happy." अप्रत्यक्ष कथन: Ram said that he was happy.

एक सरल उपमा लो — मान लो तुम्हारे दोस्त ने कहा "आज मेरा जन्मदिन है।" तुम अगले दिन किसी को बताते हो: "उसने कहा कि उसका जन्मदिन था।" यही रूपांतरण है — समय बदला, इसलिए verb बदली, pronoun बदला।

SSC CHSL में नैरेशन के प्रश्न दो तरह से आते हैं:

  1. Direct → Indirect (ज़्यादा)
  2. Indirect → Direct (कभी-कभी)

दोनों में तीन चीज़ें बदलती हैं — Tense, Pronoun, और Time/Place Expressions। इन तीनों पर पकड़ बनाओ, बाकी अपने आप आएगा।

एक और ज़रूरी बात: reporting verb क्या है, यह तय करता है कि conjunction कौन-सा आएगा। "said/told" के बाद "that" आता है। "asked" के बाद "if/whether/wh-word" आता है। "ordered/instructed" के बाद infinitive (to + verb) आता है।

गहन विश्लेषण

नियम 1: Tense Backshift (Tense का पीछे खिसकना)

जब reporting verb past tense में हो, तो reported clause की verb एक step पीछे जाती है:

| Direct Speech (Tense) | Indirect Speech (Tense) | |---|---| | Present Simple → | Past Simple | | Present Continuous → | Past Continuous | | Present Perfect → | Past Perfect | | Past Simple → | Past Perfect | | Past Continuous → | Past Perfect Continuous | | will → | would | | can → | could | | may → | might | | shall → | should / would |

उदाहरण:

अपवाद: Universal truth (सार्वभौमिक सत्य) में tense नहीं बदलती।

नियम 2: Pronoun Shift

Pronoun बदलाव का एक formula है — 123 Rule:

उदाहरण:

नियम 3: Time और Place Expressions

| Direct Speech | Indirect Speech | |---|---| | now | then | | today | that day | | yesterday | the previous day / the day before | | tomorrow | the next day / the following day | | last week | the previous week | | next week | the following week | | here | there | | this | that | | these | those | | ago | before |

नियम 4: वाक्य के प्रकार के अनुसार रूपांतरण

A. Assertive Sentences (साधारण कथन)

B. Interrogative Sentences (प्रश्नवाचक वाक्य)

दो उप-प्रकार:

  1. Yes/No Questions → if / whether
    • "Do you have a licence?" → He asked whether he had a licence.
  2. Wh- Questions → वही Wh-word (who, what, when, where, why, how)
    • "Who will listen?" → They wanted to know who would listen.

Reporting verb "asked" बन जाती है। Question mark हट जाता है। Word order normal हो जाती है (subject + verb, न कि verb + subject)।

C. Imperative Sentences (आदेश/अनुरोध)

| Direct Speech का अर्थ | Reporting Verb | |---|---| | आदेश (order) | ordered / instructed | | अनुरोध (request) | requested / urged | | सलाह (advice) | advised | | याद दिलाना (reminder) | reminded | | निषेध (prohibition) | warned / told not to |

Imperative verb → to + verb (infinitive) में बदल जाती है।

D. Optative Sentences (शुभकामना/इच्छा)

नियम 5: Indirect → Direct (उल्टा रूपांतरण)

यह SSC CHSL में कम आता है, पर 2023 में आया था। यहाँ:

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

pattern123 Pronoun Rule

जब भी pronoun shift confused करे, 3 steps में सोचो:

  1. क्या वह 1st person (I/we) है? → Reporting subject देखो।
  2. क्या वह 2nd person (you) है? → Reporting object देखो।
  3. क्या वह 3rd person (he/she/they) है? → मत बदलो।

उदाहरण: "He said to her, 'I love you.'" → reporting subject = he → I बनेगा he → reporting object = her → you बनेगा her → "He told her that he loved her."

Standard method: हर pronoun अलग सोचो = 4 steps, 30 seconds. यह shortcut: 2 steps, 10 seconds।

eliminationReporting Verb Decoder

Options में जब Indirect Speech sentence दिया हो और reporting verb confusing हो, तो Direct Speech में वाक्य का tone देखो:

  • Command/instruction → "ordered/instructed" (imperative + to-infinitive)
  • Reminder → "reminded" (don't forget = reminder नहीं = told not to forget)
  • Request → "requested" + to-infinitive
  • Question → "asked" + if/whether/wh-word

अगर option में "said that he march" दिखे → तुरंत eliminate करो, क्योंकि imperative के बाद "that + verb base form" नहीं, "to + verb" आता है।

यह trick 3-4 options में से 2 को 5 seconds में eliminate कर देती है।

patternTime Expression Pair याद करने का तरीका

Time expressions को PAIRS में याद करो, अकेले नहीं:

  • now ↔ then
  • today ↔ that day
  • yesterday ↔ the previous day
  • tomorrow ↔ the following day / the next day
  • next week ↔ the following week
  • last week ↔ the previous week
  • here ↔ there
  • this ↔ that

Rule: Direct Speech में "आगे की तरफ़ pointing" words → Indirect में "उस समय की तरफ़ pointing" बनते हैं।

Standard method: list रटो = 2 minutes। यह pattern = 30 seconds।

patternTense Backshift की सीढ़ी

Tense को एक सीढ़ी की तरह सोचो — हर step एक level नीचे जाती है:

Present Simple → Past Simple → Past Perfect

"is playing" → "was playing" → "had been playing"

जब Direct Speech में already Past Perfect हो, तो Indirect में वह नहीं बदलता (सबसे नीचे की सीढ़ी है)।

यह mental model 80% tense questions 8 seconds में solve करता है। Standard approach (हर tense याद करो) = 20+ seconds।

eliminationYes/No Question का if/whether चुनाव

"if" और "whether" दोनों सही हैं Yes/No questions के लिए, लेकिन:

  • "whether...or not" → ज़्यादा formal
  • "if" → ज़्यादा conversational

Indirect→Direct?

Step 2 (5 seconds): वाक्य का type पहचानो — Assertive? Interrogative? Imperative? Optative?

Step 3 (5 seconds): Reporting verb check करो। Imperative है तो "to-infinitive" होना चाहिए। Question है तो "asked + if/whether/wh-word" होना चाहिए। कोई option यहीं गलत हो जाएगा — eliminate करो।

Step 4 (5 seconds): Tense backshift check करो। Reporting verb past है? तो verb एक step पीछे गई?

Step 5 (5 seconds): Pronoun और time expression देखो।

Total: 23 seconds per question। अगर Step 3 पर 2 options eliminate हो गए, तो Step 4-5 में से एक और मिलेगा — final answer आ जाएगा।

गलत option ढूंढने का shortcut: पहले reporting verb + conjunction की जोड़ी check करो। यही सबसे common गलती होती है और सबसे पहले दिखती है।

हल किए गए PYQs

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Indirect → Direct conversion में tense वापस लाना और pronoun बदलना — दोनों एक साथ test होते हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2023
Choose the option that is the correct direct form of the sentence. Shubham said that his father was playing cricket with him.
  1. Shubham said, "My father was playing cricket with me."
  2. Shubham said, "My father played cricket with me."
  3. Shubham said, "My father had played cricket with me."
  4. Shubham said, "My father is playing cricket with me."
Solutionसमाधान
When converting indirect to direct speech, 'was playing' (past continuous in reported speech) reverts to 'is playing' (present continuous in direct speech), and 'him' becomes 'me'. The correct direct form is: 'My father is playing cricket with me.'

समाधान का रास्ता: "was playing" past continuous है → Direct में present continuous "is playing" बनेगा। "him" → "me" क्योंकि reporting subject "Shubham" है और वह खुद की बात कर रहा है (his father = my father, him = me)। Inverted commas लगाओ।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Direct → Indirect में Yes/No question, time expression ("next week"), और tense backshift — तीनों एक ही question में।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2015
I said to him, 'Do you definitely need the suit next week?'
  1. I asked him if he needed the suit the next week.
  2. I asked him if he definitely needed the suit the following week.
  3. I asked him if definitely he needed the suit the next week.
  4. I asked him if he definitely need the suit the following week.
Solutionसमाधान
In indirect speech, 'Do you' becomes 'if he', 'next week' becomes 'the following week', and the tense shifts from present to past, giving 'I asked him if he definitely needed the suit the following week.'

समाधान का रास्ता: "Do you...?" → "if he...?" (Yes/No question, 2nd person → object "him")। "need" → "needed" (present → past)। "next week" → "the following week"। Reporting verb "said to" → "asked"।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Indirect → Direct में negative imperative और सही reporting verb पहचानना।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2015
Meera's mother told her not to forget to buy the milk.
  1. Meera's mother reminded her, 'Don't forget to buy the milk'.
  2. Meera was told by her mother 'Buy the milk'.
  3. Meera's mother said to her, 'You must buy the milk'.
  4. Meera's mother said 'Remember to buy the milk'.
Solutionसमाधान
Converting indirect to direct speech: 'told her not to forget to buy' becomes a direct reminder, best expressed as 'Don't forget to buy the milk'.

समाधान का रास्ता: "told her not to forget" = reminder का pattern है। Direct Speech में यह "Don't forget to buy the milk" बनेगा। Reporting verb "reminded" सही है क्योंकि "not to forget" = याद दिलाना।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Imperative sentence में reporting verb का सही चुनाव — "instructed" vs "told" vs "asked"।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2015
The teacher said to the students, "March quietly to the ground."
  1. The teacher said to the students that they should march quietly to the ground.
  2. The teacher instructed the students that they must march quietly to the ground.
  3. The teacher instructed the students to march quietly to the ground.
  4. The teacher instructed the students that they should march quietly to the ground,
Solutionसमाधान
For imperative sentences in indirect speech, the reporting verb changes to 'instructed/ordered' and the imperative becomes an infinitive phrase. The correct form is 'instructed the students to march quietly to the ground'.

समाधान का रास्ता: "March quietly" = command/instruction है। Reporting verb → "instructed"। Imperative → "to march quietly"। Structure: instructed + object + to-infinitive।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Yes/No question में "whether" का प्रयोग, tense backshift, और pronoun shift — classic SSC pattern।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2015
The Policeman said to the driver, "Do you have a licence?"
  1. The policemen asked the driver whether he have a licence.
  2. The policemen asked the driver whether he has a licence.
  3. The policemen asked the driver whether he had a licence.
  4. The policeman asked the driver whether he had a licence.
Solutionसमाधान
Converting the direct question to indirect speech: the reporting verb becomes 'asked', the pronoun shifts to 'he', the tense changes from 'have' to 'had', and 'whether' introduces the indirect question. 'Policeman' (singular) remains singular.

समाधान का रास्ता: "Do you have...?" → "whether he had..." (you → he, क्योंकि reporting object = driver; have → had)। Reporting verb "said to" → "asked"। "Policeman" singular रहेगा।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Embedded clause में दो verbs का एक साथ backshift — "know → knew" और "is → was"।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2013
Mrs. Shankar said, "I know what it is to be depressed."
  1. Mrs. Shankar is depressed she said.
  2. Mrs. Shankar said that she was knowing what it was to be depressed.
  3. Mrs. Shankar knows what it is to be depressed.
  4. Mrs. Shankar said that she knew what it was to be depressed.
Solutionसमाधान
The reporting verb 'said' shifts 'know' to 'knew' and 'is' to 'was' in indirect speech: 'Mrs. Shankar said that she knew what it was to be depressed.'

समाधान का रास्ता: Reporting verb "said" → past। इसलिए "know" → "knew" और "is" → "was"। Pronoun "I" → "she"। दोनों verbs बदलना ज़रूरी है — सिर्फ़ एक बदलने पर गलत होगा।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "had asked" (past perfect as reporting verb) के साथ "will → would" shift और plural pronouns।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2013
"Who now," they had asked, "will listen to our troubles and protect us from the crocodiles?"
  1. They wanted to know who will listen to their troubles and protect them from the crocodiles.
  2. They had wanted to know who will now listen to their troubles and protect them from the crocodiles.
  3. They had wanted to know who would listen to their troubles and protect them from the crocodiles.
  4. They had wanted to know who then would listen to their troubles and protect them from the crocodiles.
Solutionसमाधान
'Had asked' (past perfect) requires 'would' (not 'will') in indirect speech, and pronouns shift from 'our/us' to 'their/them': 'They had wanted to know who would listen to their troubles and protect them from the crocodiles.'

समाधान का रास्ता: Reporting verb "had asked" → "had wanted to know" (wh-question के लिए)। "will" → "would"। "our" → "their", "us" → "them"। Wh-word "who" वैसा ही रहेगा।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Indirect → Direct में "the latter" जैसे formal pronoun को direct address में बदलना।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2013
Moti asked Gangu whether the latter was in his senses.
  1. "Gangu, have you lost your senses?" asked Moti.
  2. "Gangu, are you in your senses?" said Moti.
  3. "Are you senseless, Gangu?" asked Moti.
  4. "Hey Gangu, are you in your senses now?" asked Moti.
Solutionसमाधान
The indirect speech 'asked whether the latter was in his senses' converts back to direct speech as Moti asking Gangu directly: '"Gangu, are you in your senses?" said Moti.'

समाधान का रास्ता: "asked Gangu whether the latter was in his senses" → Moti सीधे Gangu से पूछ रहा है। "the latter" = Gangu = "you"। Direct: "Gangu, are you in your senses?" "was" → "are" (tense वापस आता है)।
