SSC CHSL के लिए रिक्त स्थान भरें — व्याकरण, collocations और idioms

अवधारणा

Fill in the blanks — यानी रिक्त स्थान भरना — SSC CHSL English का वह section है जहाँ तुम सबसे ज़्यादा marks बचा सकते हो, बशर्ते तुम सही angle से सोचो।

देखो — यह section असल में एक जाँच है: क्या तुम अंग्रेज़ी वाक्य के भीतर उस खाली जगह को ठीक से "feel" कर सकते हो जहाँ एक specific word फिट होती है? यह रटने का काम नहीं है। यह context-reading का काम है।

इन प्रश्नों में रिक्त स्थान पाँच प्रकार की चीज़ों से भरे जाते हैं:

  1. सही verb form / tense — जैसे 'ran' vs 'running' vs 'runned'
  2. Preposition या collocation — जैसे 'filled with' vs 'filled of'
  3. Homophone या near-homophone — जैसे 'right' vs 'write' vs 'rite'
  4. Gerund या infinitive — जैसे 'close to happening' vs 'close to happen'
  5. Idiom या fixed phrase — जैसे 'in a pickle', 'knocked out cold'

Verb Form

वाक्य में time indicator खोजो — वही तुम्हारा सबसे बड़ा सुराग है।

एक ज़रूरी बात: अंग्रेज़ी में irregular verbs की V2V_2 form रटनी पड़ती है। 'Run' → 'ran' (not 'runned' — 'runned' exist ही नहीं करता)।

SSC CHSL में homophone-based fill-in-the-blanks regularly आते हैं। तुम्हें context से तय करना है कि कौन सा word sense देता है:

| Homophone Set | अंतर | |---|---| | right / write / rite / wright | right = सही/दाहिना हाथ; write = लिखना; rite = अनुष्ठान; wright = कारीगर | | there / their / they're | there = वहाँ; their = उनका; they're = they are | | principal / principle | principal = मुख्य/प्रधानाचार्य; principle = सिद्धांत |

Trick: "a right punch" एक idiom है जिसका अर्थ है दाहिने हाथ से मारा गया ज़ोरदार घूँसा। यहाँ 'write' या 'rite' का कोई context नहीं बनता।

श्रेणी ४: Gerund vs. Infinitive — "close to" के बाद क्या आता है

यह एक बड़ा trap है। देखो:

इन दोनों को मत मिलाओ। "Close to happen" — गलत है। "About to happening" — गलत है।

इसी तरह, gerund कभी-कभी subject की तरह काम करता है:

"Robbing children of their childhood is a criminal act."

यहाँ 'robbing' gerund है जो पूरे clause का subject है। अगर तुम 'rob' (base form) लगाओ, तो sentence grammatically टूट जाता है।

श्रेणी ५: Idioms और Fixed Phrases

Idioms में literal meaning नहीं होता। इन्हें पूरे phrase की तरह याद रखो:

जब blank के आसपास idiomatic language के संकेत हों — जैसे "end up in the same ____" — तो immediately idiom की list में जाओ।

शॉर्टकट और युक्तियाँ

patternTime-Stamp Trap

जैसे ही blank दिखे, sentence में time indicator खोजो — "last year", "yesterday", "ago", "once", "currently", "at present"। यह indicator 95% मामलों में tense directly बताता है। Options पढ़ने से पहले यह करो।

मानक तरीका: चारों options पढ़ो, हर एक sentence में fit करके देखो → 40 seconds। इस shortcut से: time indicator देखो → tense तय करो → उस tense की form वाला option चुनो → 12 seconds।

eliminationEliminate the Impossible

जब verb form का blank हो, पहले grammatically impossible options हटाओ। अगर 'runned' option में है — वह invalid form है, तुरंत काटो। 'Running' अगर कोई auxiliary verb नहीं है तो काटो। इस तरह अक्सर 4 options में से 2-3 पहले 10 seconds में eliminate हो जाते हैं, फिर बचे हुए एक को confirm करना आसान है।

4 options → 2 eliminate (impossible forms) → 15 seconds vs सब options पढ़ना → 35 seconds।

patternCollocation Pair Test

Preposition blank में blank से पहले और बाद का शब्द देखो। उन दोनों को मिलाकर एक pair बनाओ और mentally check करो कि यह pair naturally सुनाई देती है या नहीं। "Filled with horror" — naturally सुनाई देता है। "Filled of horror" — अटपटा लगता है। यह "natural sound test" native-like intuition build करता है।

Standard approach (हर preposition को grammar rule से verify करना): 30 seconds। Natural sound test: 8 seconds।

patternIdiom Signal Words

कुछ signal words देखते ही idiom alert on कर दो: "end up", "in the same", "out cold", "close to", "at the end of the day", "once in a blue"। ये words अपने आप बताते हैं कि blank में एक fixed idiomatic word आएगा। Options में जो word इस idiom को complete करे, वही answer है।

Idiom signal की पहचान → सीधे correct option → 8 seconds, बजाय हर option को sentence में substitute करने के 35 seconds।

patternGerund vs Infinitive Trigger

इन prepositions/phrases के बाद हमेशा gerund (V1+ingV_1 + ing) आता है: "close to", "look forward to", "in addition to", "used to" (के अभ्यस्त होना वाले sense में), "resort to", "object to"। इन्हें एक list की तरह याद रखो। जैसे ही इनमें से कोई phrase blank से पहले दिखे — options में V1+ingV_1 + ing form चुनो। 3-step verification की ज़रूरत नहीं।

List से direct answer: 6 seconds vs grammatical analysis: 25 seconds।

तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा

Exam hall में fill-in-the-blank का सामना करते ही यह क्रम follow करो:

Step 1 — Blank का role पहचानो (5 seconds): Blank से पहले और बाद के शब्द पढ़ो। क्या blank verb है, preposition है, adjective है, या noun है?

Step 2 — Time/Context signal खोजो (5 seconds): Time indicator है? → Tense decide करो। Preposition के आसपास emotion/substance है? → Collocation check करो। "End up in", "close to", "in the same" जैसे phrases हैं? → Idiom mode on।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2024
He __________ a long distance.
  1. runned
  2. ran
  3. running
  4. run
Solutionसमाधान
'Ran' is the simple past tense of 'run', which is the correct form to use here since the sentence describes a completed action in the past. 'Runned' is not a valid English word, and 'running' would require an auxiliary verb.

समाधान का रास्ता: Sentence में कोई time indicator नहीं है, लेकिन structure "He ___ a long distance" एक completed action suggest करता है। Options में 'runned' invalid है — English में ऐसा word नहीं। 'Running' के साथ auxiliary (was/is) चाहिए जो absent है। 'Ran' simple past → correct।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Preposition collocation — "filled" के साथ कौन सा preposition आता है, यह SSC में बार-बार आता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2024
Select the most appropriate option to fill in the blank. The movie 'Desperate Ghosts' was watched by my younger brother and he was __________ horror.
  1. filled with
  2. filled of
  3. filled on
  4. filled off
Solutionसमाधान
The correct collocation is 'filled with', as we use 'filled with' to describe being overcome by an emotion such as horror. The prepositions 'of', 'on', and 'off' are not used with 'filled' in this context.

समाधान का रास्ता: Blank से पहले "was" है, बाद में "horror" है। यह emotion है। "Filled with" + emotion — यह natural collocation है। "Filled of", "filled on", "filled off" — इनमें से कोई भी standard English में प्रयोग नहीं होता। Natural sound test: "filled with horror" सही लगता है → answer: filled with।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Homophone trap — 'right', 'write', 'rite', 'wright' — यह SSC का classic distractor set है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2024
Select the most appropriate to fill in the blank. The boxer was knocked out cold by a powerful __________ punch to the jaw.
  1. right
  2. wright
  3. rite
  4. write
Solutionसमाधान
'Right' is the correct homophone here, as 'a right punch' is an idiomatic expression meaning a punch delivered with the right hand. 'Write', 'rite', and 'wright' are different words with unrelated meanings.

समाधान का रास्ता: Context — boxer, punch, jaw। "A right punch" एक idiomatic expression है जिसका अर्थ है दाहिने हाथ से दिया गया घूँसा। 'Write' = लिखना (irrelevant), 'rite' = अनुष्ठान (irrelevant), 'wright' = कारीगर (irrelevant)। Context से immediately 'right' confirm होता है।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Close to" के बाद gerund — यह grammar rule अक्सर परीक्षार्थी भूल जाते हैं।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2023
Fill in the blank with the most suitable word. A haze of panic blurred my vision; something terrible was close to ________.
  1. happening
  2. has happened
  3. happens
  4. happened
Solutionसमाधान
The phrase 'close to' is followed by a gerund (verb+ing form). 'Happening' is the correct form here, indicating that something terrible was on the verge of occurring.

समाधान का रास्ता: "Close to ___" — यह phrase gerund trigger है। Blank में V1+ingV_1 + ing form आएगी। Options में 'happening' gerund है → correct। 'Happen' (base form) → "close to happen" — grammatically wrong। Trigger word देखो → gerund चुनो → done।

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Context-based vocabulary — सही verb चुनना जो sentence के meaning के साथ fit हो।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न2022
Select the most appropriate option to fill in the blank. My grandfather was a farmer and he ______ three acres of land.
  1. advanced
  2. cultured
  3. cultivated
  4. grown
Solutionसमाधान
'Cultivated' is the correct verb to use with land, meaning to prepare and use land for growing crops. 'Grown' is not grammatically appropriate here without an auxiliary verb.

समाधान का रास्ता: Subject = grandfather (farmer), object = "three acres of land"। "Land cultivate करना" = खेती करना। यह natural collocation है। 'Grown' के साथ auxiliary verb चाहिए ("had grown" होता), यहाँ simple past चाहिए। 'Cultivated' → correct।
