SSC CHSL

beginner 18 min read

(Constant Difference)

10, 26, 50, 82, ?

(Geometric / Multiplicative)

36, 18, 54, 27, 81, ?, 121.5

(Square/Cube Pattern)

13, 14, 23, 48, 97, 178, ?

(Mixed Alternating Operations)

19, 38, 35, ?, 135, 810

Pattern: ×2, −3, ×4, −5, ×6

(Decimal Difference)

244, 232.1, 220.2, 208.3, 196.4, ?

(Wrong Term)

987, 983, 975, 963, 947, 927, 905, 875

Expected differences (pattern: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28 —

Wrong term questions में: पूरी expected series manually लिखो, फिर given series से मिलाओ।

  • D1: 16, 24, 32 → constant difference
  • D2: 8, 8 → constant है

तो D2 constant → D1 arithmetic → series quadratic है। D1 = 32+8=40, answer = 82+40=122

Standard method (trial and error): ~60 seconds। D2 method: ~20 seconds — 3 steps में।

patternOdd-Even Split (दो धारा पहचान)

  • Odd: 25, 49, 81, 121 (squares of 5,7,9,11)
  • Even: 5, 10, 20, ? (×2 pattern → 40)

6x faster।

  • ×2, −3, ×4, −5, ×6 → multipliers: 2, 4, 6 (even); subtractors: 3, 5 (odd)

Direct D1: ~10 seconds।

Step 1: Series के consecutive terms के बीच D1 (first differences) निकालो।

Step 3: Wrong term question

Previous Year Question
Select the number that can replace the question mark (?) in the following series. 10, 26, 50, 82, ?
  1. 121
  2. 101
  3. 122
  4. 169
Solution
The differences between consecutive terms are 16, 24, 32 — increasing by 8 each time. So the next difference is 40, giving 82 + 40 = 122.

Previous Year Question
Select the number that can replace the question mark (?) in the following series. 25, 5, 49, 10, 81, 20, 121, ?
  1. 30
  2. 35
  3. 25
  4. 40
Solution
The series has two interleaved patterns: 25, 49, 81, 121 (odd-position terms, perfect squares increasing) and 5, 10, 20, ? (even-position terms doubling each time: 5×2=10, 10×2=20, 20×2=40). So the answer is 40.

Even positions: 5, 10, 20, ? = ×2 pattern → 20×2=40

Previous Year Question
In the following question, select the missing number from the given series: 36, 18, 54, 27, 81, ?, 121.5
  1. 41.5
  2. 40.5
  3. 40
  4. 38
Solution
The pattern alternates: ÷2, ×3, ÷2, ×3... 36÷2=18, 18×3=54, 54÷2=27, 27×3=81, 81÷2=40.5, 40.5×3=121.5. So the missing number is 40.5.

Previous Year Question
Which of the following numbers will replace the question mark (?) in the given series? 13, 14, 23, 48, 97, 178, ?
  1. 269
  2. 259
  3. 299
  4. 278
Solution
The differences between consecutive terms are: 1, 9, 25, 49, 81 — these are squares of odd numbers (1², 3², 5², 7², 9²). The next difference should be 11² = 121. So 178 + 121 = 299.

Previous Year Question
Which of the following numbers will replace the question mark (?) in the given series? 19, 38, 35, ?, 135, 810
  1. 142
  2. 140
  3. 146
  4. 137
Solution
The pattern alternates: ×2, −3, ×4, −5, ×6... So: 19×2=38, 38−3=35, 35×4=140, 140−3=137... Actually: 19×2=38, 38−3=35, 35×4=140, 140−5=135, 135×6=810. So ? = 140.

Previous Year Question
Which of the following numbers will replace the question mark (?) in the given series? 244 232.1 220.2 208.3 196.4 ?
  1. 184.5
  2. 172.5
  3. 180.5
  4. 176.5
Solution
The series decreases by 11.9 each time: 244 − 11.9 = 232.1; 232.1 − 11.9 = 220.2; 220.2 − 11.9 = 208.3; 208.3 − 11.9 = 196.4; 196.4 − 11.9 = 184.5.

244−232.1=11.9 = constant D1 → 196.4−11.9=184.5

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Wrong term question में "expected vs given" comparison की technique — यह SSC CHSL 2025 में आया।

Previous Year Question
A series is given with one term wrong. Select the wrong term from the given alternatives. 987, 983, 975, 963, 947, 927, 905, 875
  1. 975
  2. 947
  3. 905
  4. 963
Solution
The differences between consecutive terms are: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 22, 30. The pattern should be 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28. So 963 − 16 = 947 is wrong; it should be 963 − 16 = 947 but the next difference should be 20 giving 927, then 24 giving 903 not 905. Checking: 987−4=983, 983−8=975, 975−12=963, 963−16=947 should be 963−16=947, but expected difference increases by 4 each time, so the wrong term is 947 which should be 943 (963−20=943). The wrong term is 947.
