Phrasal Verb = Verb + Preposition/Adverb मिलकर एक नया अर्थ देते हैं।
"cheer up" = खुश करना / हौसला बढ़ाना "catch up with" = किसी को पकड़ लेना, बराबरी करना "show to the door" = (किसी को बाहर का रास्ता दिखाना — यानी विदा करना या निकालना) "draw attention to" = ध्यान खींचना किसी चीज़ की ओर
SSC GD में Phrasal Verb के blank पहचानने का तरीका: वाक्य में एक जाना-पहचाना verb होगा (cheer, catch, show, draw) लेकिन अर्थ तब तक पूरा नहीं होगा जब तक उसके बाद particle न आए।
Rule: Phrasal Verb particle (up, out, in, with, to) को कभी "अंदाज़े" से मत भरो। पहले verb का context देखो, फिर पूरे वाक्य का भाव समझो।
उदाहरण:
Preposition blank पहचानने का signal: blank के एक तरफ Adjective या Verb होगा, दूसरी तरफ Noun/Gerund होगा।
Fixed Preposition collocations जो SSC GD में बार-बार आती हैं:
| Expression | Preposition | अर्थ | |---|---|---| | great / good / bad at | at | किसी काम में अच्छा/बुरा | | attention drawn to | to | ध्यान की ओर | | interested in | in | रुचि रखना | | afraid of | of | डरना | | angry with (person) | with | किसी से नाराज़ | | angry at (situation) | at | किसी बात पर नाराज़ | | guilty of | of | दोषी होना | | responsible for | for | ज़िम्मेदार होना |
Rule: Adjective + Preposition combinations रटने की ज़रूरत नहीं। बस याद रखो — अगर blank के बाईं तरफ "great / good / bad / poor / excellent" है और दाईं तरफ कोई activity या skill है, तो "at" आएगा।
Conjunction blank वाक्य के शुरू में होती है (या दो clauses के बीच में)। Signal: दोनों clauses का संबंध देखो।
विरोध (contrast) के लिए: Though / Although / Even though / Despite कारण (reason) के लिए: Because / Since / As शर्त (condition) के लिए: If / Unless / Until परिणाम (result) के लिए: So / Therefore / Hence
SSC GD trick: अगर वाक्य में दो विपरीत बातें हैं (जैसे "pompous था, फिर भी entertaining था"), तो "Though" या "Although" आएगा।
"Though pompous, he was an entertaining companion" → पहला clause negative quality है, दूसरा positive → contrast = Though
यह सबसे tricky श्रेणी है — पर SSC GD में इसके pattern fix हैं।
Subjunctive Mood (इच्छा/कल्पना): जब वाक्य में "I wish", "If only", "As if" आए, तो Present situation के लिए Past tense और specifically "were" (सभी subjects के लिए) आता है।
I wish my brother were here. — "were" गलत नहीं, यही सही है। "was" यहाँ informal है और exam में wrong option।
Past Perfect (पहले हुई बात):
Did you think you ......... somewhere before? → यहाँ "think" past में है, और "somewhere before" indicate करता है कि देखना उससे भी पहले हुआ था → "had seen me" = Past Perfect
Rule: जब past में दो events हों और पहले वाले event को express करना हो → Past Perfect (had + V3)
Pattern देखो:
जब Phrasal Verb blank हो, पहले verb का base meaning और वाक्य का भाव मिलाओ।
"cheer ........" → cheer का अर्थ है खुश करना। "up" जोड़ने से अर्थ पूरा होता है ("cheer up" = हौसला बढ़ाना)। विकल्प में "on", "out", "off" हों तो — "cheer on" = किसी को support करना (possible), पर यहाँ "patient" + "good news" → internal uplift चाहिए → "up" सही।
Standard method: सभी options try करके context fit करो → 45 सेकंड इस method: भाव देखो, verb के बाद particle का pattern याद करो → 12 सेकंड
जब blank Adjective के बाद हो:
Step 1: Adjective पहचानो (great, good, bad, poor) Step 2: अगर दाईं तरफ कोई activity/skill है → "at" लगाओ Step 3: अगर दाईं तरफ person है → "with" लगाओ Step 4: अगर दाईं तरफ चीज़/topic है → "of" या "about" check करो
"John is great ........ organizing meetings" → great + organizing (activity) → "at"
Standard method: सभी prepositions try करो → 40 सेकंड इस method: Adjective → Right side → pattern → 8 सेकंड
Subjunctive mood में "I wish / If only" के बाद हमेशा "were" आता है — चाहे subject he/she/it हो।
"I wish my brother ........ here" → "I wish" दिखा? → अगला step: क्या यह present impossible wish है? हाँ (brother यहाँ नहीं है) → "were"
"was" यहाँ trap है — informal English में लोग "was" कहते हैं, पर SSC exam में "were" सही है।
Extra steps बचते हैं: grammar rule याद होने से सीधे answer → 5 सेकंड vs. सोचते रहो → 50+ सेकंड
जब blank के बाद एक negative quality हो और main clause में positive हो (या vice versa), तो "Though" / "Although" आएगा।
"........ pompous, he was an entertaining companion" → pompous (negative) + entertaining (positive) → विरोध → "Though"
अगर "Because" या "Since" option में हो — ये cause-effect के लिए हैं, contrast के लिए नहीं। Eliminate करो।
Steps: (1) दो clauses का relation देखो (2) Contrast है? → Though/Although (3) Cause है? → Because/Since → 10 सेकंड
जब past में दो events हों:
Step 1: दोनों events को timeline पर रखो Step 2: जो event पहले हुआ → Past Perfect (had + V3) Step 3: जो बाद में हुआ → Simple Past (V2)
"Did you think you ......... somewhere before?" → "think" = बाद का event (simple past: "did think") → "somewhere before" = उससे भी पहले देखा था → "had seen me"
समाधान का रास्ता: "cheer" + context = patient को good news मिली → internal uplift → "cheer up" = हौसला बढ़ना। "cheer on" = बाहर से support (यहाँ fit नहीं)।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: "catch up with" एक fixed Phrasal Verb है जो pursuit/reaching का अर्थ देता है — police chase के context में यही आएगा।
समाधान का रास्ता: Police ने thieves को पकड़ा → thieves आगे थे, police पीछे → "catch up with" = बराबरी करके पकड़ना। "catch on" = trend बनना (गलत), "catch out" = चाल पकड़ना (गलत)।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: "show to the door" एक fixed expression है — यह SSC में idiom/phrase के रूप में आता है। Expression का अर्थ जानना ज़रूरी है।
समाधान का रास्ता: Visitor का dishonest purpose पकड़ा गया → उसे बाहर का रास्ता दिखाया → "shown to the door" = औपचारिक रूप से निकालना। Blank में "shown" + "the door" structure है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: "draw attention to" एक fixed collocation है — "to" यहाँ target/direction indicate करता है।
समाधान का रास्ता: "attention was drawn ........ the staircase" → attention किस ओर खिंची? → staircase की ओर → "drawn to"।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Subjunctive Mood का सबसे classic SSC pattern — "I wish + were"।
समाधान का रास्ता: "I wish my brother ........ here" → यह present unreal wish है (brother यहाँ नहीं है) → Subjunctive Mood → सभी subjects के साथ "were" आता है, "was" नहीं।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Past Perfect का use — past में दो events में से पहले वाले को कैसे express करें।
समाधान का रास्ता: "Did you think" → simple past (बाद की event) → "somewhere before" → उससे भी पहले देखा था → "had seen me" = Past Perfect। "have seen me" (Present Perfect) यहाँ गलत है क्योंकि context पूरी तरह past में है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Fixed Preposition collocation — "great at" SSC में सबसे common Adjective+Preposition pattern है।
समाधान का रास्ता: "John is great ........ organizing meetings" → great + activity (organizing) → "at"। "great in" या "great for" गलत हैं — fixed collocation में "great at" ही होता है।
"I wish" के बाद "was" लिखना: यह सबसे बड़ा trap है। Informal speech में "was" चलता है, पर SSC exam में Subjunctive "were" ही सही है। "I wish he was here" — गलत। "I wish he were here" — सही।
"great in" vs. "great at" confusion: "great in" एक specific context में ही आता है (जैसे "great in battle")। जब skill या activity हो, हमेशा "great at" आएगा। इसे fixed pattern की तरह याद करो।
Phrasal Verb में particle बदलना: "catch up with" और "catch on to" के अर्थ अलग हैं। Phrasal Verb की particle बदलने से पूरा अर्थ बदल जाता है। कभी अनुमान मत लगाओ — context से confirm करो।
Contrast conjunction की जगह Cause conjunction लगाना: "Though/Although" और "Because/Since" दिखने में अलग हैं, पर परीक्षा में candidates जल्दबाज़ी में "Because pompous..." लिख देते हैं। हमेशा पूछो: दोनों clauses में विरोध है या कारण?
Past Perfect की जगह Simple Past: "Did you think you saw me?" — यह grammatically weak है। SSC का pattern है कि past में दो events हों तो पहले वाले के लिए Past Perfect आएगा। "had seen me" सही है।
"show to the door" में "at" या "out of" लगाना: यह fixed expression है। "shown to the door" — इसमें preposition "to" है, बदल नहीं सकते। इसे idiom की तरह रटो, derive मत करो।
