(Direct Fact Questions)
2. निहितार्थ प्रश्न (Inference Questions)
(Main Idea Questions)
Tone vocabulary जो परीक्षा में आती है:
| Tone | अर्थ | Signal words |
|------|------|-------------|
| Analytical | तर्कसंगत विश्लेषण | "however", "yet", "while" |
Keyword pinpoint: 15 seconds। समय बचत: 75 seconds प्रति प्रश्न।
Inference और Direct Fact दोनों में परीक्षक अक्सर एक option रखता है जो passage का exact opposite कहता है। यह "attractive wrong answer" होता है क्योंकि इसमें passage के words होते हैं।
Test: हर option को पढ़ो और खुद से पूछो — "क्या passage ने यह explicitly support किया, explicitly deny किया, या कुछ नहीं कहा?" जो explicitly deny किया हो, वह confidently काटो।
उदाहरण: PMJDY passage कहता है "experts say actual figure is higher" — गलत option होगा "17.7 lakh is a definitive accurate figure।" यह directly opposite है। इसे eliminate करने में 5 seconds लगते हैं।
Standard approach (सब options carefully analyse करना): 60 seconds। Opposite trap elimination: 20 seconds।
Tone प्रश्न में हमेशा एक-दो extreme options होते हैं — "completely pessimistic", "blindly optimistic", "alarmist"। Academic passages में author कभी एकतरफा नहीं होता।
नियम: अगर passage में "however", "yet", "but" जैसे contrast words हैं, तो tone mixed होगी — analytical, balanced, या critical। Extreme options पहले काटो।
माइक्रो-उदाहरण: Urban governance passage में "functionally enfeebled" (critical) + "Pune and Surat have leveraged" (acknowledgment of positive) = tone "analytical and critical, yet balanced।" "Purely pessimistic" option गलत है।
Step count: Extreme options eliminate करने के बाद सिर्फ़ 2 options बचते हैं — decision आसान। Standard method (5 options analyse करना): 5 steps → Extreme elimination: 2-3 steps।
Inference question में सही उत्तर वह है जो passage से एक logical step आगे जाए — दो नहीं।
Test: हर inference option को ऐसे जाँचो — "अगर passage में यह fact है, तो क्या यह conclusion directly follow करता है?" अगर बीच में एक और assumption लगानी पड़े जो passage में नहीं है, वह option गलत है।
उदाहरण: Homelessness passage में "experts say actual figure is higher due to undercounting" → सही inference: "Census figure is an underestimate।" गलत inference: "Government deliberately hides the true figure" (यह assumption passage में नहीं है, too far)।
यह test 10 seconds में होती है — बिना इसके 30-40 seconds analysis में फँसते हो।
तेज़-समाधान रूपरेखा
Exam hall में यह flow follow करो:
Step 1: Questions पढ़ो और tag करो — Direct (D), Inference (I), Main Idea (M), Tone (T), Vocabulary (V)।
Step 2: Passage एक बार quickly scan करो — हर paragraph के first और last sentence ज़रूर पढ़ो।
Step 3: D-type questions पहले हल करो (keyword pinpoint method)।
Step 4: M-type questions: पहले और आखिरी paragraph देखो।
Step 5: I-type questions: Relevant paragraph जाओ, "Too Far Test" लगाओ।
Why is Mary Wollstonecraft regarded as a foundational figure in feminist theory?
- She believed women did not need education and supported traditional gender expectations
- She wrote extensively about women's rights and directly challenged the notion that women were naturally weak and inferior
- She argued that women should stay within domestic roles and avoid intellectual pursuits
- She focused only on her own experiences, without addressing the larger social issues affecting women and their treatment as mere property
Solutionसमाधान
Wollstonecraft is considered foundational because she powerfully critiqued the patriarchal system, advocated women's education, and challenged the view that women were naturally inferior to men.
समाधान का रास्ता: Question में keyword है "foundational figure in feminist theory।"
What is the central argument of Mary Wollstonecraft's A Vindication of the Rights of Woman?
- Women are by nature fit for the house and should not engage in the intellect, as the quest for knowledge would disturb the social order
- Women's education is a necessity for their active and equal participation in society, thus overthrowing the male-dominated social structure
- Women ought to recognize their inferior position as a natural obligation and therefore should not dispute the current social order
- The advancement of society is dependent on the confinement of women to domestic roles and the maintenance of the male-dominated structure
Solutionसमाधान
Wollstonecraft's central argument was that women's lack of education kept them in a secondary position, and that education was the key to enabling women's equal participation in society.
समाधान का रास्ता: "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" का central argument ढूंढना है। Passage में देखो — Wollstonecraft का मुख्य point education था, जो women को equal participation enable करता है। वह option सही है जो education को central रखे और उसके broader implication (equal participation, dismantling male-dominated structure) को connect करे।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Vocabulary in context प्रश्न SSC MTS में regularly आते हैं। "Multidirectional" जैसे शब्द का context-specific अर्थ निकालना ज़रूरी कौशल है।
What does the term 'multidirectional' mean when used to describe influence in organizational dynamics?
- Influence is shared among people so that both leaders and followers affect each other's choices and actions.
- Influence is unpredictable and tends to weaken organizational stability over time.
- Influence depends entirely on the personality of the leader rather than the responses of followers.
- Influence moves in many directions but ultimately favors the authority of the leader in formal settings.
Solutionसमाधान
The passage states that influence is multidirectional — it goes both from leaders to subordinates and from subordinates to superiors, meaning both parties affect each other.
समाधान का रास्ता: "Multidirectional" के आसपास के sentences पढ़ो। Passage कहता है influence leaders से subordinates को और subordinates से superiors को जाता है — यानी दोनों directions में। "Multidirectional" का context-meaning है shared and bidirectional influence। Dictionary meaning से मत जाओ — context से जाओ।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह Urban Homelessness passage पर आधारित inference प्रश्न है। "Which can be INFERRED" — यह शब्द देखते ही "Too Far Test" याद करो।
Urban homelessness in India is a complex phenomenon rooted not in individual failure alone but in the structural inequalities embedded within rapid and unplanned urbanisation. Millions of people migrate to cities each year in search of livelihoods, driven from rural areas by agrarian distress, lack of employment, and the erosion of traditional occupations. When these migrants arrive in cities, they frequently encounter a severe shortage of affordable housing, forcing many to take up residence on pavements, under flyovers, in railway stations, or in makeshift settlements that are perpetually vulnerable to demolition drives.
The 2011 Census estimated that approximately 17.7 lakh persons were homeless in India, though experts and civil society organisations argue that the actual figure is significantly higher due to undercounting methodology that misses many who sleep in non-conventional locations. Women and children constitute particularly vulnerable segments among the urban homeless, facing compounded risks including violence, exploitation, and lack of access to sanitation and healthcare.
Government schemes such as the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM) mandate the provision of shelters for urban homeless, requiring states to establish permanent shelters with basic amenities. However, implementation has been uneven across states, with many cities falling far short of the required shelter capacity. The allocation of public land for homeless shelters often meets resistance from local authorities and real estate interests who view such land as more profitably deployed for commercial development.
Experts argue that addressing urban homelessness requires a comprehensive strategy encompassing affordable rental housing, social security for informal workers, and ensuring land rights — rather than episodic relief measures.
Which of the following can be INFERRED from the passage about the 2011 Census data on homelessness?
- The 2011 Census used the most advanced methodology available and produced a definitive count of all homeless persons.
- The Census counted homeless persons living only in railway stations and excluded all other locations.
- The Census figure of 17.7 lakh homeless persons is likely an underestimate of the true scale of urban homelessness.
- Civil society organisations have confirmed that the Census figure of 17.7 lakh is an overestimate.
Solutionसमाधान
The passage states that 'experts and civil society organisations argue that the actual figure is significantly higher due to undercounting methodology that misses many who sleep in non-conventional locations,' directly implying the Census figure is an underestimate. Option B contradicts this by calling it definitive; Option C states civil society says it is an overestimate, which is the opposite of what the passage says; Option D wrongly attributes a specific limitation to the Census that the passage does not state.
समाधान का रास्ता: Passage कहता है experts argue actual figure is "significantly higher due to undercounting।" यहाँ से direct inference है: Census figure is an underestimate। अब other options check करो — "definitive figure" (opposite → काटो), "overestimate" (opposite → काटो), "specific limitation" (passage ने जो नहीं कहा → too far → काटो)। एक ही option बचता है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Author's tone/view प्रश्न में लेखक का position समझना पड़ता है। Climate change passage में author एक nuanced stance लेता है — यह देखना है।
Climate change is no longer a distant spectre haunting future generations; it is an immediate crisis reshaping ecosystems, economies, and human settlements in real time. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has consistently warned that limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels requires rapid, far-reaching, and unprecedented changes across all sectors of society. Yet, the gap between global commitments and actual emissions trajectories remains alarmingly wide. Developed nations, which bear the greatest historical responsibility for cumulative greenhouse gas emissions, continue to fall short of their financial pledges to developing nations — the $100 billion per year commitment made at Copenhagen in 2009 was only nominally met more than a decade later.
India occupies a peculiar position in this global discourse. As the world's third-largest emitter in absolute terms, India is simultaneously a major victim of climate impacts — extreme heat waves, erratic monsoons, and coastal flooding disproportionately affect its poorest citizens. India has pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070 and has made significant strides in renewable energy capacity, with solar installations exceeding 70 GW. However, the country's dependence on coal for over 70 percent of its electricity generation remains a structural constraint that cannot be wished away overnight.
The just transition debate — how to shift away from fossil fuels without devastating coal-dependent communities and economies — lies at the heart of climate negotiations. Technological solutions such as carbon capture and green hydrogen offer promise but remain economically unviable at scale. The urgency of the crisis demands that equity and ambition be pursued not as competing values but as complementary imperatives.
What can be inferred about the author's view on equity and ambition in climate action?
- The author believes equity and ambition should be treated as complementary goals rather than opposing ones.
- The author argues that ambition must be prioritised over equity to meet the 1.5°C target quickly.
- The author is of the view that equity concerns have made climate negotiations entirely ineffective.
- The author implies that developed nations have successfully balanced equity and ambition in their climate pledges.
Solutionसमाधान
The final sentence of the passage directly states that 'equity and ambition be pursued not as competing values but as complementary imperatives,' indicating the author's position. Choosing ambition over equity or viewing negotiations as entirely ineffective contradicts the passage's nuanced stance, and the passage clearly criticises developed nations for falling short of their pledges.
समाधान का रास्ता: Passage की आखिरी line पढ़ो — "equity and ambition be pursued not as competing values but as complementary imperatives।" यह author की explicit position है। Options में जो भी इसे "competing" बताए, वह गलत है। जो इसे "complementary" बताए, वह सही है। यहाँ passage का last sentence सीधे answer देता है — इसे never skip करो।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: PMJDY passage पर "PRIMARY criticism" प्रश्न है। "Primary" का मतलब है जो सबसे ज़्यादा emphasis के साथ mention हुई हो — side point नहीं।
The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), launched in August 2014, stands as one of the most ambitious financial inclusion drives in the world. The scheme aimed to ensure that every household in India had access to a bank account, thereby bringing millions of unbanked citizens into the formal financial system. Over the years, the programme has not merely facilitated the opening of zero-balance savings accounts but has also served as a gateway to a broad suite of financial services including insurance, pension, and credit facilities. By March 2024, more than 52 crore accounts had been opened under the scheme, a testament to its extraordinary reach.
One of the less-discussed but critically important outcomes of PMJDY has been its role in enabling Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Through DBT, government subsidies and welfare payments are transferred directly into the beneficiaries' accounts, thereby eliminating the role of middlemen who had historically siphoned off a significant portion of these funds. Studies suggest that DBT has saved the government several lakh crores of rupees by plugging leakages in the welfare delivery system.
However, critics argue that mere account ownership does not translate into meaningful financial inclusion. A substantial proportion of PMJDY accounts remain dormant, with negligible transaction activity. Financial literacy continues to lag in rural areas, and many beneficiaries lack the knowledge to leverage the full suite of services attached to their accounts. For financial inclusion to be genuinely transformative, experts recommend sustained investment in digital literacy, robust grievance redressal mechanisms, and last-mile banking connectivity.
What is the PRIMARY criticism raised against the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana in the passage?
- The scheme has failed to open the targeted number of bank accounts across rural India.
- PMJDY does not provide insurance or pension services to its account holders.
- A large number of PMJDY accounts remain inactive and account holders lack the financial literacy to utilise available services.
- DBT transfers under PMJDY have increased the role of middlemen in welfare delivery.
Solutionसमाधान
The passage explicitly states that critics argue 'mere account ownership does not translate into meaningful financial inclusion' and that 'a substantial proportion of PMJDY accounts remain dormant.' It also highlights the lack of financial literacy as a key concern. The other options contradict details stated in the passage — 52 crore accounts have been opened, DBT eliminates middlemen, and the passage mentions insurance and pension among the services offered.
समाधान का रास्ता: Critics वाला paragraph पढ़ो। Main criticism है: "mere account ownership does not translate into meaningful financial inclusion" और accounts are "dormant।" Financial literacy की कमी supporting point है। सही option वह है जो dormancy और financial literacy दोनों को cover करे। बाकी options passage के facts को contradict करते हैं (52 crore accounts खुले = success, DBT = middlemen हटे) — इन्हें eliminate करो।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Urban governance passage पर tone प्रश्न है जो analytical+critical+balanced tone को test करता है।
The governance of urban local bodies (ULBs) in India has long been characterised by a paradox: constitutionally empowered since the 74th Amendment of 1992, yet functionally enfeebled by state governments reluctant to devolve meaningful financial and administrative authority. The amendment envisaged a vibrant third tier of democracy where elected municipal representatives would exercise control over urban planning, public health, and infrastructure. In practice, however, the devolution of the 18 functions listed in the Twelfth Schedule remains partial and uneven across states. Cities like Pune and Surat have leveraged their municipal corporations' relative autonomy to deliver improved services, while hundreds of smaller ULBs languish for lack of technical capacity and funding.
Urban India is growing at an unprecedented pace, with projections suggesting that nearly 600 million people will live in cities by 2031. This demographic surge demands massive investment in water supply, sanitation, transport, and affordable housing. The Smart Cities Mission, launched in 2015, sought to address some of these gaps through competitive, project-based funding. Critics, however, contend that the Mission's focus on technology-driven solutions in select areas created 'islands of excellence' while neglecting the broader urban fabric.
Municipal finance remains the Achilles' heel of urban governance. Own-source revenues of ULBs are meagre, property tax collection is inefficient, and dependence on state and central grants fosters a culture of fiscal passivity. Strengthening ULBs requires simultaneous action on capacity building, financial autonomy, and democratic accountability — reforms that demand political will at multiple levels of government.
Which of the following best describes the author's tone throughout the passage?
- Neutral and detached, presenting facts about urban governance without any evaluative commentary.
- Optimistic and celebratory, highlighting the success of urban governance reforms in India.
- Analytical and critical, identifying systemic flaws while acknowledging some positive examples.
- Alarmist and pessimistic, suggesting that Indian cities are beyond the point of effective reform.
Solutionसमाधान
The author critically examines the gap between constitutional intent and actual practice, uses phrases like 'functionally enfeebled' and 'Achilles' heel,' yet acknowledges positive examples such as Pune and Surat — a hallmark of an analytical and critical tone. The passage is neither purely optimistic nor alarmist, and it clearly makes evaluative judgments, ruling out a neutral or detached tone.
समाधान का रास्ता: Passage में negative words देखो — "functionally enfeebled", "Achilles' heel", "partial and uneven।" Positive examples देखो — "Pune and Surat।" दोनों हैं, तो tone balanced-critical है। "Purely pessimistic" गलत (क्योंकि positive examples हैं)। "Neutral" गलत (क्योंकि evaluative language है)। "Analytical and critical, acknowledging positives" सही है।
आम गलतियाँ
-
अपना ज्ञान थोपना: अगर passage कहता है "India's defence still depends on imports" और तुम्हें पता है कि "Make in India बहुत successful है," तो भी passage का statement ही मानो। तुम्हारी general knowledge यहाँ liability है।
-
Inference को "Too Far" ले जाना: "Urban homelessness passage कहता है government schemes are uneven" → गलत inference: "Government is corrupt and insincere।" Passage ने corruption नहीं कहा — तुमने assume किया। हमेशा एक step आगे जाओ, दो नहीं।
-
Opposite trap में फँसना: Passage में "17.7 lakh is likely an underestimate" → गलत option: "17.7 lakh is a reliable definitive count।"
-
Vocabulary in context में dictionary meaning देना: "Multidirectional" का dictionary meaning अलग हो सकता है, context में meaning अलग। हमेशा उस specific sentence के context में सोचो।
