SSC MTS अंग्रेज़ी: मुहावरे और वाक्यांश — परिभाषा, पहचान और परीक्षा रणनीति

intermediate 18 min read

Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Make a fortune | बहुत अमीर बनना, अत्यधिक धन प्राप्त करना | | Born with a silver spoon | अमीर परिवार में जन्म लेना | | Break the bank | बहुत महंगा पड़ना | | Foot the bill | बिल चुकाना, खर्च उठाना |

"Make a fortune" — यहाँ "fortune" का अर्थ है विशाल धन-संपदा। "Make" यहाँ "earn/acquire" के अर्थ में है। SSC MTS 2017 में यह सीधे पूछा गया था।

श्रेणी 2: अधिकार और नियंत्रण से जुड़े Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Call the shots | निर्णय लेने की शक्ति होना, नियंत्रण में होना | | Pull the strings | पर्दे के पीछे से control करना | | Hold the reins | सत्ता या नियंत्रण अपने हाथ में रखना | | Take the helm | नेतृत्व संभालना |

"Call the shots" — यह expression shooting या billiards से आया माना जाता है जहाँ खिलाड़ी अपना अगला shot पहले declare करता था। आज इसका अर्थ है: जो व्यक्ति decisions लेता है।

श्रेणी 3: सूचना और संचार से जुड़े Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Straight from the horse's mouth | विश्वसनीय और प्रामाणिक स्रोत से सीधे सुनना | | Spill the beans | राज़ खोल देना | | Beat around the bush | मुद्दे पर सीधे न आना | | Let the cat out of the bag | गलती से रहस्य उजागर करना |

"Straight from the horse's mouth" — घोड़े की उम्र उसके दाँतों से पता चलती है। घोड़ा खरीदते वक्त सबसे विश्वसनीय जानकारी घोड़े के मुँह (दाँत) से मिलती थी, न कि seller से। इसीलिए यह expression "सबसे प्रामाणिक स्रोत से सीधी जानकारी" का अर्थ देता है।

श्रेणी 4: स्थिति और परिस्थिति से जुड़े Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Let sleeping dogs lie | जो बात सुलझ चुकी है, उसे फिर से मत छेड़ो | | Get down to brass tacks | ज़रूरी और व्यावहारिक बातों पर ध्यान देना, गंभीर होना | | Bite the bullet | कठिन परिस्थिति को साहस से झेलना | | Burn bridges | रिश्ते या संबंध हमेशा के लिए खत्म कर देना |

"Let sleeping dogs lie" — सोए हुए कुत्ते को जगाने से कोई फ़ायदा नहीं, बल्कि नुकसान ही होगा। इसीलिए यह idiom कहता है: जो परिस्थिति जैसी है, उसे वैसे ही छोड़ दो, फिर से विवाद मत खड़ा करो।

श्रेणी 5: शारीरिक अंगों से जुड़े Idioms (Body Idioms)

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | A blind spot | वह क्षेत्र जो दिखाई न दे; किसी विषय में अज्ञानता का क्षेत्र | | Turn a blind eye | जानबूझकर अनदेखा करना | | Have an eye for | किसी चीज़ की अच्छी समझ होना | | Keep an eye on | निगरानी रखना |

"A blind spot" — इसका शाब्दिक अर्थ है: दृष्टि क्षेत्र में वह बिंदु जहाँ कुछ दिखाई न दे। SSC MTS 2022 में यह literal meaning ही सही उत्तर था — यह ध्यान देने वाली बात है।

श्रेणी 6: अवमूल्यन और आलोचना से जुड़े Idioms

| Idiom | अर्थ | |---|---| | Cry down | किसी की निंदा या अवमूल्यन करना, कम आँकना | | Run down | आलोचना करना, खराब बताना | | Belittle | छोटा दिखाना |

"Cry down" — "Cry" यहाँ "shout against" के अर्थ में है। जब कोई किसी के खिलाफ ज़ोर से बोलता है, तो वह उसे depreciate कर रहा है।

SSC MTS में Idioms के प्रश्न का Pattern

परीक्षा में प्रश्न इस format में आता है:

"Select the most appropriate meaning of the given idiom: [idiom]" Option A / B / C / D

उदाहरण: "Let sleeping dogs lie" — अगर option है "to let dogs sleep peacefully" तो यह literal translation है, इसे तुरंत काटो।

Make a fortune / Break the bank / Foot the bill / Cash cow नियंत्रण परिवार: Call the shots / Pull the strings / Hold the reins / At the helm जानकारी परिवार: Straight from horse's mouth / Spill the beans / Let cat out of bag / Grapevine

जब exam में एक idiom आए, तो उसका परिवार याद आएगा और options से मिलान तेज़ होगा।

अलग-अलग याद करने पर: 200 idioms = 200 अलग facts। परिवार-ग्रुप से: 200 idioms = 20 परिवार × 10 members — recall 3× तेज़।

substitutionOrigin Story जोड़ो

जिस idiom की origin (उत्पत्ति) का कारण पता हो, वह कभी नहीं भूलती।

  • "Straight from the horse's mouth" → घोड़े के दाँत से उम्र पता चलती थी = सबसे प्रामाणिक जानकारी
  • "Let sleeping dogs lie" → सोए कुत्ते को जगाना = खतरा मोल लेना
  • "Get down to brass tacks" → कपड़े की दुकान में brass tacks से असली माप होती थी = व्यावहारिक बातों पर आना

Origin story याद होने पर options में से सही उत्तर 8 सेकंड में मिलता है बनाम बिना story के 35 सेकंड।

eliminationNegative-Positive Filter

हर idiom को एक simple label दो: Positive / Negative / Neutral।

  • "Make a fortune" → Positive
