beginner 18 min read

SP=MP×(1d100)SP = MP \times \left(1 - \frac{d}{100}\right)

(Single Discount)

SP=MPDiscount=MPd×MP100=MP×(100d100)SP = MP - \text{Discount} = MP - \frac{d \times MP}{100} = MP \times \left(\frac{100 - d}{100}\right)

MP = ₹3040, d = 20% SP=3040×80100=2432SP = 3040 \times \frac{80}{100} = ₹2432

(Successive Discounts)

SP=MP×(100d1)100×(100d2)100SP = MP \times \frac{(100 - d_1)}{100} \times \frac{(100 - d_2)}{100}

तीन क्रमिक छूटें d1d_1, d2d_2, d3d_3:

SP=MP×(100d1)100×(100d2)100×(100d3)100SP = MP \times \frac{(100 - d_1)}{100} \times \frac{(100 - d_2)}{100} \times \frac{(100 - d_3)}{100}

SP=9000×70100×80100×85100SP = 9000 \times \frac{70}{100} \times \frac{80}{100} \times \frac{85}{100} =9000×0.7×0.8×0.85=4284= 9000 \times 0.7 \times 0.8 \times 0.85 = ₹4284

(Single Equivalent Discount)

deq=d1+d2d1×d2100d_{eq} = d_1 + d_2 - \frac{d_1 \times d_2}{100}

MP=SP×100100dMP = \frac{SP \times 100}{100 - d}

PYQ): SP = ₹255, d = 15% MP=255×10085=300MP = \frac{255 \times 100}{85} = ₹300

(Mixed Problems)

CP = ₹100 मानकर:

patternMultiplier Chain Method

(0.70×0.30)=0.21(0.70 \times 0.30) = 0.21 → net discount = (10.21)×100=79%(1 - 0.21) \times 100 = 79\% — 2 steps

Standard method: 45 seconds | Shortcut: 15 seconds

Standard method: 40 seconds | Formula: 10 seconds

SP = ₹255, d = 15% → MP=255×10085MP = 255 \times \frac{100}{85}

3×100=3003 \times 100 = 300

Standard method: 30 seconds | Mental division method: 12 seconds

  • MP = (100+x)(100 + x)
  • SP = MP×(100y)100MP \times \frac{(100-y)}{100}

Standard method (fraction): 50 seconds | Substitution (CP=100): 20 seconds

Net Discount

Remaining multiplier = 0.80×0.85×0.900.80 \times 0.85 \times 0.90

0.80×0.85=0.680.80 \times 0.85 = 0.68, फिर 0.68×0.90=0.6120.68 \times 0.90 = 0.612

Net discount = 10.612=0.388=38.8%1 - 0.612 = 0.388 = 38.8\%

Standard (step-by-step SP): 60 seconds | Multiplier chain: 20 seconds

Previous Year Question
What is a single discount equivalent to two successive discounts of 10% and 15%?
  1. 26.5%
  2. 25%
  3. 23.5%
  4. 21.5%
Solution
Single equivalent discount = 10 + 15 – (10×15)/100 = 25 – 1.5 = 23.5%.

Previous Year Question
Two successive discounts of 30% and 70% are given. What will be the net discount (in percentage)?
  1. 100
  2. 63
  3. 87
  4. 79
Solution
After 30% discount on ₹100: SP = ₹70. After 70% discount on ₹70: SP = ₹21. Net discount = (100-21)% = 79%.

Previous Year Question
A printer with a marked price of ₹9,000 is offered on successive discounts of 30%, 20%, and 15%. Identify the printer's selling price.
  1. ₹4,264
  2. ₹4,250

Solution
Selling price = 9000 × (70/100) × (80/100) × (85/100) = 9000 × 0.7 × 0.8 × 0.85 = ₹4,284.

(5040×0.85=50405040×0.15=5040756=42845040 \times 0.85 = 5040 - 5040 \times 0.15 = 5040 - 756 = 4284।)

Previous Year Question
A retailer marks goods at 80% above the cost price. He then gives a discount of 30% on the marked price. What is his net profit percentage?
  1. 20%
  2. 50%
  3. 26%
  4. 36%
  1. 20%
  2. 50%
  3. 26%
  4. 36%
Solution
Let cost price = ₹100. Marked price = 100 + 80% of 100 = ₹180. After 30% discount: selling price = 180 × 0.70 = ₹126. Profit = SP − CP = 126 − 100 = ₹26. Profit percentage = (26/100) × 100 = 26%.
अंकित मूल्य = 100 + 80% of 100 = ₹180।

SP = 180×0.70=126180 \times 0.70 = ₹126।

Previous Year Question
What is the single equivalent discount for three successive discounts of 20%, 15%, and 10%?
  1. 42.2%
  2. 35%
  3. 38.8%
  4. 45%
  1. 42.2%
  2. 35%
  3. 38.8%
  4. 45%
Solution
For successive discounts, use the formula: Equivalent discount = 100 − (Price after all discounts / Original price × 100). After 20% discount: 80. After 15% on 80: 80 × 0.85 = 68. After 10% on 68: 68 × 0.90 = 61.2. Final price = 61.2% of original. Net discount = 100 − 61.2 = 38.8%.

Net discount = 10061.2=38.8%100 - 61.2 = 38.8\%। Step: 100×0.80=80100 \times 0.80 = 80, 80×0.85=6880 \times 0.85 = 68, 68×0.90=61.268 \times 0.90 = 61.2

Previous Year Question
A shopkeeper marks an article at ₹5,000. He gives successive discounts of 20%, 15%, and 10%. What is the selling price?
  1. ₹2,500
  2. ₹3,500
  3. ₹3,200
  4. ₹3,060
  1. ₹2,500
  2. ₹3,500
  3. ₹3,200
  4. ₹3,060
Solution
Selling price = 5000 × (80/100) × (85/100) × (90/100) = 5000 × 0.8 × 0.85 × 0.9 = 5000 × 0.612 = ₹3,060. Each discount reduces the previous price proportionally.
