1: "So what?" test
हर paragraph पढ़ने के बाद खुद से पूछो — "तो क्या?" अगर तुम एक वाक्य में जवाब दे सको, वह paragraph की sub-claim है। सभी sub-claims को मिलाओ — जो common thread निकले, वही केंद्रीय विचार है।
उदाहरण: renewable energy वाले गद्यांश में —
चरण 2: Options को eliminate करो — तीन traps
UPSC deliberately options को इस तरह बनाता है:
Trap 1 — Too Narrow (संकुचित): option गद्यांश के सिर्फ एक हिस्से को cover करता है। जैसे "solar energy prices fell 90%" — यह सिर्फ एक उदाहरण था, केंद्रीय विचार नहीं।
Trap 2 — Too Broad (अतिव्यापक): option गद्यांश से आगे चला जाता है — एक claim जो passage में नहीं थी। जैसे "all modern technology benefits from early adoption" — passage ने यह नहीं कहा।
Trap 3 — Contradicts the Passage
[Problem/Situation] → [Complication/Conflict] → [Author's Key Insight]
"Key Insight" ही केंद्रीय विचार है। Insecurity passage में: poverty तो problem है, लेकिन insecurity उससे भी बड़ी problem है — यही key insight है, यही answer है।
जब question में "most logical, rational and pragmatic" आए, तो answer एक balanced, actionable, moderate position होगा — extreme prescription नहीं। Climate change वाले passage में "हर State को अलग-अलग रणनीति बनानी चाहिए" — यह pragmatic है। "India can never adapt to climate change" — यह न rational है, न pragmatic।
UPSC के गद्यांश में लेखक अक्सर अपना main point अंत में रखता है — जैसे किसी argument का conclusion। पहले पूरा passage पढ़ो, फिर अंतिम 1-2 वाक्यों को दोबारा देखो। 2025 के 8 में से कम से कम 5 passages में केंद्रीय विचार अंतिम paragraph में था। उदाहरण: "Teaching has to be re-invented" — यह आखिरी वाक्य था और सही answer था।
Contrast connectors — "but", "yet", "however", "regrettably" — के बाद जो आता है, वह अक्सर author का असली point है। Renewable energy passage में "Yet this conversion of plant-based food into animal food...is far from efficient" — यहाँ "Yet" के बाद असली message था। इसे scan करना सीखो: passage में ये words underline करो, उनके बाद का clause note करो — 3 steps में केंद्रीय विचार मिल जाता है। Standard method: पूरे passage का analysis (45+ सेकंड) → Contrast-word scan (15-20 सेकंड)।
Options में extreme words देखो: "only", "always", "never", "entire", "all", "fundamental rights", "impossible"। UPSC के केंद्रीय विचार के answers शायद ही कभी इतने absolute होते हैं। जब कोई option "only possible solution" या "never be achieved" कहे — बिना सोचे eliminate करो। यह rule 2025 के हर single केंद्रीय विचार प्रश्न में काम आया। एक extreme-word वाला option identify करना: 3-4 सेकंड — यह 25% options को instantly eliminate कर देता है।
गद्यांश को एक 10-12 शब्दों के वाक्य में खुद summarize करो — फिर यह mental summary लेकर options में जाओ और देखो कौन सबसे करीब है। यह technique तब काम आती है जब सभी 4 options प्लausible लगते हों। Insecurity passage को shrink करो: "insecurity > poverty as economic problem, govt should address it" — अब options में जाओ, option D सबसे करीब है। बिना shrinking के: सभी options में confuse होना (40+ सेकंड) → Shrink करके match करना (20-25 सेकंड)।
परीक्षा-भवन में यह decision tree follow करो:
Step 1 (0-45 सेकंड): पूरा passage एक बार पढ़ो। पढ़ते समय contrast connectors (but, yet, however) और conclusion signals (this means, therefore, thus, in fact) पर mentally ध्यान दो।
"Commercial exploitation must be banned" — extreme word, eliminate करो।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Renewable energy passage में यह trap है कि solar energy का 90% सस्ती होना बहुत impressive fact है — और candidates उसी पर focus कर देते हैं। पर वह सिर्फ एक example था। असली point "timing" है।
समाधान का रास्ता: "Moving early and gradually" और "A late, more chaotic transition is costlier" — ये दो वाक्य passage का conclusion हैं। "Timing plays a crucial role" — यही केंद्रीय विचार है। Solar price fall को answer मानना "too narrow" trap में फँसना है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Climate change passage में "most logical, rational and pragmatic" वाली framing है। यहाँ extremes eliminate करो। "हर State अकेले ज़िम्मेदार है" — extreme। "India adapt नहीं कर सकता" — extreme। Correct answer moderate और actionable होगा।
समाधान का रास्ता: Passage का final line — "These various aspects need to be considered for developing clear and sustainable goals" — यह State/region-level strategy की बात कर रहा है। "Formulate effective strategies at State/region level" — यही pragmatic conclusion है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Insecurity passage में एक clear comparative structure है: "social inequality" vs "insecurity" vs "poverty"। लेखक एक ranking दे रहा है। सही answer वह ranking को correctly capture करेगा।
समाधान का रास्ता: "Insecurity, even more than poverty, is the most acutely felt economic problem" — यह passage की core claim है। "Government policies aim to reduce these insecurities" — यह उस claim का practical implication है। Option जो insecurity को poverty से ऊपर रखे और government की भूमिका बताए — वही सही है।
क्यों यह प्रश्न: Education reform passage में लेखक explicitly कहता है "Teaching has to be re-invented" — यह एक rare case है जहाँ author ने खुद अपना central message बोल दिया। फिर भी candidates इसे miss करते हैं क्योंकि options में "critical thinking" और "multidisciplinary" जैसे attractive phrases होते हैं जो sub-points हैं, central idea नहीं।
समाधान का रास्ता: "Regrettably" से passage शुरू होता है — लेखक current system का आलोचक है। "Teaching has to be re-invented" — explicit conclusion। "Classroom needs to be reimagined and teaching needs to be re-invented" — यह सही option है, बाकी sub-points या over-extensions हैं।
सबसे impressive fact को central idea मान लेना: "Solar energy 90% cheaper" या "only 16% calorie recovery" — ये striking statistics हैं, इसीलिए candidates इन्हें answer मान लेते हैं।
"Only possible solution", "always", "never" — ये लगभग हमेशा wrong हैं।
Sub-conclusion को main conclusion समझना: बड़े passages में हर paragraph का अपना mini-conclusion होता है। उसे पूरे passage का central idea मत समझो। "Firm's green innovation is path-dependent" — यह एक sub-point था, central idea नहीं।
