UPSC CSAT:

advanced 22 min read

UPSC CSAT

(Correlation vs. Causation)

2. Modus Tollens (परावर्त्य निगमन)

(Affirming the Consequent)

4. Sampling Bias (नमूना-पक्षपात)

6. Assumption पहचानना (Economist-type questions)

| Signal शब्द | क्या देखो | |---|---| | "therefore", "hence", "thus" | Conclusion की शुरुआत | | "because", "since", "as" | Premise की शुरुआत | | "assume", "presuppose" | Hidden assumption | | "after", "following" | Post hoc fallacy का संकेत | | "all", "every", "no" | Universal claim — easily weakened | | "some", "few", "many" | Particular claim — harder to attack |

जैसे ही passage पढ़ो, मन में तीन labels लगाओ: C (Conclusion) — P (Premises) — A (unstated Assumption)। Conclusion पहचानने के लिए "therefore/hence/so" ढूँढो। — वही A है।

इस method से: पहले C-P-A label करो (45 सेकंड), फिर directly A पर focus करके options eliminate करो — कुल 90 सेकंड।

patternNecessary vs. Sufficient: Affirming the Consequent को instant पकड़ो

Quick mental test: "क्या Y होने पर X guaranteed है?"

Venn Diagram: 3 circles, 30 seconds

"कोई A, B नहीं" = A और B के circles overlap नहीं करते।

अन्य options (survey timing, margin of error) tangential होते हैं।

Step 1 (15 sec): Conclusion पहचानो — "therefore/hence/thus/so" keyword या last sentence।

समाधान का रास्ता: Conclusion है "schools must provide free breakfast → better performance।"

Previous Year Question
Passage: "Studies show that children who eat breakfast perform better academically than those who skip it. Therefore, to improve academic performance, schools must provide free breakfast to all students." A critic argues this conclusion is not fully supported. Which of the following, if true, would most strengthen the critic's position?
  1. Providing free breakfast is expensive and may strain school budgets significantly.
  2. Academic performance depends on multiple factors including teacher quality and parental involvement.
  3. Some schools already provide free breakfast and have seen marginal improvements in student scores.
  4. Children who eat breakfast may already come from stable home environments that independently contribute to better academic performance, making breakfast a correlate rather than a cause.
Solution
The critic questions whether breakfast causes better performance or merely correlates with it. The strongest support for the critic is the confounding variable argument: home stability could explain both regular breakfast consumption and better performance, undermining the causal claim. The other options raise irrelevant or tangential concerns that do not directly challenge the logical basis of the conclusion.

समाधान का रास्ता: Structure check करो — "All P→Q; ¬Q; ∴ ¬P" — यह modus tollens है, देductively valid।

Previous Year Question
Read the following argument carefully: 'All countries that have achieved rapid industrialisation have experienced significant environmental degradation. Brazil has not experienced significant environmental degradation. Therefore, Brazil has not achieved rapid industrialisation.' Which one of the following best describes the logical structure of this argument?
  1. It is an invalid argument committing the fallacy of denying the antecedent.
  2. It is a valid inductive argument that generalises from particular cases to a universal conclusion.
  3. It is a valid deductive argument using modus tollens, but its second premise is factually questionable.
  4. It is an invalid argument committing the fallacy of affirming the consequent.
Solution
The argument follows the form: All P are Q; Not-Q; Therefore, Not-P. This is modus tollens (contrapositive reasoning), which is a deductively valid form. However, the second premise — that Brazil has not experienced significant environmental degradation — is empirically debatable, making the argument valid in form but unsound in practice.

Previous Year Question
Passage: 'Every reform movement that succeeded in India during the colonial period had strong grassroots support. The Swadeshi Movement had strong grassroots support. Therefore, the Swadeshi Movement succeeded.' Which one of the following correctly identifies the flaw in the above reasoning?
  1. The argument is invalid because it uses a historical example to make a universal claim.
  2. The argument is a valid syllogism and contains no logical flaw.
  3. The argument commits the fallacy of hasty generalisation by using a single movement as the basis of its conclusion.
  4. The argument commits the fallacy of affirming the consequent — grassroots support is a necessary feature of successful movements listed, not a sufficient condition for success.
Solution
The original premise is: All successful reform movements had grassroots support (If success, then grassroots support). The argument then says: Swadeshi had grassroots support, therefore it succeeded. This reverses the conditional — it affirms the consequent — which is a formal logical fallacy. Grassroots support is a necessary, not sufficient, condition for success as stated in the premise.

यह "confusion of correlation with causation" का example है।

Previous Year Question
Passage: 'In City X, crime rates fell sharply after a new police commissioner was appointed. City officials concluded that the commissioner's policies caused the reduction in crime. A criminologist, however, noted that crime had been declining nationally for the past three years due to improved economic conditions.' The criminologist's observation best serves to:
  1. Prove conclusively that the commissioner's policies had no effect whatsoever on the crime rate in City X.
  2. Suggest that the city officials have confused correlation with causation by ignoring a pre-existing national trend that offers an alternative explanation.
  3. Demonstrate that economic improvement is always a more reliable predictor of crime reduction than policing strategies.
  4. Establish that the city officials deliberately misrepresented crime data to credit the commissioner.
Solution
The criminologist does not disprove the commissioner's impact; rather, the observation introduces a plausible alternative explanation (national economic trend) that undermines the officials' claim of a direct causal link. This is a classic illustration of the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy — assuming that because B followed A, A caused B — without ruling out other explanatory factors.

समाधान का रास्ता: Economist का flow: "Subsidy → mainly upper-income buyers → not significant increase in adoption → pollution won't decrease।"

Previous Year Question
Passage: 'It is argued that if the government subsidises electric vehicles (EVs), more people will buy EVs, which will reduce air pollution. An economist counters: subsidising EVs benefits primarily upper-income buyers who can afford EVs anyway, so the subsidy will not significantly increase EV adoption among the wider population, and thus air pollution will not meaningfully decrease.' The economist's counter-argument depends on which of the following assumptions?
  1. The marginal increase in EV adoption due to the subsidy among upper-income buyers is not large enough to produce a meaningful reduction in overall air pollution.
  2. Governments should never subsidise products that are purchased primarily by upper-income groups.
  3. Electric vehicles do not actually produce lower emissions than conventional vehicles when total lifecycle emissions are considered.
  4. Air pollution is caused entirely by vehicles owned by lower-income groups who cannot afford EVs even with subsidies.
Solution
The economist's argument flows from the premise that the subsidy will not significantly increase EV adoption (because it mainly benefits those who would buy EVs anyway) to the conclusion that pollution will not meaningfully fall. For this to hold, the argument must assume that even if upper-income buyers adopt more EVs due to the subsidy, the quantum is insufficient to cause meaningful pollution reduction. The other options introduce unrelated or extreme claims not required by the economist's reasoning.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: Syllogism का यह सरल लेकिन trap-laden example है — "all ministers are dishonest" जैसे over-broad conclusions को eliminate करना ज़रूरी है।

Ministers ∩ Corrupt ≠ ∅। इसलिए वे corrupt ministers honest politicians नहीं हो सकते → "Some ministers are not honest politicians।" "All ministers dishonest" premises

Previous Year Question
Read the following statements: Statement 1: No honest politician is corrupt. Statement 2: Some ministers are corrupt. Which of the following conclusions logically follows from these two statements alone?
  1. Some ministers are not honest politicians.
  2. No minister is an honest politician.
  3. Some corrupt persons are ministers but none are politicians.
  4. All ministers are dishonest.
Solution
From Statement 1, honest politicians form a group with zero overlap with corrupt persons. Statement 2 says some ministers are corrupt. Since those corrupt ministers cannot be honest politicians (due to Statement 1), they must fall outside the honest politician category — hence 'some ministers are not honest politicians' is the valid conclusion. Broader conclusions like 'all ministers are dishonest' or 'no minister is honest' go beyond what the premises allow.

— gym members और fitness app users।

Previous Year Question
Passage: "In a survey of 1,000 urban adults, 70% said they exercise regularly. A health report concluded that urban Indians are becoming increasingly health-conscious." Which of the following most seriously undermines the validity of this conclusion?
  1. The survey was conducted online, which excluded elderly respondents who prefer offline modes.
  2. Regular exercise is not the only indicator of health-consciousness; diet and sleep also matter.
  3. Urban areas have better access to gyms and parks than rural areas, which explains the high exercise rate.
  4. The survey sampled only gym members and fitness app users, who are inherently predisposed to regular exercise, making the sample unrepresentative of the general urban population.
Solution
The critical flaw in the health report's conclusion is the sampling bias: if participants were selected from fitness-oriented platforms, the 70% figure cannot be generalised to all urban adults. This directly invalidates the inference. Option B introduces selection bias via mode of survey but is less decisive than sampling source bias. Options C and D are true but do not undermine the survey's conclusion as fundamentally as the sampling bias does.

Strongest weakener: "Discipline जैसा third factor दोनों को independently explain करे।"

Previous Year Question
Passage: 'A study found that students who sleep at least 8 hours perform better academically than those who sleep less. A school then mandated that all students must sleep at least 8 hours. The school expects academic performance to improve across the board.' Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the school's expectation?
  1. The study was conducted in a different country with a different educational system.
  2. Mandating sleep hours is difficult to enforce and monitor effectively.
  3. The correlation between sleep and performance may be driven by a third factor — such as students' overall discipline — that independently causes both adequate sleep and good academic performance.
  4. Some students naturally require less than 8 hours of sleep to function optimally.
Solution
The school assumes a causal link from sleep to performance, but the strongest weakener is that a confounding variable (e.g., overall discipline) may explain both variables simultaneously. If discipline causes both adequate sleep and good performance, mandating sleep alone will not improve performance. The other options raise concerns but do not directly attack the causal assumption underlying the expectation.
