UPSC CSAT:

intermediate 18 min read

2. व्यंग्यात्मक / विडंबनापूर्ण (Ironic / Sardonic) संकेत-शब्द: "curious inversion", "sentiment masquerading as wisdom", "our aesthetic preferences have become the arbiters", "fashionable" यहाँ लेखक सीधे नहीं कहता — वह कहता कुछ है, मतलब उल्टा होता है।

3. विवादास्पद / तर्कशील (Polemical) संकेत-शब्द: "intellectual inconsistency", "exercise in", "would do well to remember", "it is therefore" यह सबसे आक्रामक तर्क-शैली है।

5. विखंडनवादी / पुनर्परिभाषित करने वाला (Deconstructive) संकेत-शब्द: "itself an ideological stance", "conceals power", "never raw", "filtered by" लेखक किसी "neutral" या "self-evident" दावे के पीछे छुपी राजनीति उजागर करता है।

6. ऐतिहासिक-सादृश्य पर आधारित (Analogical / Historical) संकेत-शब्द: "curious amnesia", "hagiographies", "reproduce the same", historical examples लेखक इतिहास का आईना दिखाकर वर्तमान की आलोचना करता है।

उदाहरण: "Our aesthetic preferences, it seems, have become the arbiters of ecological survival." इससे साफ़ पता चलता है: tone = critical and ironic, purpose = expose distorted priorities.

जब लेखक कोई concession देता है ("they manifestly do create wealth"), तब उसके बाद जो "but" या "however" आता है — वहीं उसका असली उद्देश्य छुपा है।

उदाहरण: "The question is not whether these technologies create aggregate wealth — they manifestly do — but who bears the concentrated costs." → Purpose = distributional justice पर ध्यान दिलाना।

Standard approach (पूरा passage analyze) = 6 steps. BUT-PIVOT = 2 steps।

eliminationLoaded Word Inventory — 30 सेकंड में Tone Lock

तो Tone = Critical/Sceptical।

  • नकारात्मक charge: hijacked, decimated, insidious, masquerades, hagiographies, betrays, amnesia, conveniently
  • Ironic charge: curious, fashionable, humble, unglamorous, admirable intentions but...
  • Polemical charge: intellectual inconsistency, would do well to remember, exercise in

Formula: Purpose = लेखक जो करना चाहता है (critique, warn, deconstruct, persuade) NOT = जो topic है (climate, nuclear, conservation)

Tone = Critical and Sceptical। Purpose = expose overlooked trade-offs।

Previous Year Question
Read the following passage carefully and answer the question that follows: 'The discourse on climate policy has been hijacked by apocalyptic narratives that, while emotionally compelling, obscure the nuanced trade-offs inherent in decarbonisation. Policymakers who genuflect before the altar of net-zero by 2050 seldom interrogate whether the economic dislocations visited upon coal-dependent communities are justified by the marginal reduction in global temperature that any single nation's effort can achieve. The romanticism of renewable energy masks its own ecological footprint — rare earth mining, land-use change, and grid instability — costs that are conveniently externalised from the dominant narrative.' Which of the following best describes the author's primary purpose in this passage?
  1. To argue that climate change is a hoax perpetuated by international organisations for geopolitical gain
  2. To critique the uncritical acceptance of mainstream climate policy narratives by highlighting overlooked trade-offs and costs
  3. To provide a balanced scientific assessment of the costs and benefits of transitioning to renewable energy
  4. To advocate for the continuation of coal-based energy production as a means of protecting local employment
Solution
The author's tone is critical and sceptical — words like 'hijacked', 'genuflect', and 'romanticism' signal intellectual dissent against dominant narratives. The purpose is not to deny climate change or defend coal per se, but to expose the unexamined assumptions and hidden costs within mainstream decarbonisation advocacy. The passage does not present scientific data, ruling out a 'balanced scientific assessment'.

BUT-PIVOT: "dismantling it would be catastrophic।"

Previous Year Question
Read the following passage carefully and answer the question that follows: 'The Nobel Committee's decision to award the Peace Prize to organisations engaged in nuclear disarmament advocacy reflects a curious inversion of realist logic. In a world where nuclear deterrence has demonstrably prevented great-power war for eight decades, dismantling the architecture of mutual assured destruction is not an unambiguous moral good. The idealism that animates abolitionists is admirable in its intentions but potentially catastrophic in its consequences — for it is precisely the credibility of nuclear retaliation that restrains the aggressive ambitions of revisionist states. To celebrate the campaigners without interrogating the strategic vacuum their success would create is sentiment masquerading as wisdom.' Which of the following statements, if true, would most effectively WEAKEN the author's central argument?
  1. Historical research shows that several near-miss nuclear incidents came close to accidental launches, suggesting deterrence carries its own catastrophic risks that could negate the stability it supposedly provides
  2. Nuclear disarmament advocacy organisations receive funding from governments with conflicting geopolitical interests
  3. Many revisionist states have pursued conventional military aggression despite the existence of nuclear deterrence among major powers
  4. The Nobel Peace Prize has previously been awarded to individuals whose contributions to peace were later questioned by historians
Solution
The author's central claim is that nuclear deterrence has prevented great-power war and that dismantling it would create strategic instability. Evidence of near-miss accidents directly undermines the premise that nuclear deterrence is a stable, reliable mechanism by showing it carries its own catastrophic risk. Option B is irrelevant to the core argument; Option C partially weakens a side point; Option D is an ad hominem attacking funding rather than the argument's logic.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: यह Tone identification का classic UPSC format है — "author's attitude can best be described as।"

आखिरी वाक्य "our aesthetic preferences have become the arbiters" → Tone Lock: ironic closing = व्यंग्यात्मक उद्देश्य। Tone = Critical + Ironic।

Previous Year Question
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'Conservation efforts that centre on flagship species—the tiger, the elephant, the snow leopard—draw disproportionate public attention and donor funding, often at the cost of less glamorous but ecologically indispensable organisms. The humble dung beetle, which aerates soil and cycles nutrients, or the unglamorous vulture, which prevents the spread of disease by consuming carcasses, perform services no technology can cheaply replicate. Our aesthetic preferences, it seems, have become the arbiters of ecological survival.' The author's attitude towards current conservation priorities can best be described as:
  1. Alarmist, predicting the imminent extinction of dung beetles and vultures due to neglect
  2. Critical and ironic, highlighting how human aesthetic biases distort ecologically rational conservation choices
  3. Neutral and descriptive, offering a balanced account of different conservation strategies
  4. Appreciative, acknowledging the role of flagship species in mobilising conservation funding
Solution
The use of 'humble,' 'unglamorous,' and the ironic closing line—'our aesthetic preferences have become the arbiters of ecological survival'—reveals a critical and ironic tone. The author is not appreciative of flagship-species conservation; they are exposing its distortions. The passage is neither neutral nor alarmist about extinction—it is a critique of misplaced priorities.

BUT-PIVOT: "The question is not whether... but who bears the concentrated costs।" → Logical structure = historical analogies + distributional argument। Concession पहचानो: "they manifestly do create aggregate wealth" — लेखक anti-technology नहीं है। सही: historical analogies → caution about distributional harms।

Previous Year Question
Read the following passage carefully and answer the question that follows: 'The lionisation of disruptive technology by the commentariat betrays a curious amnesia about the historical record. The introduction of the power loom did not merely displace weavers; it decimated entire social ecosystems built around cottage industries over generations. The Green Revolution's miracle yields came at the cost of groundwater depletion, soil degradation, and the marginalisation of agricultural biodiversity that peasant communities had cultivated for millennia. Today's hagiographies of artificial intelligence reproduce the same uncritical triumphalism. The question is not whether these technologies create aggregate wealth — they manifestly do — but who bears the concentrated costs while the diffuse benefits are celebrated in quarterly earnings reports.' Which of the following most accurately captures the logical structure of the author's argument?
  1. Historical analogies of technological disruption are used to caution against accepting aggregate economic gains as sufficient justification for distributional harms
  2. The author constructs a syllogism showing that any technology celebrated by mainstream commentators must be harmful to marginalised communities
  3. A series of empirical case studies is presented to prove that technological progress invariably causes more harm than good to society
  4. Past technological failures are cited to argue that artificial intelligence should be subjected to a moratorium pending further research
Solution
The author explicitly concedes that disruptive technologies 'manifestly' create aggregate wealth, thereby rejecting a blanket anti-technology position. The logical structure is one of historical analogy used to make a distributional argument — who pays the costs versus who receives the benefits. No moratorium is advocated, and the argument is not a syllogism about commentators' endorsements being proof of harm.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: "Tone can best be described as" — यहाँ सबसे कठिन काम है "polemical" और "critical" में फर्क करना।

Loaded Words: "intellectual inconsistency", "exercise in", "would do well to remember" — ये direct attack के markers हैं, न सिर्फ criticism के।

Previous Year Question
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'Those who extol the virtues of markets in allocating resources would do well to remember that markets are not self-creating, self-regulating, self-stabilising, or self-legitimising. They require a dense web of institutions—property rights, contract enforcement, monetary systems, and social norms—that are themselves the products of collective, often political, action. To celebrate the market while deploring the state is, therefore, an exercise in intellectual inconsistency.' The tone of the passage can best be described as:
  1. Dispassionate and empirical, presenting evidence against free-market economics
  2. Polemical and corrective, aimed at exposing a logical contradiction in a widely held view
  3. Pessimistic, suggesting that neither markets nor states can effectively allocate resources
  4. Conciliatory, acknowledging the strengths of both market and state-centric approaches
Solution
The author uses charged language such as 'intellectual inconsistency' and constructs a direct logical argument against a position, which is characteristic of polemic writing. The tone is neither dispassionate nor conciliatory—the author is explicitly correcting what they see as a flawed worldview. There is no pessimism about either institution; the argument is about their interdependence.
