UPSC CSAT: संदर्भ में शब्द-अर्थ — प्रासंगिक शब्दार्थ की गहन रणनीति

intermediate 18 min read

३. विरोधाभासी संदर्भ (Contrastive context): "yet", "however", "but", "paradoxically", "rather than" — ये connectors बताते हैं कि target word पिछले विचार का उलटा है।

पाँच-चरण प्रक्रिया

चरण १ — Target word को blank करो: शब्द को मन में हटा दो। वाक्य को बिना उस शब्द के पढ़ो। अब passage का argument क्या कह रहा है?

चरण २ — Surrounding signal words खोजो: "yet", "however", "because", "so that", "until", "for" — ये connectors लॉजिकल दिशा देते हैं।

Pattern A — "Not X, but Y" structure: जब passage कहता है "it was not merely X but actively Y" — तो target word Y के concept को define करता है। Example: "not merely silenced but actively ventriloquized" — यहाँ ventriloquized का अर्थ passage खुद दे रहा है: "made to speak in a register not its own."

Pattern B — Dash के बाद की व्याख्या: 'The model was admired for its *parsimony* — it explained a vast range of market behaviours through no more than three variables.' यहाँ dash के बाद parsimony की परिभाषा है: कम variables से ज़्यादा explain करना = मितव्ययिता/simplicity।

Pattern C — Contrast connector + opposite meaning: 'each new policy framework ostensibly replacing the old, yet retaining...' यहाँ "yet retaining" बताता है कि palimpsestic का अर्थ "completely new" नहीं, बल्कि "पुराने को नए के नीचे दबाए रखना" है।

Pattern D — Tone consistency: यदि पूरा passage critical/negative tone में है और target word उस context में है — तो positive-meaning options तुरंत eliminate हो जाते हैं।

Word-Root Quick Reference

उदाहरण: 'parsimony — it explained a vast range through no more than three variables' → "parsimony" = कम साधनों से अधिक explain करना = economy/simplicity

'tendentious framing... selecting only those data points that supported a predetermined conclusion' → clearly negative

  • atavistic: atavus (पूर्वज) → पूर्वजों जैसा, ancestral → reversion to earlier form
  • autochthonous: auto (स्वयं) + chthon (भूमि) → भूमि से स्वयं उत्पन्न → indigenous/native
  • concomitant: con (साथ) + comitare (साथ जाना) → साथ-साथ घटित होना → simultaneous

यह trick अकेले answer नहीं देती — लेकिन 2-3 options eliminate करने में 10-15 seconds बचाती है।

substitutionBack-Substitution Final Check

अपना final answer passage में literally भरकर पढ़ो। पूरा paragraph अर्थपूर्ण रहना चाहिए।

'The bureaucratic apparatus... is often an [hardened into rigid form] structure that resists transformation.'

Step 3 — Connector check: नहीं → "yet", "but", "however", "for", "because" खोजो। ये logical direction देते हैं।

Step 4 — Tone check: Passage का overall tone positive/negative/neutral?

Passage का "for in stripping away complexity, it inevitably privileged certain causal narratives" — यह phrase सीधे bias की बात करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "parsimony rendered the model tendentious" — यहाँ dash के बाद: "it inevitably privileged certain causal narratives over others।" "Privileged certain narratives" = एक पक्ष को favour करना = biased। Tone-Filter: detractors = negative criticism → tendentious = negative word।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'The economist's model was admired for its *parsimony* — it explained a vast range of market behaviours through no more than three elegantly specified variables, resisting the temptation to incorporate every conceivable externality. Yet detractors noted that this very parsimony rendered the model *tendentious*, for in stripping away complexity, it inevitably privileged certain causal narratives over others.' In this passage, 'tendentious' most closely means:
  1. Excessively complex and therefore difficult to apply in practice
  2. Biased towards a particular point of view or conclusion
  3. Rigidly mathematical in structure and resistant to qualitative interpretation
  4. Tentative and provisional rather than definitive
Solutionसमाधान
Tendentious means promoting a particular cause or point of view, often to the exclusion of others. In the passage, the detractors argue that simplifying the model causes it to favour certain causal narratives — making it biased rather than neutral. The other options confuse the word with related concepts such as complexity or tentativeness, which are not its meaning.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: autochthonous एक Greek-origin शब्द है जिसे root-knowledge से solve किया जा सकता है, लेकिन passage भी पर्याप्त clue देता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "colonizer's representations of indigenous culture were subsequently received as autochthonous testimony।" — यहाँ "indigenous culture" और "autochthonous testimony" parallel में रखे गए हैं। Auto (स्वयं) + chthon (भूमि) = भूमि से उत्पन्न = native/indigenous। Back-substitution: "received as [native] testimony" — पूरी तरह coherent।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'In her landmark study on colonial linguistics, the author demonstrated how the *subaltern* was not merely silenced but actively *ventriloquized* — made to speak in a register not its own, so that the colonizer's representations of indigenous culture were subsequently received as *autochthonous* testimony. The violence lay not in erasure but in this very act of articulation.' As used in the passage, 'autochthonous' most precisely means:
  1. Originating from and native to the place being described
  2. Externally imposed upon a community without its consent
  3. Authenticated through official colonial archival records
  4. Morally authoritative by virtue of historical suffering
Solutionसमाधान
Autochthonous means indigenous or native to a particular place — literally 'sprung from the earth itself.' The passage argues that the colonizer's representations were falsely received as if they were the genuine, native voice of the indigenous community. The irony is that what was externally constructed was mistaken for authentically indigenous testimony.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: casuistry एक pejorative academic term है। Passage इसकी परिभाषा खुद देता है — यह पहचानना ही skill है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "every moral objection... was met not with reasoned rebuttal but with a labyrinthine re-framing of terms, until the original ethical concern had been so thoroughly obfuscated..." — "not reasoned rebuttal but re-framing" = reasoning जो genuine नहीं, बल्कि misleading है। यह casuistry का pejorative sense है: clever but flawed moral reasoning।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'Critics charged that the minister's speech was nothing short of *casuistry* — every moral objection to the policy was met not with reasoned rebuttal but with a labyrinthine re-framing of terms, until the original ethical concern had been so thoroughly *obfuscated* that the audience could no longer locate it within the argument.' As used in the passage, 'casuistry' most accurately refers to:
  1. The use of clever but flawed reasoning to resolve moral questions in one's own favour
  2. The deliberate refusal to engage with any moral dimension of governance
  3. A rigorous application of ethical principles to complex policy dilemmas
  4. A system of jurisprudence based on precedent rather than abstract principles
Solutionसमाधान
Casuistry originally referred to the application of moral rules to specific cases; however, it has acquired a pejorative connotation meaning sophistry or specious reasoning used to rationalize a predetermined conclusion. The passage reinforces this negative sense by describing it as obfuscating the original ethical concern rather than addressing it honestly.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: ossified एक Latin-root word है और passage इसका अर्थ surrounding context में तीन बार reinforce करता है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "resists transformation" + "tenacity in preserving existing hierarchies" + "rigidity" — तीनों phrases एक ही concept की ओर इशारा कर रहे हैं: change के प्रति कठोर प्रतिरोध। os (हड्डी) root भी confirm करता है। Option "hardened into a rigid and unchanging form" perfect back-substitution देता है।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'The bureaucratic apparatus, far from being a neutral instrument of governance, is often an *ossified* structure that resists transformation. Its tenacity in preserving existing hierarchies and procedures makes it an *implacable* opponent of reformers who seek to dismantle entrenched privilege. Yet, paradoxically, this very rigidity lends it a certain institutional *gravitas* that commands deference even from its harshest critics.' In the context of the passage, the word 'ossified' most nearly means:
  1. Swollen with excessive personnel and redundant functions
  2. Deliberately obscured to prevent public scrutiny
  3. Hardened into a rigid and unchanging form
  4. Corrupted through prolonged misuse of authority
Solutionसमाधान
The passage uses 'ossified' to describe a structure that 'resists transformation' and is characterised by 'rigidity'. 'Ossified' literally derives from the Latin for bone (os), meaning to become bone-like or hardened, and figuratively refers to something that has become rigid and resistant to change. The surrounding context — tenacity in preserving hierarchies and resisting reform — confirms that it means hardened into a rigid, unchanging form.

क्यों यह प्रश्न: concomitant एक Latin-origin word है जहाँ root और context दोनों एक साथ काम करते हैं — यह ideal practice question है।

समाधान का रास्ता: "without concomitant institutional reforms, such measures would provide only temporary relief" — यहाँ clearly कहा जा रहा है कि reforms और liberalisation को साथ-साथ होना चाहिए। con (साथ) + comitare (साथ चलना) = simultaneously occurring। "Occurring or existing simultaneously and in conjunction" = correct।

Previous Year Questionपिछले वर्ष का प्रश्न
Read the following passage and answer the question: 'The regime's sudden announcement of economic liberalisation was widely seen as *palliative* rather than curative — addressing the symptoms of fiscal distress without confronting its structural causes. Economists cautioned that without *concomitant* institutional reforms, such measures would provide only temporary relief, leaving the underlying pathologies of rent-seeking and regulatory capture entirely *intact*.' In the context of the passage, 'concomitant' most nearly means:
  1. Compensatory and designed to offset adverse effects
  2. Occurring or existing simultaneously and in conjunction
  3. Independent and separately financed
  4. Subsequent and dependent on the success of prior measures
Solutionसमाधान
'Concomitant' means naturally accompanying or associated with something — occurring alongside simultaneously. The passage argues that economic liberalisation without 'concomitant institutional reforms' will only provide temporary relief, meaning reforms that occur together with and as part of the same process. The word signals that both sets of measures must happen in parallel, not sequentially or independently.
