Questions give you two or three statements (premises) and ask you to pick which conclusion logically follows. The Air Force exam favors syllogism-style questions and coded deduction puzzles. Getting these right is about following rules, not common sense — the biggest trap is using real-world knowledge instead of pure logic.

What is Logical Deduction

Logical Deduction means drawing a conclusion that must be true based only on given statements. Nothing from outside knowledge is allowed. If the statements say 'All cats are dogs,' you must accept it as true for that question, even though it contradicts reality. The skill being tested is: given these premises, what conclusion is guaranteed — not just possible, not just likely, but certain.

Syllogism: The Four Basic Statement Types

These are the mechanical rules AFCAT setters use to build answer keys. Memorise them and apply without thinking. If both premises are negative, no conclusion follows. If both are particular (Some), no conclusion follows. If one premise is particular, the conclusion must be particular. If one premise is negative, the conclusion must be negative. The middle term (the linking word) must be distributed in at least one premise.

  • Two negatives: no conclusion. Two particulars: no conclusion.
  • One negative premise means a negative conclusion.
  • One particular premise means a particular conclusion.
  • Middle term must appear in both statements and must be fully covered in at least one.
  • All A are B + All B are C gives: All A are C. (Classic chain rule)

Complementary Pairs and Possibility Cases

AFCAT sometimes offers conclusions where neither alone follows but together they form a complementary pair. If conclusion 1 says 'Some A are B' and conclusion 2 says 'No A is B,' and neither definitely follows from the statements, then the pair together is exhaustive and one of them must be true — so the answer is 'Either 1 or 2 follows.' Possibility cases with 'may be' or 'can be' are easier: if there is no direct contradiction to the possibility in the given statements, the possibility conclusion follows.

  • Complementary pair = one says Some A are B, other says No A is B — they cover all cases.
  • Use Either-Or only when neither conclusion independently follows and they form a complementary pair.
  • Possibility conclusion follows unless the statements directly rule it out.
  • 'All A are B' does not rule out 'Some B may not be A' — so that possibility can follow.
  • Do not confuse possibility with definite conclusions — they are scored differently.

Statement-Conclusion Type (Non-Syllogism)

A second format in AFCAT gives a real-world statement (like a newspaper headline or policy fact) and asks which conclusion logically follows. Here, the conclusion must be directly inferable from the statement alone — no assumptions, no stretching. A conclusion that requires an extra step or assumption does not follow. Think of it as: could you write the conclusion using only the words and meaning of the given statement?

  • Conclusion must be a direct inference, not an assumption or opinion.
  • If the statement is about a problem, a conclusion about solving it is usually an assumption, not an inference.
  • Watch for conclusions that are too broad — if statement is specific, conclusion cannot be universal.
  • Both conclusions may follow, neither may follow, or only one — read all options before marking.
  • Common trap: a conclusion that is true in real life but not supported by the given statement alone.
