Coding-Decoding is one of the most consistently asked topics in Agniveer Army CEE Reasoning section. Expect 2-4 questions per paper, mostly direct pattern-based. The exam tests letter shifting, number-to-letter substitution, word coding, and symbol coding. Questions are usually easy to medium difficulty — a well-prepared aspirant should solve each in under 45 seconds. Missing even one due to pattern confusion is costly, so knowing all common code types is essential.
Letter Coding (Alphabet Shifting)
In this type, each letter in a word is shifted forward or backward by a fixed number of steps in the alphabet. For example, if A becomes D, B becomes E — the shift is +3. This is the most common type. Always check the shift value first by comparing one clear letter pair, then apply it to others to verify.
- Alphabet order: A=1, B=2, C=3 ... Z=26. Memorize this.
- Forward shift: CAT with +2 becomes ECV (C+2=E, A+2=C, T+2=V).
- Backward shift: CAT with -1 becomes BZS (C-1=B, A-1=Z, T-1=S). Note Z wraps to A.
- Opposite coding: A=Z, B=Y, C=X ... use formula: Code letter position = 27 minus original position.
- Sometimes only consonants or only vowels are shifted — check carefully.
- Always verify with at least 2 letters before finalizing the pattern.
Key formulas
Forward Shift
Code = Original + n (if crosses Z, wrap around: Z+1=A)
When: When code letter comes after original letter in alphabet
Backward Shift
Code = Original - n (if crosses A, wrap around: A-1=Z)
When: When code letter comes before original letter
Opposite Letter
Code position = 27 - Original position (A=Z, B=Y, C=X...)
When: When given clue like ARMY = ZNLB style coding
Worked examples
If ARMY is coded as CTOA, find shift: A+2=C, R+2=T, M+2=O, Y+2=A. Shift = +2. So NAVY = PCXA.
If CAT = ZZG, check: C(3) -> Z(26) = -3? No. C=Z means opposite coding. Z=A, Z=A... no. Try: C(3)+23=26=Z. Shift +23. A(1)+23=24=X, T(20)+23=43-26=17=Q. So CAT=ZXQ.
Number Coding
Each letter or word is replaced by a number based on a rule — could be position in alphabet, position reversed, or a math operation on position. Sometimes a full word is coded as a single number by adding all letter positions.
- A=1, B=2 ... Z=26 is the standard position coding.
- Reverse position: A=26, B=25 ... Z=1. Formula: reverse = 27 - position.
- Word value coding: add all letter positions. Example: CAT = 3+1+20 = 24.
- Sometimes position is multiplied or squared — check with the example given.
- If a word like ROAD=42, verify: R(18)+O(15)+A(1)+D(4)=38. Does not match. Try another rule.
- Always use the given example word to reverse-engineer the rule before solving.
Key formulas
Letter Position Sum
Word Code = Sum of (position of each letter A=1 to Z=26)
When: When a full word is coded as a single number
Reverse Position
Reverse value = 27 - letter position
When: When A=26 or Z=1 type pattern is visible
Worked example
If BED = 2+5+4 = 11, then find code for CAB: C=3, A=1, B=2. Code = 3+1+2 = 6.
Word/Substitution Coding
A specific word is given a code word — no alphabet shift, just a direct substitution. For example, Sky means Blue, Blue means Pink, Pink means Red. Then what is the color of sky? Answer: Blue (the code given for Sky). This type tests whether you follow the substitution chain correctly without getting confused.
- Never answer with the real-world meaning. Always follow the code chain.
- Identify what the question asks — the last substituted word is the answer.
- Example: If Sky=Blue, Blue=Green, color of sky = Blue (one step substitution only).
- Read all substitutions before answering — do not rush.
- These questions appear in Agniveer paper as 1-2 questions — easy marks if careful.
- Trap: exam may give 4-5 substitutions hoping you go one step too far.
Mixed or Symbol Coding
In this type, multiple coded sentences are given and you need to find the code for a single word by comparing sentences. Find the word that appears in exactly two sentences — its code also appears in both coded sentences. That common code is the answer.
- Technique: Find the common word between two sentences, then find common code symbol — that is the code for that word.
- This is a process of elimination — work systematically.
- Works for both symbol and number coded sentences.
- Usually 3 sentences are given — use any two that share the target word.
- Agniveer CEE rarely goes beyond 2-word decoding in this type.
- If only one sentence has the word, use process of elimination with known codes.
⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying forward shift when it is actually backward shift — always verify with 2 letters, not just 1.
- In opposite coding (A=Z), students forget that M and N are not opposites — M=N (13+14=27), which is correct, but many confuse M with itself.
- In substitution word coding, answering with real-world knowledge instead of the coded chain. Sky is blue in real life, but in the code sky may mean something else.
- Forgetting alphabet wrap-around: Z+1=A and A-1=Z. Students often stop at Z or go beyond 26.
- In mixed sentence coding, picking the common code from wrong sentence pair — always cross-verify with a third sentence if available.
🧠 Memory aids
- ABCD RULE for checking shift: Always Build Code by checking D (two) letters minimum. Never trust one letter match.
- Alphabet number trick: EJOTY = 5,10,15,20,25. Use this as anchor: E=5, J=10, O=15, T=20, Y=25. Count from nearest anchor to find any letter quickly.
- Opposite coding memory: A-Z pair up like mirror image. Think of a mirror: A sees Z, B sees Y. The pair always adds to 27.
- For substitution coding: Think of it like a game of telephone. Sky told Blue, Blue told Green. Question asks Sky, answer is what Sky said = Blue. Stop at one step only.
🎯 AGNIVEER ARMY exam tips
- Agniveer CEE typically gives 2-3 Coding-Decoding questions per paper. All are based on pattern recognition — no trick math needed.
- The most common pattern in recent Agniveer papers is +3 or -3 letter shift. Always check +3 first if code letter looks shifted forward.
- Opposite coding (A=Z, B=Y) appeared in 2022 and 2023 Agniveer papers at least once — do not skip this type.
- Time target: solve each coding question in 30-40 seconds. If pattern is not clear in 20 seconds, skip and return — do not waste time.
- Word substitution questions are the easiest guaranteed marks. Read carefully and do not overthink — one substitution step only in most Agniveer questions.
