Types of Families

A family is the first social unit a child experiences. NCERT EVS introduces different family structures so children understand that families come in many forms and all are equally valid. CTET often asks teachers to identify which type of family a described situation belongs to, or which pedagogy helps children appreciate diversity in family structures.

• Nuclear family: parents and their children only — small, most common in cities
• Joint/Extended family: grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins living together — common in rural India

Children learn that their environment includes neighbours, shopkeepers, doctors, cobblers, farmers etc. CTET tests this by asking how teachers can help children connect classroom learning to their local community — this is the heart of EVS pedagogy.

• Community helpers: postman, policeman, farmer, carpenter, tailor, doctor, sanitation worker

Pedagogy for Teaching Family and Friends

CTET Paper I tests pedagogy more than content. For Family and Friends, the key pedagogical approach is experiential, child-centred, and inclusive. Teachers use stories, role play, drawing, family trees, and community visits. Questions often show a classroom scenario and ask which teacher response is best.
