Why this topic matters · 8 min read
Culture is a consistent scorer in SSC CHSL GK section. Expect 2-4 direct questions per paper covering classical dance forms, musical instruments, UNESCO heritage sites, folk arts, and ancient architecture styles. Questions are usually factual and direct — one correct name or place is all that separates you. Memorising state-wise associations and UNESCO listings gives you almost certain marks here.
Classical Dance Forms of India
India has 8 officially recognised classical dance forms under the Sangeet Natak Akademi. Each belongs to a specific state and has a distinct style and scripture. SSC loves asking which dance belongs to which state, or which text governs it. The root text for most classical dances is the Natyashastra written by Bharata Muni.
- Bharatanatyam — Tamil Nadu (oldest, fire-like movements)
- Kathak — Uttar Pradesh (storytelling, Mughal influence, ghungroo-heavy)
- Odissi — Odisha (lyrical, tribhanga posture, from Jagannath temple tradition)
- Kuchipudi — Andhra Pradesh (drama + dance, uses brass plate dance)
- Manipuri — Manipur (soft, circular, Vaishnavite theme, no heavy footwork)
- Mohiniyattam — Kerala (feminine grace, white-gold costume)
- Kathakali — Kerala (elaborate makeup, male performers traditionally)
- Sattriya — Assam (introduced by Srimanta Sankardeva, newest to the list)
Folk Dances: State-wise Key Pairs
Folk dances are state-specific and SSC frequently tests the pairing. Unlike classical dances, folk dances are community celebrations — harvest, festivals, weddings. Remember the state each belongs to and you will not lose marks.
- Garba and Dandiya — Gujarat
- Bhangra (men) and Giddha (women) — Punjab
- Bihu — Assam (harvest festival dance)
- Lavani — Maharashtra (energetic, Dholki-based)
- Ghoomar — Rajasthan (women, circular movement)
- Chhau — Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal (martial art + dance, mask-based)
Indian Music: Hindustani vs Carnatic
Indian classical music has two main streams. Hindustani is North Indian, influenced by Persian and Mughal traditions. Carnatic is South Indian, purer Sanskrit base. SSC asks about instruments, gharanas, and legendary artists. Key concept: Raga is the melody framework, Tala is the rhythm cycle.
- Hindustani music: Sitar, Sarod, Tabla, Sarangi, Bansuri
- Carnatic music: Veena, Mridangam, Violin, Ghatam
- Sitar — Amir Khusro is credited as originator; Ravi Shankar made it world-famous
- Tabla — paired drums; primary rhythm in Hindustani concerts
- Gharana = school of music training (e.g., Jaipur Gharana, Kirana Gharana)
- Tansen — Navratna of Akbar's court, greatest Hindustani vocalist in history
Temple Architecture: Three Main Styles
Indian temple architecture is classified into three styles based on geography. SSC asks which style a famous temple belongs to, or what the shikhara of each style looks like. A simple north-south split helps here.
- Nagara style — North India, curvilinear shikhara (tower), e.g., Khajuraho, Lingaraja (Bhubaneswar)
- Dravida style — South India, pyramidal gopuram (gateway tower), e.g., Brihadeeswara Temple Thanjavur
- Vesara style — Deccan region, mix of Nagara and Dravida, e.g., Chalukya temples at Aihole and Badami
- Gopuram = massive entrance tower in Dravidian temples
- Shikhara = the main tower over the sanctum in Nagara temples
- Brihadeeswara Temple built by Raja Raja Chola I — UNESCO World Heritage Site
UNESCO World Heritage Sites in India
India currently has 42 UNESCO World Heritage Sites (as of 2024). SSC CHSL regularly tests which site is in which state and why it got listed. Hoysala temples were inscribed in 2023 — high chance of appearing in recent papers. Divide sites into Cultural and Natural categories.
- Taj Mahal — Agra, Uttar Pradesh (Cultural)
- Ajanta and Ellora Caves — Maharashtra (Cultural, Buddhist and Hindu rock-cut)
- Kaziranga National Park — Assam (Natural, one-horned rhino)
- Sundarbans — West Bengal (Natural, mangrove and Bengal tiger)
- Hoysala temples — Karnataka, inscribed 2023 (Belur, Halebidu, Somnathapura)
- Sanchi Stupa — Madhya Pradesh (Buddhist, built by Ashoka)
Painting Styles and Crafts
India's regional painting traditions are a favourite in SSC. Each style has a unique material, theme, and state. Remember the style by the feel: Madhubani is earthy Bihar village art, Warli is tribal Maharashtra, Pattachitra is detailed Odisha scroll art.
- Madhubani (Mithila) painting — Bihar, natural colours, geometric patterns
- Warli painting — Maharashtra, tribal white-on-red, circle-triangle figures
- Pattachitra — Odisha, cloth scroll, Jagannath themes
- Tanjore painting — Tamil Nadu, gold foil + jewels on wood, deity themes
- Phad painting — Rajasthan, cloth scroll, Pabuji folk god stories
- Miniature painting — Rajput and Mughal courts, detailed figurative work
Important Cultural Institutions
These are direct one-liner facts that SSC loves in GK. Know the full name, where it is located, and what it does. These appear as fill-in-the-blank type questions.
- Sangeet Natak Akademi — New Delhi, governs performing arts, awards classical artists
- Lalit Kala Akademi — New Delhi, promotes visual arts and painting
- Sahitya Akademi — New Delhi, promotes literature across Indian languages
- National School of Drama (NSD) — New Delhi, premier theatre training institute
- IGNCA (Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts) — New Delhi, cultural research
- All three Akademis were established in 1954
⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing Kathakali and Mohiniyattam — both are from Kerala but Kathakali is dramatic with heavy makeup and traditionally male, Mohiniyattam is graceful and feminine
- Mixing up Odissi (Odisha) with Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu) — both are ancient temple dance forms but belong to different states
- Thinking Bhangra is also performed by women — Bhangra is men, Giddha is women, both from Punjab
- Assuming Nagara style has a gopuram — it does NOT. Gopuram belongs to Dravida (South Indian) style only
- Forgetting that Sattriya from Assam was added last to the classical dance list (in 2000) — SSC has asked this recently
🧠 Memory aids
- For 8 Classical Dances use: B-KOM-KMS — Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Manipuri, Kuchipudi, Mohiniyattam, Sattriya — and K for Kathakali
- Nagara vs Dravida: North India = curvy N (like the curved shikhara). South India = Straight pyramid D (like gopuram going up in steps)
- Three Akademis: SLS in 1954 — Sangeet, Lalit, Sahitya. All start in 1954, all in Delhi
- For folk dances think HOME STATES: Garba=Gujarat, Bihu=Assam, Ghoomar=Rajasthan, Lavani=Maharashtra — visualise each state on map
🎯 SSC CHSL exam tips
- In CHSL 2023-24 papers, questions on classical dance state pairing and UNESCO sites appeared in almost every shift — treat these as guaranteed marks
- Questions on painting styles (Madhubani, Warli, Pattachitra) are becoming more frequent — one question per paper is common now
- Temple architecture questions focus on naming the style from a temple name — learn at least 2 famous temples per style
- UNESCO inscriptions from 2022-2024 (Hoysala temples, Dholavira in 2021) are high-probability topics since they are recent
- Avoid overthinking — Culture GK in CHSL is almost always direct factual. No interpretation needed. Speed and accuracy matter more than deep understanding
