Why this topic matters · 9 min read
History is one of the most rewarding GK topics in SSC CHSL. Expect 3 to 5 direct questions per shift, mostly from Medieval India (Delhi Sultanate, Mughals) and Modern India (1857 onwards, freedom struggle). Ancient India gets 1 to 2 questions. Questions are factual and direct — who founded what, which battle happened when, which act was passed in which year. Memorising key names, dates, and firsts gives you almost guaranteed marks here.

Ancient India — Key Dynasties and Facts

Ancient India covers Indus Valley Civilisation, Vedic Age, Mauryas, Guptas, and Sangam period. SSC CHSL typically picks one or two facts from this era — usually about Ashoka, Chandragupta Maurya, or the Gupta golden age. Focus on who is called what (titles and epithets) and which dynasty built which monument or text.

  • Indus Valley Civilisation: Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro, Dockyard at Lothal, no iron tools found.
  • Chandragupta Maurya founded the Maurya Empire; Kautilya (Chanakya) wrote Arthashastra.
  • Ashoka fought the Kalinga War (261 BC), then embraced Buddhism; his edicts are on pillars and rocks.
  • Gupta Age called the Golden Age — Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya), Kalidasa, Aryabhatta all belong here.
  • Sangam literature from South India — Purananuru, Silappatikaram — belongs to early Tamil culture.
  • Nalanda University: founded by Kumaragupta I, major Buddhist learning centre.

Medieval India — Sultanate and Mughal Period

This is the highest-frequency zone in SSC CHSL GK. The Delhi Sultanate (1206 to 1526) has five dynasties — remember them in order. The Mughal period (1526 to 1857) is tested on battles, policies, and architecture. Know which Mughal emperor did what — this is asked every single year in some form.

  • Delhi Sultanate five dynasties in order: Slave, Khilji, Tughlaq, Sayyid, Lodi. Mnemonic: Silly Kings Tackle Small Lions.
  • Qutub Minar construction started by Qutub-ud-din Aibak, completed by Iltutmish.
  • Alauddin Khilji: market reforms, first to use standing army, repelled Mongol invasions.
  • Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi in First Battle of Panipat (1526) — started Mughal rule.
  • Akbar's Navratnas include Birbal, Todar Mal, Abul Fazl, Tansen. Din-i-Ilahi was his new faith.
  • Shah Jahan built Taj Mahal; Aurangzeb imposed Jizya tax and had a policy of religious intolerance.
  • Shivaji founded the Maratha Empire; Chhatrapati title, used guerrilla warfare (Ganimi Kawa).

Modern India — Colonial Period and Key Acts

Modern India starts with European arrival and picks up pace with British rule. SSC CHSL loves questions on the Revolt of 1857, important Acts, Governors-General, and Viceroys. Know which Lord did which reform — this is very high yield. Also know the chronology of the freedom struggle milestones.

  • 1757 Battle of Plassey: Clive defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah — British control over Bengal began.
  • 1857 Revolt: called Sepoy Mutiny by British, First War of Independence by Indians. Started at Meerut on May 10.
  • Lord Dalhousie: Doctrine of Lapse, Railways introduced (1853), Telegraph, Post Office Act.
  • Lord Curzon: Partition of Bengal (1905) — sparked Swadeshi Movement.
  • Morley-Minto Reforms 1909: introduced separate electorates for Muslims — communal division seed.
  • Rowlatt Act 1919: no appeal, no lawyer — called Black Act. Led to Jallianwala Bagh massacre (April 13, 1919).
  • Government of India Act 1935: most detailed act, basis of Indian Constitution, introduced provincial autonomy.

Freedom Struggle — Movements and Leaders

The independence movement is the most emotionally loaded and heavily tested section. Questions focus on which movement happened in which year, who gave which slogan, and who was associated with which organisation. Gandhi, Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh — know their key acts and statements.

  • INC founded 1885 by A O Hume in Bombay. First session presided by W C Bonnerjee.
  • Non-Cooperation Movement 1920: Gandhi called off after Chauri Chaura violence (1922).
  • Civil Disobedience Movement 1930: Dandi March (March 12 to April 6, 1930), salt law broken.
  • Quit India Movement 1942: Do or Die slogan by Gandhi. August 8, 1942 launch.
  • Subhas Chandra Bose: formed INA (Azad Hind Fauj), slogan Give me blood I will give you freedom.
  • Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev hanged on March 23, 1931 — Shaheed Diwas.
  • India got independence on August 15, 1947. Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy.

Important Firsts and Epithets

SSC CHSL frequently asks who was the first, who is called the Father of something, or who earned a particular title. These are direct one-liner questions that take 10 seconds to answer if you have memorised them.

  • Father of Indian Constitution: B R Ambedkar. Father of Indian Renaissance: Raja Ram Mohan Roy.
  • First Governor-General of India: Warren Hastings. First Viceroy: Lord Canning.
  • First woman President of INC: Annie Besant (1917). First Indian woman President of INC: Sarojini Naidu (1925).
  • Napoleon of India: Samudragupta (Gupta dynasty).
  • Grand Old Man of India: Dadabhai Naoroji. Frontier Gandhi: Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan.
  • India's first war of independence: 1857 Revolt — term coined by V D Savarkar.
⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
  • Confusing Governors-General with Viceroys — Lord Canning was both the last GG and first Viceroy after 1857. This is a classic trap question.
  • Mixing up battles — First Battle of Panipat (1526, Babur vs Lodi), Second (1556, Akbar vs Hemu), Third (1761, Marathas vs Afghans). Year and opponent both get tested.
  • Thinking Quit India was 1940 — it was August 8, 1942. Non-Cooperation was 1920. Civil Disobedience was 1930. The decade pattern 1920-1930-1942 helps.
  • Confusing Annie Besant and Sarojini Naidu — Annie was first woman President of INC but she was British. Sarojini was first Indian woman President.
  • Assuming Dandi March was about independence — it was specifically about breaking the Salt Law (salt tax protest), not a general independence declaration.
🧠 Memory aids
  • Delhi Sultanate order: Silly Kings Tackle Small Lions = Slave, Khilji, Tughlaq, Sayyid, Lodi.
  • Three big Gandhi movements by decade: 20-30-42 rule — Non-Cooperation 1920, Civil Disobedience 1930, Quit India 1942.
  • Panipat battles and winners: BAH — Babur, Akbar, Ahmad Shah Abdali won the 1st, 2nd, 3rd battles respectively.
  • Jallianwala Bagh date trick: 13 April 1919 = Baisakhi day. General Dyer ordered firing. Easy to remember as a festival turned tragedy.
🎯 SSC CHSL exam tips
  • Medieval India (Mughals and Sultanate) gives the most questions in CHSL — aim to nail all six Mughal emperors BABH-AJSA (Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Aurangzeb) with one key fact each.
  • Modern History questions are often about Acts and their years — make a small timeline of 1857, 1861, 1905, 1909, 1919, 1935, 1942, 1947 and what happened each year.
  • Epithet questions (who is called what) are free marks — spend 5 minutes memorising the Father of list and the nickname list before exam day.
  • Questions in CHSL are rarely tricky or conceptual for History — they test straight recall. Speed matters. If you know the fact, mark and move in under 20 seconds.
  • Previous year CHSL papers show repeated questions on Dandi March details, 1857 revolt leaders (Rani Lakshmibai at Jhansi, Mangal Pandey at Meerut), and Akbar's administration. Prioritise these over obscure ancient dynasties.
