Odd One Out is one of the most frequently asked topics in SSC CHSL Reasoning. Expect 3-5 questions per paper. The question gives four options and asks you to find the one that does not belong to the group. It tests your ability to spot a common pattern among three items and identify the exception. Questions come in letter-based, number-based, and word-based (semantic) formats. Getting these right quickly can save crucial time.
Word-Based Odd One Out (Semantic)
Four words are given and three share a common category or property. Your job is to find the word that breaks the pattern. The trick is that the grouping can happen at multiple levels, so always ask: what is the most specific common link among three of them? For example, if options are Rose, Lotus, Sunflower, Cobra — the first three are flowers. Cobra is the odd one out. SSC CHSL loves using near-related words to confuse, so stay alert to the exact category.
- Look for category membership: animals, planets, metals, sports, body parts, etc.
- Check sub-categories too: mammals vs reptiles, odd one might be in a different sub-group.
- Common themes used in CHSL: capitals vs countries, fruits vs vegetables, classical dances, rivers, currencies.
- If three items share a property (all are national symbols, all are in southern India) the fourth is odd.
- Watch out for distractors: one word may sound related but belong to a different category.
Number-Based Odd One Out
Four numbers are given. Three follow the same rule and one does not. The rule can be about perfect squares, perfect cubes, prime numbers, even/odd, sum of digits, number of factors, or a specific arithmetic pattern. Always check the most obvious property first (prime? square? cube?) before going into complex patterns. SSC CHSL mostly keeps this straightforward — no need for complex algebraic thinking.
- Check first: is each number prime, composite, perfect square, or perfect cube?
- Check sum of digits: if three have digit-sum divisible by 3 and one does not, that one is odd.
- Check number of factors: prime numbers have exactly 2 factors.
- Even vs odd: if three are odd and one is even, the even one is the odd one out.
- Consecutive or patterned series: check if three follow a gap pattern (like multiples of 7) and one breaks it.

Q: Which is the odd one out? 16, 25, 36, 50. Answer: 50. Because 16=4x4, 25=5x5, 36=6x6 are perfect squares. 50 is not a perfect square.
Q: Which is the odd one out? 17, 23, 29, 33. Answer: 33. Because 17, 23, 29 are prime numbers. 33 = 3x11, so it is composite.
Letter or Alphabet-Based Odd One Out
A group of letter-clusters or letter-pairs is given. Three follow the same alphabetical pattern and one does not. The pattern is usually about the positional gap between letters, whether letters skip alternately, or whether letters are in reverse or forward order. Always convert letters to their position numbers (A=1, B=2 ... Z=26) to spot the pattern quickly.
- Convert each letter to its A=1, Z=26 position number immediately — do not rely on memory.
- Check gap between letters in a cluster: e.g., BD (gap=2), FH (gap=2), PR (gap=2).
- Check if cluster is in alphabetical order or reverse order.
- Vowel vs consonant patterns: if three clusters have only consonants and one has a vowel, that is a clue.
- Common pattern: skip-one (AC, EG, IK — every alternate letter). If one cluster breaks this skip, it is the odd one.

Analogy-Based or Pair Odd One Out
Sometimes the question gives four pairs and asks which pair is the odd one out. Three pairs share the same relationship (like capital-country, player-sport, tool-job) and one pair has a different relationship. Treat it like an analogy question. Identify the relationship in each pair and find the one where the relationship is different.
- State the relationship in words: X is the capital of Y, X is used to measure Y, X is a synonym of Y.
- Three pairs will share the same type of relationship; one will be different.
- Watch for pairs where the order is reversed (Country:Capital instead of Capital:Country) — SSC uses this as a trap.
- Common pair themes in CHSL: instrument-unit, disease-organ, author-book, state-dance form.
⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
- Stopping at the first pattern you see without checking all four options — SSC often designs options where two patterns seem to fit, and the real one is more specific.
- In number questions, confusing perfect squares with perfect cubes (64 = 8x8 AND 4x4x4, so it fits both — do not mark it odd unless you confirm all others are purely squares).
- In letter questions, forgetting to count letter positions and guessing by sight — always write down A=1 values to avoid errors.
- In word questions, picking the odd one by surface similarity (e.g., all are long words) instead of actual category logic.
- Spending more than 40-45 seconds on one Odd One Out question — if stuck, eliminate the most obvious wrong option and guess. Do not over-invest time here.

- For letters, chant A=1, M=13, Z=26 as your anchor points. From M, count forward or backward to reach any letter fast.
- Word questions: Think in Indian exam favourites — classical dances (Kathak, Odissi, Bharatnatyam are Indian; Waltz is not), rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari are Indian; Nile is not). These repeating themes from PYQs are worth memorising.
🎯 SSC CHSL exam tips
- SSC CHSL typically asks 3 to 5 Odd One Out questions in the Reasoning section. They are usually of easy to moderate difficulty — do not skip them.
- Word-based questions often use GK hooks (states, capitals, dances, scientists, sports). Brush up on basic GK categories as they directly help here.
- Number-based questions in recent CHSL papers (2022-2024) have favoured perfect squares, primes, and digit-sum patterns over complex formulas. Keep it simple.
- Letter-based questions appeared more frequently in CHSL Tier-1 than in other SSC exams. Practice converting letters to numbers until it becomes automatic — 5 seconds per cluster is the target.
- Time target: spend no more than 30-40 seconds per question. Odd One Out should be a scoring question, not a time-consuming one. If you cannot find the pattern in 30 seconds, move on and return later.
