Question Types in SSC GD

SSC GD spelling questions appear in two main formats. Understanding the format helps you answer faster and avoid traps. Type 1 is most common — you spot the misspelled word. Type 2 asks you to identify the correctly spelled word from a list.

• Type 1 (Spot the error): Four words given, one is misspelled. You must identify which one. Example: (A) accommodate (B) separate (C) recieve (D) necessary — Answer: C (should be receive)
• Type 2 (Choose correct spelling): Four options, only one is spelled correctly. You pick the right one. Example: (A) occured (B) occurred (C) occurrd (D) occuured — Answer: B
• Type 3 (Sentence-based): A sentence contains a misspelled word. You spot it. Example: 'The maintainance of the building is important.' — Error: maintainance should be maintenance
• Trick: Sometimes all four options look similar — focus on the exact spelling, not pronunciation

Quick Memorization Technique

Don't try to memorize spelling rules in isolation. Link each word to a memory hook — a phrase, image, or sound that reminds you of the correct spelling. This works better than rote repetition for spelling.

• Accommodate: 'A room can accommodate two more people' — emphasizes 2 c's and 2 m's
• Necessary: 'One collar, two sleeves' — 1 n, 2 c, 2 s
• Separate: 'There is a rat in separate' — sep-a-rat-e (a for apart)
• Receive: 'Receive has a c, deceive has a c, both use ei' — rhyme trick
• Rhythm: 'Rhythm helps your two hips move' — r-h-y-t-h-m
• Privilege: 'I have a privilege' — priv-i-lege (i in middle)

• Confusing ie and ei: Candidates often reverse these. Remember: receive, deceive, ceiling use ei (after c). Believe, achieve, relief use ie (not after c).
• Doubling consonants incorrectly: Spelling 'occured' instead of 'occurred' or 'begining' instead of 'beginning'. Apply the doubling rule: consonant-vowel-consonant words double the final consonant before adding a vowel suffix.
• Changing vowels in the middle: Writing 'seperate' instead of 'separate' or 'definately' instead of 'definitely'. These are vowel-confusion errors — memorize the exact vowel sequence.
