Why this topic matters · 7 min read
Vakya Sudhar is one of the most scoring sections in SSC GD Hindi language paper. Every year 3 to 5 questions come directly from this topic. You are given a grammatically incorrect Hindi sentence and asked to identify the correct version from four options. The errors are mostly in gender (ling), number (vachan), tense (kaal), case markers (karak), verb agreement, and word order. Knowing common rules saves you 3-4 marks easily.
Ling Dosha (Gender Errors)
In Hindi, every noun is either masculine (pulling) or feminine (stree ling). The verb and adjective attached to the noun must match its gender. This is the most common error tested in SSC GD. For example, using a masculine verb with a feminine subject is a classic trap.
- Nouns ending in aa sound (like ladka, ghoda) are usually masculine
- Nouns ending in i or ee sound (like ladki, nadi) are usually feminine
- Some nouns break the rule: paani, dahi, moti are masculine despite ending differently
- Verbs must agree with subject gender: ladka gaya (correct) vs ladka gayi (wrong)
- Adjectives also change form: sundar ladka vs sundar ladki
Vachan Dosha (Number Errors)
Vachan means singular or plural. A very common SSC GD trap is mixing singular subject with plural verb or vice versa. The verb form changes based on number. Also, when a plural subject is used, the adjective and verb both must become plural.
- Singular: ladka khata hai — Plural: ladke khate hain
- Feminine singular: ladki khati hai — Feminine plural: ladkiyan khati hain
- Do not use hai with plural subjects — always use hain
- Watch out: Aap is always used with hain even for one person (respect form)
- Mai aur woh jate hain — not jata hain, because compound subject is treated plural
Kaal Dosha (Tense Errors)
Hindi has three main tenses: bhoot kaal (past), vartamaan kaal (present), and bhavishy kaal (future). SSC GD questions often mix tense within a sentence — like using a past verb when the sentence context is clearly present or future. The tense must remain consistent throughout the sentence.
- Present: woh khata hai / woh khati hai
- Past: woh khaya / woh khayi
- Future: woh khayega / woh khayegi
- If sentence starts in past tense, all verbs should remain in past
- Common trap: Ram ne khana khaya aur bahar jaata hai — mixed tense, wrong
Karak Dosha (Case Marker Errors)
Karak means the relationship between a noun and the verb in a sentence. Hindi uses post-positions like ne, ko, se, mein, par, ke liye. Using the wrong karak is a very common error. The rule for ne is most tested: ne is used with subject only in past transitive sentences.
- Ne rule: transitive verb in past tense needs ne after subject — Ram ne khaana khaya
- Ne is NOT used with intransitive verbs: Ram gaya (not Ram ne gaya) — this is a top trap
- Ko is used for indirect object or destination: usne mujhe dekha
- Se means by or from: usne churi se kaata
- Mein vs par: sheher mein rehta hoon (inside), chhat par baitha hoon (surface)
Shabd Kram Dosha (Word Order Errors)
Hindi follows Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) order, unlike English which is SVO. A common SSC GD question gives a jumbled sentence where the verb is not at the end or the object is placed wrongly. Always check that the main verb comes at the end.
- Correct order: Subject + Object + Verb — Ram ne seb khaya
- Adjective always comes before the noun it describes — sundar phool, not phool sundar
- Question words like kya, kab, kahan come before the verb
- Ne, ko, se always immediately follow the noun they relate to
- Adverbs of time usually come at the start: Kal woh aaya
Kriya Visheshan and Visheshan Dosha (Adverb and Adjective Errors)
Adjectives (visheshan) describe nouns and must match in gender and number. Adverbs (kriya visheshan) describe verbs and do not change form. SSC GD sometimes uses wrong adjective forms as error, especially when the noun changes from singular to plural.
- Accha ladka but acchi ladki — adjective changes with gender
- Acche ladke (plural masculine), acchi ladkiyan (plural feminine)
- Adverbs like dhire, jaldi, abhi do not change form ever
- Do not apply gender rules to adverbs — dhire dhire chalti hai is correct, not dhiri
- Watch for: woh bahut thaka hua aadmi hai — thaka hua must match aadmi gender
⚠ Common mistakes to avoid
- Using ne with intransitive verbs in past tense — Ram ne gaya is WRONG, Ram gaya is correct. This appears almost every year.
- Writing hai instead of hain with Aap — Aap kya karte hai is wrong, Aap kya karte hain is correct.
- Mixing tenses in same sentence — starting with past tense and switching to present mid-sentence.
- Not changing adjective form with gender — saying accha ladki instead of acchi ladki.
- Using mein and par interchangeably — mein is for inside (ghar mein), par is for surface (mez par).
🧠 Memory aids
- NE = Need Transitive Past — Ne is needed only when verb is transitive and tense is past. Remember: NTP.
- SOV Hindi, SVO English — think of Hindi as the reverse of English for word order.
- Gender test trick: if you can say woh (feminine) before the noun naturally in context, use stree ling verb. Try woh raat — raat is feminine, so raat aayi (not aaya).
- AAP = Always Always Plural — Aap always takes hain and plural verb form, never hai.
🎯 SSC GD exam tips
- SSC GD Hindi paper has 25 questions total. Vakya Sudhar usually has 3 to 5 questions. All are direct — no tricks in options if you know the rules.
- Most questions target Ne dosha and Ling dosha together. Practice spotting these two first before scanning other errors.
- The correct option in SSC GD Vakya Sudhar is usually the one that fixes only one error — do not look for options that change the whole meaning.
- Time tip: Each Vakya Sudhar question should take under 30 seconds. Read subject first, check verb agreement, then check karak. Three-step check is enough.
- Recent papers (2021-2023) have repeated ne dosha questions heavily. Also kaal mismatch in compound sentences is trending upward. Focus 60 percent of your prep on these two.
