If producers have 10,000 kcal, herbivores get 1,000 kcal, carnivores get 100 kcal, and top carnivores get only 10 kcal. This explains why fewer large predators exist in any ecosystem.

Ecological pyramids graphically represent the relationship between trophic levels in terms of number, biomass, or energy. Always remember: the pyramid of energy is ALWAYS upright — no exception.
