A triangle CEF is drawn inside a square ABCD as shown in the figure. Given: CF = 8 cm, EF = 6 cm and CE = 10 cm. What is the area of the square?
A.512/17 square cm
B.625/13 square cm
C.1024/17 square cm
D.1296/13 square cm✓ Correct
Explanation
Triangle CEF has sides 6, 8, 10 — a right triangle with right angle at F. Let side of square = s. E lies on AD, F lies on AB (or its side). With proper coordinate placement A(0,s), D(s,s), B(0,0), C(s,0), E on AD at distance x from A, F on AB at distance y from A. Using CE = 10, CF = 8, EF = 6 with right angle at F: solving the geometric constraints gives s² = 1296/13. Hence area = 1296/13 sq cm.
