Cambium is an example of lateral meristem. Lateral meristems are located along the sides of stems and roots and are responsible for secondary growth, which increases the thickness or girth of the plant. The vascular cambium produces secondary xylem and secondary phloem, while the cork cambium produces the bark. Apical meristems are located at the tips of roots and shoots and are responsible for primary growth (increase in length). Intercalary meristems are located between mature tissues, typically at the bases of internodes in grasses. Permanent tissues are differentiated tissues that have lost the ability to divide.
