Extensive pit-dwellings have been identified at the two Neolithic sites of :

Burzahom and Gufkral, both located in the Kashmir valley, are the two Neolithic sites famous for extensive pit-dwellings. Burzahom (meaning 'place of birch' in Kashmiri) was excavated and revealed circular and oval pit-houses dug into the loess soil, with steps leading down into them. Gufkral ('cave of the potter') also revealed similar pit-dwellings, along with evidence of agriculture and domestication of animals. The other sites listed are South Indian Neolithic sites that do not feature pit-dwellings as a distinctive characteristic.
