The earliest coins in India, such as the punch-marked silver coins of the Mahajanapadas and Mauryas, bore only symbols and not the names or portraits of rulers. It was the Indo-Greek rulers (such as Demetrius, Menander, etc.) in the second century BCE who first issued coins in India that depicted the portrait of the king on the obverse along with his name and titles in Greek (and Kharoshthi/Brahmi on the reverse). This Hellenistic practice was later adopted by the Sakas, Kushanas and Guptas. Hence the Indo-Greeks were the first to issue coins bearing rulers' names and images.
