In February 2024, the Government of India decided to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) between India and Myanmar. The FMR allowed tribes living along the India-Myanmar border to travel up to 16 km inside the other country without a visa. The decision was taken to ensure internal security and demographic stability in the northeastern states, particularly in light of the situation in Manipur. The Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the entire 1,643 km India-Myanmar border would be fenced.
