In which cell does the first meiotic cell division take place during the process of spermatogenesis?

During spermatogenesis, diploid spermatogonia first multiply by mitosis. Some of these enlarge to form primary spermatocytes (still diploid, 2n). The primary spermatocyte then undergoes the FIRST meiotic division (meiosis I, reductional division) to give two haploid secondary spermatocytes. The secondary spermatocytes undergo the second meiotic division to give spermatids. Sertoli cells are nurse cells, not part of the germ-cell lineage. Hence the first meiotic division occurs in the primary spermatocyte.
